“Josh,” she said, “you have to stop blaming yourself. You couldn’t have known. Plus, think of how many people you saved tonight by getting Carly out of that bathroom. And all those people would have gone on to infect other people, and so on. You’re a hero Josh.”

  “I don’t feel like a hero.”

  “You’re my hero.”

He gave her a weak smile.

They heard footsteps coming up the stairs and turned to see Amber’s mother enter the room.

“Hello Mrs. Landon,” Josh and Billy said together.

“Hello Josh. Hello Billy. Are you all in for the night?”

“I think so,” replied Amber. They all waited to see if she was going to tell her mom what was going on, but she didn’t.

“Good,” her mom said, “And I don’t have to remind you boys to be gentlemen, do I?” Her eyes went back and forth between Billy and Josh.

“No ma’am,” they said in unison.

“Emma, how are you enjoying your visit?”

Emma nodded her head. “It’s nice. We ran into a few weird people, but other than that, it’s been fun.”

“Very good. Remember there’s food and drinks in the fridge, and I’ll be stopping by to check on you.”

  “Mom,” Amber whined.

Mrs. Landon ignored her and turned towards the stairs. “Have fun,” she called back, “but not too much fun if you know what I mean.”

Josh watched her start down the stairs, and then turned to Billy, who was watching her go also.

“Twenty years,” Josh said to his friend, who responded with a grin.

Amber looked between them. “What does that mean?”

  “Nothing,” Billy replied.

  “Tell me.”

  “Just guy stuff.”

“It has to do with sex, right?”

Billy grinned. “Josh will tell you.”

  She turned to Josh. “Well?”

“It’s just a saying that guys have.”

  “And?”

“Supposedly, if you want to know what you’re going to be having sex with in twenty years, look at your girlfriend’s mother.”

Amber looked appalled. “You guys are pigs.”

“What?” Billy asked with a laugh.

“You shouldn’t be looking at my mom that way.”

  “It’s what we guys do.”

  “Checking out mothers?”

  “Checking out women.”

“If my grandmother was here, would you be checking her out?”

Billy gave her a disgusted look. “Don’t even joke about something like that.”

  “Grandma’s a woman.”

Billy dropped the bat and put his fingers in his ears. “I’m not listening.”

“And I hear she’s wild in the sack,” Amber added, “Does that turn you on? Are you imagining me being like that when I’m seventy?”

“La la la la la,” Billy said, keeping his fingers tight.

Amber pulled her lips back over her teeth, making herself appear toothless. “Come on baby, let me give you a gum job.”

He laughed and sat, pulling her onto his lap. Speaking in a fake old-man voice, he said, “I wish I could Honey, but I haven’t been able to get it up in five years.”

Amber grinned up at him as Emma and Josh cracked up on the couch.

Josh’s cell phone went off. Pulling it out, he saw it was his mom calling.

  “Hello?”

  “Josh, where are you?”

  “I’m over at Amber’s. What’s up?”

“I got a call from Mrs. Petrick. She told me her son saw you at the drive-in talking to the police. Are you in some kind of trouble?”

“No Mom. Some girl was having some kind of drug overdose or something, and I called the police. That’s why I was talking to them.”

  “Oh dear. What girl?”

  “Carly Zanderson.”

“Oh my. She used to be such a sweet thing.”

  “Yeah.” Not anymore, he thought.

“Josh, I want you to come home.”

“Why? I thought you said I could stay over.”

“There’s strange things going on around town, and I’d feel better if you were here.”

  “What kind of strange things?”

“I was at the grocery store, waiting in the checkout line, and Martha Rionda was telling me some man was having sex with the Waller’s cows.”

  Josh remained silent.

And then, as we stood there, Sister Margaret from St. Agatha’s came in.”

  “What’s so weird about that?”

“She was completely naked. Then she tried to have sex with the bag boy. You know little Brandon Mickus?”

“Damn!” His friends gave him inquisitive looks.

  “Josh, watch your language.”

“Sorry. What happened to Sister Margaret?”

“The store manager called the police, but she left before they got there. I guess she’s still wandering around.”

“Um, did Sister Margaret touch you or anyone else while she was there?”

“Me? No. She may have touched Brandon, and the two guys who pulled her off the boy. Why do you ask?”

“I’m worried she might be sick and whatever she has is contagious.”

“Oh dear, I never considered that. That would certainly explain why she acted that way. She’s the last one I would expect to be flashing her peaches around.”

He gritted his teeth. She used that word all the time for nude women, and he wasn’t sure exactly what she was referring to, and he never considered asking.

“So Mom, we’re all safe over here and we’re in for the night. Can’t I stay?”

“No Josh. I won’t be able to sleep a wink if you’re not home and all these weirdoes are running around. I’ll be worried sick.”

He sighed. “Ok, I’ll be home in about a half hour.” Emma frowned.

“Thank you. I’ll see you then.”

“Bye Mom.” He flipped the phone closed and shoved it into his pocket.

“Sorry guys, but Mom wants me to come home.”

“Sorry to hear that dude,” Billy replied.

“What was that about Sister Margaret?” Amber asked.

He related the story his mother had told him.

“Shit!” Amber exclaimed, “Sister Margaret is a sex zombie?”

“Seems like it. I’m just glad I wasn’t there to see it.”

“You and me both,” Billy said with a shudder.

Josh turned to Emma. “Walk me to my car?”

She smiled and took his hand. “Love to.”

They walked out into the cool night with her hand in his and their fingers intertwined.

“Except for the sex-crazed zombie women,” he said, “I had fun tonight.”

“Sorry about that,” she replied, “I’ll try to control myself next time.”

He laughed and leaned his back against his car. “I like you out of control. You’re very sexy.”

“Oh really,” she said, and stepped close to him, her hands sliding up his chest to his shoulders.

“Really,” he replied, placing his hands on her hips. “But you’re more than that.”

  She smiled. “Go on.”

“I feel a connection between us. It was there when we first met in the restaurant.” He paused and said, “I hope I’m not imagining things.”

“No, you’re not. I felt it too. I’ve never felt that with anyone before.”

  “Same with me.”

A police siren wailed in the distance.

He cocked his head and listened. “I think they’re going to be busy tonight.”

“Probably. And I’m going to have nightmares. I was looking forward to…” Her voice trailed off.

  “What?”

She smiled. “I probably shouldn’t say. It’s silly.”

  “Tell me.”

“I was looking forward to sleeping next to you. So if I did have a nightmare, you could hold me.”

“How about if I hold y
ou now, and you can save it for later?”

“Not quite the same, but I accept.”

He pulled her to him, their bodies pressing together as his hands slid around her back, squeezing her gently. Her hands met around his neck and she pressed the side of her face against his chest. They held each other for several minutes, and he combed his fingers through her hair.

“I want to see you again tomorrow,” he said, “How long are you staying?”

“Aunt Jen is supposed to drive me home tomorrow evening. But I would love to spend the day with you tomorrow.”

He pulled away and looked at her. “After tomorrow, would you like to go out sometime?”

“Of course. If you don’t mind driving over to Dawson to pick me up.”

“I would drive a lot farther than fifteen miles to do that.”

  She grinned. “It’s a date.”

“I guess I better go. I’ll call tomorrow morning and we’ll make plans for the day.”

She squeezed him tighter and put her head back on his chest. “Please stay.”

“You don’t know how much I wish I could.”

She looked up and pressed her hips against his, feeling his hardness there. “Oh, I have a pretty good idea,” she said with a mischievous grin.

He laughed again, and said, “Just so you know, it’s not just that.”

  “I know.”

He leaned down and she turned her face up to him, and they kissed softly, drawing it out because they knew it would be the last of the night.

When they separated, he said, “I’m missing you already.”

“You promise to dream about me?”

He crossed his heart with his finger. “I promise.”

“Good,” she said, and moved off him. “See you tomorrow.”

  “Bye.”

She turned and walked towards the garage, and he watched her go. At the door she turned around and waved before disappearing inside. He got in his car and started for home. When he reached Harlan Street – the main street through town – he had his right blinker on, which was the way towards home. But as he stared at the red light, an idea came to his mind he couldn’t shake, and flipped the turn signal over to the left.

  Chapter 20

When Josh pulled up in front of Haley’s still dark house, there was no sign of her. Taking the bag holding the items he had bought at a convenience store on the way over, he popped the trunk and got out. In the trunk, he searched through his gym bag, and found the item he was looking for.

His mom hadn’t been happy when he called her and said he would he late. But when he mentioned that Haley was in trouble, she became concerned. She always had a fond spot for the girl. He did too, and even though she pissed him off, he couldn’t leave her running around like this.

His heart raced as he walked to the Ander’s back yard, keeping an eye out for Haley. He went straight to the small shed, opened the unlocked latch, pulled open the double doors, and went inside. Using the small flashlight on his keychain, he searched for anything that could be dangerous.

First, he pulled the lawnmower out onto the grass. Taking a pair of hedge trimmers from their hook on the wall, he tossed them out too. Next went a hand scythe, followed by a shelf full of gardening implements. Shovels, a rake and a hoe, and then the chemicals – weed killers and fertilizers, all out on the lawn.

He found a pair of gardening gloves on a shelf and put them on.

Taking one last look to make sure, he put the bag on the shelf. Inside were several snack cakes and a couple bottles of soda. He was ready.

“Haley!” he called, his voice sounding loud in the quiet of the night.

He realized he wasn’t even sure she was in there. For all he knew, she could be walking the neighborhood fucking stray dogs.

“Haley!” he repeated. He worried about waking the neighbors, and waited a few minutes before calling for her again.

He was just about to speak when the back door opened. Haley appeared on the porch and looked at him.

“Haley,” he said, “come on down. I want to see you.”

She smiled and started down the porch stairs. Seeing her naked brought back memories, including the night they had lost their virginity to each other last summer on a blanket out at Stanton Lake Park. Right now, looking at her like this and trying to keep from thinking about what she had probably been doing in the house, that day seemed so long ago.

When she got close, he spoke.

“Do you want to fuck?” he said.

Her grin widened. “Yes.” She drew out the ‘s’ like a snake hissing.

“Inside,” he said, indicating the shed with a nod of his head.

She ignored him and came right for him.

“Inside!” he commanded, and put his gloved hand out against her chest.

  “Fuck me,” she said.

“I will,” he replied. “Get inside and bend over, because I want to put my cock in you.”

  “I got an itch.”

“And I’m going to scratch it. Get inside and get ready to get fucked.”

She ran her finger down the front of his shirt, and it took all of his willpower not to recoil in disgust. She stepped into the shed.

She stopped and turned just inside the door and said, “Fuck me hard.”

“I’m going to fuck you hard baby. Bend over and show me that pussy.”

She smiled and turned around, leaned over and presented her ass to him. “Fill my cunt.”

One of her hands reached back and spread her labia to his gaze. He was thankful the dim light prevented him from seeing much detail.

He stepped forward and lifted one foot, placing it square on the right cheek of her ass and pushed hard. She went sprawling onto the floor of the shed, and he calmly stepped back and closed the doors. Pulling his combination lock from his pocket, he then slipped it through the latch and clicked it closed.

There was a small gap between the doors, and her fingernails scrabbled at the edges, poking out through it.

“Fuck me,” she said, her voice muffled through the gap.

“I’m sorry Haley, but this is for your own good. I’m not sure if you understand me, but I put something to eat and drink in there. I’ll check back on you tomorrow.”

Carefully removing the gardening gloves and tossing them on the lawn, he turned and walked away. He could hear her banging on the doors and yelling, “Fuck me!” as he turned the corner around her house.

  Chapter 21

Carly Zanderson walked through the woods, feeling the agony of desire permeate her entire body. The pain had gone away when she was with the man in the car and the boys in the bathroom stall, but that had only been temporary. It had come throbbing back, causing every nerve ending in her body to cry out in need, aching for sexual fulfillment.

Her hand rubbed her pussy as she walked, but it wasn’t enough. She needed hard flesh inside of her, filling and stretching.

She broke through the tree line and out into the open field. The harsh glare of overhead lights made her squint, but when her eyes adjusted to the scene in front of her, she grinned wide.

“This party blows,” Jimmy Hoffman said as he leaned his head back to rest on the edge of the whirlpool, the jets of bubbles tickling his skin.

Markus and Ryan glanced at each other and rolled their eyes. What was annoying their prima-donna quarterback now?

“I think it’s cool,” Markus replied, “We got the whole pool to ourselves for the entire night.”

  Ryan nodded his approval.

Jimmy shot them a disdainful look. “That’s because you’re sophomores. When you get older, you’ll appreciate the company of females more.”

“Wasn’t this party your idea?” Ryan asked.

“Yeah, but I never expected the coach to not allow us to bring girls. This sausagefest sucks.”

“You couldn’t change his mind?” Markus asked, “You’re the starting quarterback after all.” He had to hold himself back from laughing, because even though
Jimmy was the starting quarterback, they’d only won two games in the past two seasons. The rumor was that Coach was glad to see him graduate, because the only reason he started him was because Jimmy’s father was president of the school board and Coach was afraid of losing his job. Jimmy’s backup, a junior named Tim Kellerman, had a great arm and deserved to play. The rest of the team was already looking forward to next season.

“I tried,” Jimmy said, “but even though Coach and I are like this,” he held up two crossed fingers, “he wouldn’t go for it.”

Ryan kicked Markus under the water and they both tried to suppress a grin.

“So look at this,” Jimmy continued, waving his hand at the guys in the main pool in front of them, “not a pussy or pair of tits in sight.”

“Yeah, too bad Bubba isn’t here,” Ryan said, “his man boobs would have been the hit of the party.”

Markus laughed at his friend’s joke, but Jimmy gave them a quizzical look.”

“Yeah,” Jimmy said, “I wonder why Bubba didn’t make it?”

“So Jimmy,” Markus said, “I hear you went out with Haley Anders last night.”

“Yeah,” Jimmy said with a grin, “she called me a few days ago and begged me to take her out.”

“Isn’t she Josh Becker’s old girlfriend?” Ryan asked.

Jimmy’s smile disappeared. “So what if she is?”

  “I’m just saying.”

Jimmy bristled. “So you’re saying I’m feeding off of Josh’s leftovers? Is that what you’re saying?”

“It does kinda look that way.”

“You better get your story straight,” Jimmy said, leaning forward for emphasis, “She broke up with him. And now she wants to be with me. That’s not leftovers. That’s called trading up.”

“I never thought of it that way,” Ryan said, feeling the kick from his friend.

“I can’t understand what she saw in that faggot anyway,” Jimmy said, “He’s a fucking baseball player and she’s a cheerleader with the nicest ass I’ve ever seen. Hell, I missed a few open receivers in my career because I was distracted by that work of art bouncing up and down on the sidelines.”

Ryan turned to Markus. “She was at every game, wasn’t she?” His friend grinned.

“Yeah,” Jimmy said, ignoring them, “we went to some chick-flick last night. I can’t remember the name. Some fag was crying over some girl, or some shit like that.”
