“I care, Mark.” He ran his fingers over the curve of my ear. “Your birthday is in February. Would it be too presumptuous to ask you to wait until then?”

  “That’s two months, Quinn.”

  “Yes.”

“Okay. I’ll give you two months.”

  “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. Come February 25, if things aren’t better, then I’m out of there.”

“Fair enough. This is a splendid Christmas present.” He yawned. “Sorry. By the way, Merry Christmas. I’m sorry I don’t have a present for you.”

“You did. You gave me what I’d been hoping for.”

“I did?” His eyelids were drooping, and I could see he was going to fall asleep any minute.

“This.” I tightened my arms around him.

“Oh. Well, I enjoyed it myself.” He yawned again.

“If you fall asleep now, we’re going to wake up all sticky.”

  “I don’t mind.”

“Okay. We can shower later. That’s another place I’ve wanted to make love with you.”

“I’ll look forward to it. Do you have plans for tomorrow, Mark? I’d like you to spend the day with me.”

“You’re going to have dinner with your mother.”

  “Yes. Come with me.”

  “What’s she gonna think?”

“That I’m with a man? It shouldn’t bother her. Her middle brother’s been in a relationship with another man for over twenty years.”

“Okay. But what’s she gonna think that I’m the man you’re with?”

“As long as I’m happy, she’ll be happy.” His voice became indistinct as sleep started to claim him. “Go to sleep, Mark.” He tucked his head under my chin.

“Your ass is gonna freeze.” But he was asleep and didn’t hear me. I’d wake him up in a couple of hours, and we’d shower then. Or we could make love again. There were more condoms on the tray.

I caught the end of the rug and pulled it over us.

  “Merry Christmas, Quinn.”

  About the Author

TINNEAN has been writing since the third grade, where she was inspired to try her hand at epic poetry. Fortunately, that epic poem didn’t survive the passage of time; however, her love of writing not only survived but thrived, and in high school she became a member of the magazine staff, where she contributed a number of stories.

It was with the advent of the family’s second computer—the first intimidated everyone—that her writing took off, enhanced in part by fan fiction, but mostly by the wonder that is copy and paste. While involved in fandom, she was nominated for both Rerun and Light My Fire Awards. Now she concentrates on her original characters.

A New Yorker at heart, she resides in southwest Florida with her husband and two computers.

Ernest Hemingway’s words reflect Tinnean’s devotion to her craft: “Once writing has become your major vice and greatest pleasure, only death can stop it.”
