The Girl and the Hunt (Emma Griffin FBI Mystery Book 6) Page 19

by A J Rivers

With the exception of the chill from the morgue and the disorienting effect of whatever sedative I was given, I'm fine. I learn I was missing for at least two hours, and they only realized it when a nurse heard my phone ringing in Greg's room and answered it to hear Dean upset because I’d stopped talking to him so suddenly. He'd left Feathered Nest early that morning to come into town with the medical records he unearthed. He knew I was busy and likely wouldn't be going back for at least a few days, but he didn't want to wait to show me what he found.

Thank goodness he didn't. If it wasn't for him demanding they contact Eric or Bellamy, no one would have realized I was missing, and I'd still be in the morgue drawer. Or with whoever stuffed me there. I can only think of two options. And that's far too many.

Eric and Bellamy rush into the room and come to my bedside. I brush away their fussing, done with being emotional. At least I'm going to pretend for their sake. In reality, I am scared shitless. It takes some time to convince the doctors I don't need to be admitted and to finish my report with the police. When both are done, I'm finally allowed to go back to Greg's room and curl up on the couch. I won't be staying here tonight, but I'll stay for a while longer.

Suddenly, Sam bursts into the room, his eyes wild.

"Emma," he gasps, running to the side of the couch and dropping down to a crouch so he can wrap his arms around me. "What the hell happened?"

"I don't know," I tell him. I go over the story with him, and he pulls me against him again, kissing me.

  "I love you," he whispers.

  "I love you, too."

"How does something like this happen?" he demands, standing up and stalking through the room as if he's just trying to find someone to blame. He turns back to me. "Emma, I need you to listen to me. I know you've been insisting that this Catch Me guy and your uncle are not the same person."

"They aren't," I cut him off. "They aren't the same person. And if you think there's only one person, you're only going to look for one person. There are two."

"The postcard you got with the link that showed the video of Greg's room. That was from Catch Me," he says.

  "Yes," I say.

"But it showed your father's brother come into Greg's room. Don't you think it's a little convenient if it's two people, one would just know the other had planted a camera?" he asks.

"Yes, that would be very convenient. But not the other way around," I say.

  "What?" he asks.

"You keep insisting that my father's brother is Catch Me. But it doesn't make sense. One is following me; the other is tormenting me. It's very unlikely my uncle would know the camera was planted in the room and show up just to scare me. But it's very likely Catch Me knew he was going to the hospital and put the camera there so I could see him there. Catch Me isn't my father's brother, Sam. But he definitely knows who he is and what he's doing. They're orbiting each other, and it's just a matter of time before they crash."

"Emma," Bellamy's voice says from behind Sam.

She left soon after I got back to this room to see if she could get better luck getting Greg's chart, but now she's standing at the door with fear in her eyes.

  "Bells, what's wrong?" I ask.

  She draws in a breath.

"A supply closet was raided, and there are several scalpels missing. One of the rooms had all the linens stripped from the bed, and they're unaccounted for. But it’s not just that."

  "What else?"

  "Martin's gone."
