“We’re supposed to be working,” he said, swallowing thickly.
I thrust my breasts forward as he leaned forward, capturing my taut nipple in his mouth. “I can multitask if you can.”
He responded with a sharp bite to my breast. “Oh, God.”
“You were saying?”
“Right. Work.” He continued to kiss my breasts as I tried to regain my thoughts. “Um, so back to the schools. Uh, ahh… The city hired RND construction, the same company that did the work for the…um…uh…big box stores back in 1992.”
“Keep talking.”
He pushed me back on the bed and pulled my jeans down my body before standing and pulling his shirt over his head. He put his hands on the button of his jeans, but stopped to smirk at me. I stared at the well defined abs on his perfect body. He had scars, but that didn’t detract from his glorious physique. My eyes trailed along the planes of his chest and followed the well defined v that led down to his hard, thick cock. I could see him straining against his jeans already.
“As much as I enjoy you ogling me, we’re supposed to be working. If you stop talking, I stop undressing.”
“Right. Um..Where was I?”
He popped the button on his jeans and started to lower the zipper. “You were saying about the construction company that was hired for both jobs.”
“Right.” He lowered his jeans and I saw his erection jutting out from his boxers that molded to his muscled thighs. “The Mayor’s approval ratings started to fall when the citizens saw that the improvements were only helping people in neighborhoods that were doing well.”
His boxers were off now and his hard length was bobbing up and down as he came back to the bed. I instinctively spread my legs for him and he settled between them. He took my mouth so possessively that I could barely catch my breath when he pulled away. His hot breath fanned across my face as he rocked his body against mine. His erection ran along my panties that were now drenched.
“I thought you didn’t want to get involved with me? That I would be a distraction?”
“I decided I didn’t fucking care. You already are a distraction and not sleeping with you isn’t going to fix that.”
His hand skimmed over my stomach and down to my panties. His thick fingers brushed my clit and slowly circled over the bundle of nerves.
“Ahh!”
“You’re so responsive. Tell me what you want. Do you want my fingers in your pussy?”
A shudder ran through my body at his words. I had never been with someone who talked dirty to me and I wasn’t sure how to respond.
“Yes.”
“Do you want my cock in your pussy?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me how much you want it.”
“I..I..” My breathing was growing erratic as his fingers moved faster, pushing me towards orgasm.
“Do you want my cock pushing inside your tight pussy, pounding you until you scream my name?”
“Yes! Yes. I need it.”
His fingers slipped beneath my panties and ran along my opening, only to drag the moisture back up to my clit and circle once again.
“Oh, fuck! I’m coming!”
My hips bucked and my knees pulled together as I came hard around his fingers. He continued to circle my nub as my body convulsed in pleasure. He barely gave me time to recover before he ripped my panties from my body and thrust inside me, then stilled.
“Goddamn, you’re tight.”
“Move. I need you to move.”
“Give me a minute. I’ll come if I move right now.”
He took a few deep breaths, but I couldn’t wait any longer. I started moving my hips, pushing and pulling as he groaned, his eyes rolling back in gratification. It didn’t take long for him to start moving again. He fucked me hard and deep before flipping me over and pulling my knees up so he could fuck me from behind.
“Your ass is so sexy.” He slapped one cheek as he continued to thrust inside me harder and faster. I could feel his cock deep inside me, every ram propelled me closer to ecstasy.
“Oh, shit. I’m gonna come.”
“Me too. Oh, God. I’m coming!”
A few more deep thrusts and he pushed me over the edge, then pulled out and I felt his release on my back. Thank God he had enough sense to pull out since neither of us had thought to use a condom. I was on the pill, but with everything going on, I hadn’t had time to go home and get my pills, and I most definitely wasn’t ready for motherhood.
I laid with my head on the bed and my ass in the air as I recovered from what could only be described as the best sex I had ever had. Mind blowing, heart pounding, and completely orgasmic. I felt a warm cloth on my back wiping of the evidence of our little fuck fest and then a light brush of his lips against my back. Completely worn out, I decided now was a good time to close my eyes and go to sleep. I faintly registered him pulling me into his arms and pulling the covers over us before I drifted off to la la land.
✯✯✯✯✯
I woke up in what must have been late afternoon because the sun was no longer shining through the window. I was laying on Sebastian’s hard chest listening to the steady beat of his heart. I couldn’t remember the last time I had spent the night with a man, let alone woke up in his bed wanting more. I was usually too wrapped up in stories to worry about when the next time was that I was going to get laid.
I used to think that women didn’t need sex as much as men, but now I was thinking that I just hadn’t been with a man that made me crave sex the way Sebastian did. Even just laying here with him, I wanted him inside me again. I wanted to feel his body moving against mine and feel his hard cock inside me. I wanted his cock in my mouth. That was something I had never really been too fond of before, but now I wanted to give it to Sebastian. I loved how he came undone when I wrapped my lips around his hard length.
“Are you thinking dirty thoughts?”
Startled out of my daydreaming, I looked up at the smirk on Sebastian’s face. “Maybe. How did you know?”
“Your heart rate increased and your breathing was getting ragged. It was either that or a nightmare, but I knew you were already awake.”
In a flash, he was on top of me, his face inches from mine. His dick was rubbing against my pussy. “Were you thinking of me? Of my cock inside you again?”
“Yes. I was thinking about you in my mouth and how much I like it.”
“Really? Well, I wouldn’t want to deny you of the pleasure of my cock.”
A half hour later, Sebastian and I made our way to the shower and spent another half hour in there exploring each other’s bodies. When we finally made it downstairs, I realized how hungry I was. My stomach growled at the lack of food, so I went to the fridge and started pulling out stuff for sandwiches. Cal was sitting at the bank of monitors again and was looking through my notes.
“You’ve got a lot of good stuff here, but I’m not seeing anything that points directly to the Mayor as criminal.”
“I know. I need something more. Right now, it all just looks suspicious. There has to be more to this story though. Why would the Mayor go to all the trouble of killing Danielle if she wasn’t on to something?”
“We don’t know for sure that she was killed.”
Sebastian walked into the room and planted a kiss on my lips before moving to the fridge. I barely caught Cal’s look of disbelief before he schooled his features. Apparently, either Cal had never seen Sebastian with a woman or his behavior was frowned upon. I was guessing it was the second one.
“Do you guys want me to make some sandwiches for you?”
“Two for me, please.” Cal went back to looking at my notes.
“I’ll help you,” Sebastian said as he came up behind me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable with him being so intimate with me in front of Cal. If this was against the rules or something, I didn’t want to flaunt it in his face. I sidestepped Sebastian and went back to the fridge for condiments.
“That’s okay. Why don’t you go
sit down?”
He gave me a strange look, but nodded and sat down at the table with Cal.
“So, what else did you come up with?” He asked as he grabbed the notebook from Cal.
“Well, basically, there are several things that happened over the years and Rudy Moore was paid at the same time some of these things occurred.”
“Okay, you told me about the box stores and the schools. What else?”
I started assembling the sandwiches as I told him what else I found. “Well, back in 2002, he raised taxes so the city could better fund the schools, but the citizens weren’t on board after what happened with the schools being built in ’96. Somehow, he got the bill passed and it came out later that the wealthiest would get all these tax breaks if they donated just a small amount to the school. Also, there has been some question over the years if all the extra money is going to the schools. The school districts don’t feel that they have benefited in any way from those tax increases.”
“That still just sounds like dirty politics to me. Freckles, I’m sorry, but I’m not seeing a smoking gun here. You’re gonna have to have something more substantial to have a real story here.”
“Well, I haven’t even got to the best part yet.”
He waved his hand in a regal motion for me to continue. I brought the plates over to Cal and Sebastian and set them down, then went back for my own plate.
“There was one last event that I tied to Rudy Moore. In 2008, the city passed a huge infrastructure bill that allowed the city to raise taxes to repair roads and bridges. Again, the only ones that were fixed were in good neighborhoods. There is one thing that all of these events have in common. Can you guess what it is?”
“Rudy Moore.”
“Not just Rudy Moore. It’s who the city hires for every project. Rudy Moore was always hired by Mayor Johnson, but I can’t directly link him to the projects that went on around the city. He was always listed as ‘the mediator’, which I can only assume means that he dug up dirt on city council members to sway them in the Mayor’s direction.
“The real link in all of this is who he hired to do the actual job. Despite the fact that other companies outbid and had better timetables, RND Construction was always hired for the job. RND was not the best option for the infrastructure job since they specialize in constructing buildings. There were other, more qualified, companies that were cheaper to go with and would have finished the projects six months to a year earlier. Also, it was built into the contracts that RND could choose the subcontractors that they needed for other work, such as electrical and cement work.”
“Concrete,” Sebastian interrupted.
“What?”
“It’s concrete. Cement is a binding agent in concrete. You pour concrete, not cement.”
“Whatever, Mr. Know-it-all. The point is, these companies were hired for every job.”
“Well, is that unusual for the city to hire to keep the jobs local?”
“Well, they may, but when they consider taxpayer dollars, they usually try to go with the lowest bid. RND has never been the lowest bid. It just seems like there’s more to it. I’d like to look into it some more.”
“Why do I get the feeling I’m not going to like this?”
“Okay, so I found a news article about an RND office worker that mysteriously vanished one day. Guess when that happened?”
“Please, enlighten me.”
“1992. The same year that the city made the agreement with the box stores. Her name was Cheryl Haynes. She was last seen at work and no one can remember seeing her leave work, but her car wasn’t there. There were never any leads on her disappearance.”
“So, now you think that the Mayor had an office worker murdered?”
“Of course not. RND had her killed. I’m guessing that she came across something that she wasn’t supposed to and she was killed for it.”
Sebastian leaned forward and rubbed his hands over his face. “Freckles, I really don’t want to rain on your parade, but none of this sounds like evidence. It sounds more to me like you’re seeing things you want to. People go missing all the time. That doesn’t mean that Cheryl Haynes was murdered at RND.”
“In 2008,” Sebastian rolled his eyes as I continued. “A reporter went missing while investigating the infrastructure bill. I’m going to talk to my boss about it.”
“Did the reporter work for your paper?”
“Yep and Darren was the editor at the time. He’ll know if there was anything fishy about the story or if I’m ‘seeing things I want to’.” I made sure to use air quotes to get my point across. Cal, who had been silent for most of this conversation spoke as he looked over my notes.
“It says here that some of the city council members were listed as council in the Mayor’s ledger. They were paid in 1996. Wasn’t that the same year that the Mayor blocked the bills for where the schools would be built?”
“Yes!” I got up and walked over to sit next to Cal. Obviously, he was catching on to the fact that there was something more here.
“It looks like the poorer neighborhood started fighting back against city council in 2009.”
“They did. Lower income neighborhoods organized a group called Take Back The City. They went out and protested decisions that were being made by the city council. Two of the leaders vanished, while other members had accidents that got them killed. Eventually the movement died down and the people stopped fighting back. Of course, the news didn’t report it that way. I had to dig to find a newspaper that covered it. They’re somewhat of a conspiracy paper, so no one really took the articles seriously.”
Sebastian sighed, “If there was something to these stories, don’t you think your editor would have covered them? Especially when the reporter from your paper died?”
“Well, that’s what I plan on finding out. It could be that he wasn’t aware of what the reporter was investigating. Sometimes reporters investigate, but don’t say anything about a story until they have more to go on.”
“Look, I’m not saying that there’s nothing here, I just think that it’s dirty politics. What’s the most that would come of it? The Mayor would be forced out? You already said that his popularity is in the tank.”
“I still have more that I have to investigate. This is just the beginning. I can feel it.”
“Fine. What can we do to help?”
“I need financial records from RND Construction that are connected to these projects. I’m thinking that they must have some deal with the Mayor in order for the Mayor to continue to use them for every job.”
“I can call Becky and Rob. They can look into it, but they’re already working on the offshore accounts. Cal, why don’t you take a couple hours off. Freckles and I will keep watch.”
“Sure, Cap. Can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Freckles, can you give us a minute?”
I stood and made my way to the stairs, but I didn’t go far. I had a feeling that I should hear whatever it was that Cal had to say. I tucked into a corner so that I could still hear their conversation.
“Cap, what are you doing?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Sleeping with a client?”
“What the fuck I do is my business. Last I checked, I’m still the owner of this company.” His tone was low and lethal. “I also recall that you’re on probation right now, so you might want to think twice about how you speak to me.”
“Cap, you know I mean no disrespect, but we’ve always had rules about clients. This wouldn’t fly with any of us. You want to fuck her? I’ve got no problem with that, but don’t let it go any further.”
“Who said it was? I haven’t made her any promises or asked for more. Neither has she. She’s a good lay and if we choose to burn off some excess energy between the sheets, that’s our prerogative. There are no feelings involved here and my head is perfectly clear on what my job is.”
I didn’t stick around to hear any more. I wasn’t looking for a boyfriend
or anything, but I did think that we at least had some chemistry. Maybe when the case was over we could see where this would take us, but any ideas of that happening were dashed with his harsh words. A good lay. That’s what I was. I shook my head in disgust as I headed to my room. Sometimes I could be so naive.
CHAPTER NINE
Sebastian
I HAD BEEN waiting for Maggie to come downstairs for the better part of an hour. After Cal’s talk with me, he went to his room to get some shut eye and I went up to see Maggie. She was lying on the bed staring at the wall. I had asked her what was wrong, but she told me she was fine and was just thinking about her next step in the story. She promised she would be down soon.
So, here I sat like a lovesick fool waiting for Maggie to come down so I could spend some more time with her. It was ridiculous really. I shouldn’t have slept with her because I was already crazy about her. I didn’t want to admit it, but there was something about her that captivated me. For all I knew, she really did only want sex. In which case, I would end up making a fool of myself because I thought this could go somewhere. Not right now, of course, but maybe when the case was over.
I wasn’t sure how we would make it work since we lived an hour apart. Sure, it wasn’t that far, but we both worked crazy schedules. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that this wouldn’t work between us. Whatever happened between now and when the story was finished would be fun and nothing else.
Maggie came downstairs about a half hour later. She was biting her lip and seemed to be thinking hard about something.
“What’s up, Freckles?”
“I need a phone. I want to call Darren and find out what he knows about the reporter that went missing.”
“Sure.”
She walked over to the house phone and dialed her boss.
