I backed away. “Are you serious? Don’t toy with me.”

“I’ve never been more serious. You can’t leave me when I’ve only just found you.” He leaned in again, and I stopped him with a hand to his chest.

“But, about the teaching position? Is there really one available?” I wouldn’t be a burden on Traci or him.

“Mrs. Tsosie has been ready to retire for a few years now. She’s given our children a good forty years and it’s time for her to step down and care for her husband.” He leaned forward, and I allowed him to kiss me. I pulled him close, my hand in his hair, and opened my soul to him through our kiss.

He touched his forehead to mine and murmured, “Will you be mine, for now and for always?” He pulled away, waiting for my answer.

I wrinkled my nose trying to understand. “Are you asking me to marry you?” Was he crazy?

“Yes. Marry me. I can’t have you leave me, and I’ve had enough of long engagements.”

He had the most hopeful expression, but I didn’t know what to say. Was I willing to leave my life in California? To move here and commit to marrying him after only two weeks? It was too soon. I gazed at the ocean, wishing for a sign.

And then I saw it. “Look!” I pointed. “Whales!”

A Humpback whale lifted its enormous body into the air and slammed back into the ocean. Several others in the pod slapped their tails and breached the water in a display of jubilation that mimicked the joyful beating of my heart. It was the miracle I’d longed for, and at that moment I knew that I would leave my past and my history in California.

“Yes!” I said. “Yes, I will fill your teaching position. And yes, I will be yours if you’ll be mine. We will love each other, and we’ll make our own history and our future here, together.”

Storm wrapped his arm around me, kissing me passionately, and then held me to him. I nestled into his embrace, and together we watched the whales splash and dive and frolic. “I love this place,” I said, but it was more than a location. It was the place where I had first come alive.

Even with the excitement and wonder of seeing the whales, I couldn’t keep my eyes from Storm for long. I stood on my tiptoes, pressing my lips to his, and knowing the Alaskan winters could never get too cold if Storm was near.

  About the Author

Tina Peterson Scott was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. For much of her childhood, she could be found nestled against a branch high in their pecan tree and reading a book. Her favorites at the time were fantasy and mystery, and it delighted Tina when her mother read to her from Grimm’s Fairytales and the stories of Hans Christian Andersen.

Tina and her husband have seven children and a growing number of grandchildren. Other than large family get-togethers involving lots of food and fun, she enjoys writing, watercolor painting, long walks, ice cream, and traveling to Europe—especially to her father’s ancestral home of Denmark.
