Strang looked at his watch. “Thirty seconds. Just enter the fucking code.”

“Ok ok, calm down. 0-7-0-4-7-7, right?”

  “Yes. No! It’s 0-7-0-4-7-0!”

  “0-7-0-4-7-0?”

“Yes! Enter it! We’ve got fifteen seconds!”

“Ok. Zero.” He pushed the zero button, and the display lit up with the number

“Seven.” He pushed the seven button.

  “Hurry the fuck up!”

  “Zero.”

  “Four.”

Josh held up the device and showed him the display of four numbers. “Is this right?”

“Five seconds! Press the fucking buttons now!”

  “I will, I will.”

  “Oh god!”

Strang bent over, crying with his face pressed against the floor, moaning out incoherent sounds.

“Strang? What was the last two numbers again?”

The man was hyperventilating, unable to speak. But after a few seconds his eyes blinked and he looked around, realizing he wasn’t dead. He rose back up to a sitting position, shock on his face.

  “What the hell?”

“I’m just fucking with ya,” Josh said with a grin, “I know what they are.”

  “Seven.” He pushed the seven.

“And zero.” The zero button clicked. The blinking red light went dark before switching over to a steady green.

“Looks like that worked. Thank you Strang. I knew you could do it.” Josh stood up.

  “What? How?”

Josh leaned over and spoke down to him. “Strang, I’ll tell you this now since in a few minutes you’re not going to remember anything that happens. The first chance you get, you may want to reset your watch. I believe it’s running five minutes fast.” He winked.

Strang stared up at him with a stunned look on his face. “You son of a bitch.” He paused and thought. “What do you mean about me not remembering?”

But Josh had already walked away. He went over to the edge of the mass of people and picked out two feet. He grabbed one in each hand and leaned back, pulling hard. The two naked men slid away from the group, disconnecting from slick orifices.

He dragged them across the gym floor, their wet cocks leaving slimy trails on the hardwood.

“Hey, what are you doing?” Strang asked with alarm in his voice.

Josh pulled the men until they laid next to Strang. “I’d like you to meet your new best friends. You may be repulsed at first, but I’m pretty sure you’ll quickly grow to like them.”

The two naked men clutched at Strang, who tried to squirm away. “Get them off of me! Hey, stop it!”

“And remember Strang, there’s no cure.”

“You can’t do this! Please!” Strang’s voice was cut off when one of the men held his head in his hands and leaned in to give him a wet sloppy kiss. Strang responded with a half-scream, half-gag.

“One more thing Strang. I hear the ass fucking goes a lot easier if you just go with it and don’t tighten up.”

With that, he turned and walked away, turning off the gymnasium lights and shutting the door, muting the sound of the man’s screams.

  Chapter 44

Josh walked across the gymnasium parking lot, looking for where his friends might be hiding.

  “Josh!”

He looked in the direction of the voice and saw Emma had popped up from behind the guard rail across the road. He held up the device and waved her out.

She jumped the rail and sprinted to him, her athletic grace on full display. He made a mental note to be sure to make it to her track meets. Amber and Billy ran too, but not at her speed.

When she got close, she leapt into his arms, and he caught and held her tightly, his lips finding hers and they kissed. When they separated he saw she was crying again.

“It’s ok baby,” he said, squeezing her.

  “I was so scared.”

“To tell you the truth, I was too.”

Amber and Billy arrived. “Dude,” Billy said, “you set his watch ahead, didn’t you?”

  Josh grinned.

“I knew it! You mentioned Coach Gaylord and I knew it. I told them how you used to set his watch ahead when we wanted to get out of practice early.”

“I was hoping you’d get that.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Emma asked, her arms still around him.

“I needed Strang to believe I was willing to die. I was counting on your reaction to convince him. Sorry about that.”

“You’re forgiven,” she said, and laid her head against his chest.

“Speaking of Strang,” Amber said, “did you do anything to him? Please tell me you did.”

Josh grinned again. “I never laid a hand on him.”

  Amber looked disappointed.

“However,” Josh continued, “I did introduce him to a few new boyfriends in there.” He pulled his own watch from his pocket and glanced at it. “I’d say they’re probably very close by now.”

  Amber laughed.

  “You da man!” Billy said.

Josh took a slight bow. “I try.”

Emma and Josh walked up the steps to his front porch hand in hand. They had just come from the police station to make sure Chief Moore was ok, and to bring him up to date with the events at the gym.

Moore told them they were all heroes, and thanked them profusely. He filled them in about his run-in with Trax.

“You mean he’s dead right down that hallway?” Billy asked, “With a naked woman in the jail?”

  Moore nodded.

“Can I go look?” Billy asked, and Amber elbowed him in the ribs.

“If you want me to kick your ass,” Moore replied gruffly.

“What happens now Chief?” Josh asked.

“I’ve contacted the Governor, and he’s sending in an entire unit of the State Police. He wasn’t too happy about what the Army had been up to in his state, and guaranteed heads would roll over this. I’m not sure I believe he didn’t know, but he’s doing the right thing now.”

“What about the people in the gym?” Josh asked.

“The Center for Disease Control is on their way too. They’ll have the means to help them, thanks to all of you. I’m sure they’ll want to hold them awhile for observation, but you’ll have your mom back soon Josh, I promise.”

  “Thank you.”

Moore clamped a hand on his shoulder, winced, and said, “I’m proud of you Josh. And I know your dad would be proud of you too. A lot of people owe you their lives tonight. They owe all four of you.”

“Thanks Chief. That means a lot to me. I was wondering if you could do me a favor?”

  “Sure.”

“Could you send someone out to the hospital to check on a girl out there?” He explained where Amber was.

“No problem. I’ll have someone out there right away.”

  “Thanks.”

They left the police station and started the walk home.

“You coming back to my place Josh?” Amber asked.

“No, I think I’m going to go home and wait for news about my mom.”

“Are you sure?” Emma said, “I don’t feel like saying goodbye to you again.”

“Um,” Josh began, a blush rising in his cheeks.

  “What?” Emma asked.

“I was wondering if you wanted to come with me.”

Emma smiled. “I would love that.” She turned to Amber. “Do you think Aunt Jen will be real upset?”

Amber waived her hand. “Don’t worry, I’ll cover for you. I’ll tell her about Josh’s heroics and that he was so traumatized he couldn’t be alone.”

  “Thanks.” Emma was smiling wide.

They said their goodbyes and headed their separate ways, with Emma and Josh walking hand in hand. They walked silently for a while before Josh spoke.

“Emma, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you.”

  “What’s that?”

“You said you and you ex-boyfriend brok
e up because he wanted to do more than you were ready for.”

“Yeah, that’s basically the gist of it.”

Josh paused to find the right words. “Are you saying he wasn’t happy with the things you did with me?”

  “Um…” she began.

“I’m just saying,” Josh said, “he would have to be crazy not to have enjoyed that.”

Emma smiled, and a blush rose in her cheeks.

“Josh,” she replied, and now she was the one groping for words.

  “What?”

“I didn’t do those things with him. I’ve never done those things with anyone.”

He stared at her with a stunned expression. “What do you mean?”

“The furthest I let him go – I let anyone go – was kissing.”

  “Seriously?”

  “Seriously.”

“You mean earlier tonight, in the observation room? That was the first time you did that?”

“Yeah. I hope my inexperience didn’t show.”

“Are you kidding me? You were incredible.”

  She smiled.

“And in the closet?” he asked, “That was a first too?”

She nodded. “The first time someone touched me that way.”

Josh thought about her answer. “Why?”

  “Why?” she repeated.

“I mean, why’d you decide to do that with me?”

She considered her answer before responding. “Because as much as it seemed wrong to do that with Brad, it felt right to do it with you.”

They arrived at Josh’s house and he led her up onto the porch. He took her in his arms and held her without speaking.

After a minute, he said, “As for our next step, maybe we’re moving too fast. Maybe we should–”

She put her finger to his lips and stopped him. “Josh?”

  “Yes?”

  “Are you my guy?”

  He smiled softly. “Of course.”

  “Am I your girl?”

  “You’re my girl.”

“Good. Your girl just wants to be with you. Not in a back seat, or in a closet, or in chairs, but lying beside you in a bed, being held in your arms. Whatever we want to happen after that will happen, but I want to fall asleep with you, and wake up next to you. After all we’ve been through, I need that.”

He smiled and leaned down to kiss her. When the kiss ended, he said, “Let’s go inside.”

  Chapter 45

He took her hand and opened the door, allowing her to enter first before closing the door behind them. They stood in the darkness at the bottom of the stairs and kissed again, their bodies pressing together. He could feel his desire for her rising within him. Her lips were soft against his, and he felt the urgency in her breath.

  “Josh? Is that you?”

They pulled apart and Josh’s head snapped up, peering into the darkness.

“Mom?” His heartbeat thudded in his chest.

The lamp beside the couch came on, and it was her, sitting there in pajamas with a blanket covering her lap. Josh gaped in surprise.

“Josh!” she said, and got up off the couch to run to him. He turned from Emma and his mother hugged him tightly.

“Where have you been?” she said, “I’ve been worried sick about you.”

  “You’ve been worried about me?”

“Of course. I thought you had turned into one of those things. I was crying all afternoon.”

“I thought you had too.” he said, “When I talked to Mr. Crawford, he said everyone in the church had gotten sick.”

“They did. I was there. It was horrible.”

“Why didn’t you get sick too?”

“Well, you know, about a year ago I saw a special on TV about germs, and it bothered me quite a bit. And I decided at the time to start taking communion by hand, instead of from the priest, who is sticking his fingers in everyone’s mouth.”

“So this morning, I get my communion biscuit, and I’m about to pop it into my mouth, and I see some dirt on it. Now I’m a good Christian woman, but the Bible doesn’t say anything about having to eat dirt. So I pretended to eat it and dropped it in my purse.”

Josh grinned. “That sounds like you.”

Then everyone started getting weird. Oh the things that were happening. I just can’t repeat them. You understand.”

“Completely Mom. How’d you get out?”

“Well, I was sitting near the front, and some other woman tried to get out through the rear doors, and a few men went after her and pulled her back in. During that, I noticed the altar boy –Mark is his name – was sneaking out the door on the side of the altar. So I snuck back with him. He was scared at first, thinking I was one of them, but when he realized I wasn’t he took me down to the basement and we hid in an office until later in the afternoon.”

“Then I walked home, trying to find you. When you weren’t here I imagined the worst.” Tears started to come to her eyes.

Josh hugged her again. “That’s amazing Mom. I was worried about you too. I’m glad you’re alright.”

They hugged for another minute, and then his mother said, “Josh, you’re being rude to your guest.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” He turned back to Emma. “Mom, this is Amber’s cousin Emma. Emma, this is my mom.”

“Nice to meet you Emma,” his mother said, looking at the girl with a scrutinizing eye.

  “You too Mrs. Becker.”

“What have you two been doing all day?” Her gaze was divided between them.

“Looking for you Mom,” Josh said, “You wouldn’t believe what we’ve been through.”

She held up her hand. “Ok, ok, I’d love to hear all about it, but let’s save it for tomorrow over breakfast. I’m dead on my feet from worrying about you all day.”

She turned to Emma. “Emma my dear, it’s much too late for you to be going anywhere. Would you like to spend the night in our guest bedroom?”

Emma smiled. “I would love that Mrs. Becker. Thank you.”

“Then head on up to the bathroom and get ready for bed, and I’ll be right up to find you something to wear. There’s extra towels in the bathroom closet if you want to take a shower.”

“Thank you again.” Emma climbed the stairs and disappeared down the hall to the bathroom.

His mother turned to look at him, but didn’t speak.

  “What?” he finally said.

  “She’s very pretty.”

  “I agree.”

“How long have you known her?”

  “Two days.”

“Two days? I saw the kiss you two shared. That didn’t look like the way you kiss someone after only knowing them for two days.”

“It was a long two days.”

She watched him and paused again. “Just be careful, alright?”

  “Mom.”

“Now give your mother a hug. I want to go to sleep.” After he obeyed, she turned to go up the stairs and then turned back. “And keep in mind I’m a light sleeper.”

  He grinned.

Fifteen minutes later he was leaning against the doorframe of the guest bedroom, smiling at Emma who was in the bed and tucked under the covers.

  “You look comfortable,” he said.

  “Very.”

“I’m sorry we won’t be waking up next to each other.”

  “Me too.”

  “Am I still your guy?”

  She smiled. “Of course.”

“I like the sound of that.”

He walked to the bed and bent over, leaning down to kiss her on the forehead.

Keeping his face close, he said, “I love you.”

She smiled. “I love you too.”

  Epilogue

  Five months later.

  “Who was on the phone?”

Josh opened his eyes to see Emma standing naked at the foot of the bed, drying her hair from the shower. He enjoyed the sight of her fit body, from the curve of her ass to her nicely rounded breasts.

  “Just my
mom,” he replied.

  “Anything new from back home?”

“She said they finally caught Dale Harley. Supposedly he was the last of the zombies wandering around.”

“Dale Harley? Do I know him?”

  “The cow fucker.”

“Oh him. That was a long time ago. How’d he survive so long? Didn’t the zombies give up eating for sex, and would starve if left alone?”

“Normally, but it seems Dale not only liked to fuck the cows, he also like to suck them too.”

“Suck them? What do you mean?”

“Seems he thought their udders were cocks, and was regularly giving them blowjobs. That semen he thought he was swallowing was just ordinary milk, and it kept him alive all this time.”

“Damn,” she said, “that’s a whole lot of sucking. I’m impressed.”

Josh laughed. “Speaking of sucking, why don’t you join me under the covers?”

  “Don’t you have a nine o’clock class?”

  “It’s been cancelled.”

She grinned. “So we have a whole hour?”

  “At least.”

She dropped the towel and crawled onto the bed. When she got halfway up, she started pulling the covers down, exposing him. When they slipped down past his waist, his erect cock came into view.

“Very nice, Zombie Boy. Looks like you’re ready for action.”

“You being naked has that effect on me.”

She smiled. “Even after last night?” She moved up over him, straddling his waist.

“Just makes me want you more.” He looked up into her soft green eyes.

She leaned down for a kiss, and he raised his head to meet her half way. Their lips met softly, and they shared a breath.

She reached between her legs and took him in her hand, rubbing the head between her slick labia.

“Mm,” he said, “looks like I’m not the only one ready for action.”

Emma smiled against his lips, and pressed slowly down on him.
