“I’m sorry I caused the delay,” Grace apologized.

“Nonsense. They needed time to clam their nerves.” Dr. Robbie glanced from her to Ward. “Are things settled now?”

Ward caught Grace’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “Right as rain.”

Grace could not keep the smile from her lips. “I will accept the Babbitts gracious offer. Thank you, Dr. Robbie.”

“Thank you. Libby will appreciate your help with Ander’s mother. She can be quite a handful.”

Tristan was at the doorway, motioning them forward. Dr. Robbie and Grace hung back and let Ward go in, hatless, and then they tiptoed to the door to watch.

The sisters and their brother met in the center of the room and surveyed one another. Joy was the first to step forward and embrace her brother. Melly and Abby soon joined her, and they exclaimed how much Ward looked like Melly. Then Tristan, Joshua, and Thatcher joined their wives and welcomed Ward into the family.

Dr. Robbie’s arm encircled Grace’s waist, and they both wiped away tears.

The family settled into their seats, Joy and Abby seated next to Ward, and Thatcher with Melly in an adjoining chair.

“We have so much to tell you,” Abby said. “It’s hard to know where to begin.”

Ward gave a nod. “All of you have been through...”

Joy held up a hand. “But we were blessed.” She blushed. “I mean, I was. I should not speak for Abby and Melly.”

But Melly was nodding her agreement. “As bad as things were, they could have been worse for me.”

Ward gaze traveled from one sister to another. “I would like to know one thing.”

Joy laughed. “I can guess. Dr. Robbie told us you have no memory of our former life, and do not know your name. It’s Abel, Abel Harperson.”

Ward’s eyes sought Grace who still stood in the doorway. He smiled. “That’s good to know.”

Tristan was standing behind Joy and squeezed her shoulder. “We’ll soon be leaving, to establish a school at Lonely Grove. Dr. Robbie tells us you are traveling to Boston with your nurse.”

Ward’s eyes were still on Grace, but he pulled his gaze away. “Yes, to consult with a specialist.”

Thatcher gave a nod. “Wherever you go, whenever you decide to come back, we wanted you to know Lonely Grove will be your home.”

The others nodded their agreement. Melly wiped a tear from her eye. “We’ve only found you to lose you again.”

Ward shook his head. “No. I’ll be home as soon as I can, as often as I can, with my nurse.”

Abby noticed Grace in the doorway. “Of course. You and Grace will always be welcomed. It will be her home, also.”

Grace’s heart swelled until she thought it would burst.

Abby held out a hand. “Join us. You’re part of our family, too, as long as you are caring for Abel.”

Ward only had eyes for her as Grace and Dr. Robbie came into the room. Joy moved aside to allow Grace to sit beside Ward.

Grace nodded. “Thank you for your kindness. I’ll stay with Ward as long as he needs me.”

“And that will be forever,” he whispered in her ear.

“Does that mean what we think it does?” Abby asked, smiling at Grace.

Grace folded her hands in her lap. “We’ll have to wait and see.”

The others whooped in laughter, and Thatcher slapped Ward on the back. “You been faking to get this pretty nurse to care for you.”

Ward laughed. “Who wouldn’t?” He grew serious and looked at Dr. Robbie. His eyes softened. “I know you are in mourning, and I’m sorry for not being more considerate.”

Dr. Robbie shook her head. “Don’t let my husband’s death affect your joy. Sometimes great sorrow can lead to great happiness.”

“That’s true if we accept God’s grace,” Melly said.

They nodded in agreement, including Grace, and she glanced up at Ward.

Her life had changed in a moment, the very second she’d looked into his turquoise eyes in the midst of tragedy. She and Ward still needed time to get to know one another and would face obstacles, but they would manage.

For in those turquoise eyes that had captured her, she saw love for her shining back. Love, unimagined.

  About Abagail Eldan

MY FATHER WAS A CAREER soldier, and I resided in several states as well as overseas. My reading addiction was fed when we moved into an old house in Toul, France. On the floor of the basement stood stack after stack of books. What a treasure trove! With no distractions, I was in hog heaven.

A long and winding road led me back to the county of my parents' birth. I
come from a long line of farmers on both sides.

After attending a total of six universities and becoming certified in all maths, sciences, and English, I taught at the middle-school level for nineteen years and am semi-retired since I also am...

  a peacemaker, a servant, a defender. A writer.

Excerpt from Brokken Promises by Abagail Eldan

Fritz Brokken stopped pacing and turned to stand next to his brother-in-law. “No matter the path we choose, there will be serious repercussions. Curt and Karl will be impacted. And what of Karl’s new wife? How will she react?” He leaned against the mantle and stared into the fire.

Chance cleared his throat. “You can always send Miss Jenkins away, Fritz, and stay in Brokken. Tell Mrs. Howe you have no idea what happened to her.”

Fritz glanced over his shoulder to glare at him. “I made a promise to Cam, and I do not intend to break it. Ever.” He gritted his teeth, and Chance slapped his back, making him bite into his tongue. He glared at his grinning brother-in-law.

  “Good,” Chance said.

Deborah walked to them and lightly touched Fritz’s shoulder. “We will support you, always.”

Fritz turned to face his sister and her husband and raked his fingers through his hair. “But what of Curt and Karl?”

Deborah gave him a look of disgust. “Do you not know your own brothers? They will uphold your decision.”

Fritz had to ask. “And what of Sally Jane? You will adopt her, but Cam will remain her aunt. Won’t she be teased, bullied even?”

Deborah’s eyes softened. “Perhaps she’ll have the Brokken stubbornness and the grit of the Hales to see her through life.”

After a moment’s reflection, Fritz nodded and then glanced at the clock on the mantle. “It’s after midnight. I shouldn’t have awakened you. I’d better get going so y’all can get some sleep.”

Deborah touched his arm. “Spend the night here...throw a pallet on the floor. Wait until the sun comes up so it will be somewhat warmer.”

The thought of riding back to town in the dark, cold night was not appealing. “All right. I’ll go see to my horse and be back in a minute.”

Chance yawned. “Be sure to lock up when you come back in.”

Fritz nodded and went to tend his horse. When he came back, someone had arranged a pallet of quilts on the floor near the fireplace. As Chance had asked, he locked up and lay down, contented. He’d see Cam tomorrow, and all would be right with God’s help. With that thought, he fell asleep.

FRITZ AWOKE THE NEXT morning to the sound of commotion and jumped to his feet, pulling a suspender over his shoulder and grabbing his boots. When he swung open the door, Karl stood there, looking none too happy.

His brother frowned at him. “You were to meet me at the station,” he fussed, pushing his glasses a notch up his nose and peering at him. “Why are you in a state of undress?”

Without waiting for an answer, Karl ushered in the most beautiful woman Fritz had ever seen. Karl apologized to her profusely.

Fritz made a slight bow, planning to greet her, but before he had a chance, Karl held up a hand. “Before I forget, I have a letter for you.”

Fritz paused and frowned. “A letter? From whom?”

His brother, his brows drawn together, tilted his chin up. “I do not know from whom. Someone thrust it in my hands as we left the station. Some woman.”

“When?” Fritz took the letter from his brother’s hand and tore it open.

“Two hours ago,” Karl’s wife answered. Her voice was richly accented although familiar and pleasant.

Deborah came from the kitchen, but Fritz did not hear what she said. He gave a nod to his new sister-in-law, pushed past his brother, and went out to find his horse.

By the time his horse was saddled, and he was mounted, Deborah appeared on the porch. “Was the note from Camellia? You can meet the train at its next stop. Wait a moment.”

Fritz had already reined the horse around and dug his heels into the horse’s sides without replying.

Please be sure to check out the other books in the Brokken Road Romances.
