“JACK!” she screamed, her body turning into an electromagnetic pulse. “JACK!” She couldn’t stop screaming his name.
He melted into human form, so small yet so large, and as he came to, he was covered in blood, his right side the color of freshly bloomed poppies, his body marred with ugly red lines from Harley’s claws.
Dr. Xi pushed past her to look at his torso, finding the gunshot wound. Jack groaned, head slumped to one side, eyes fluttering as he struggled to look around, to speak, eyes searching the room, muscles twitching as if he still had fight in him.
The doctor let out a long, relieved sigh. “Just a graze. We can clean this up easily. No entrance of the bullet.”
Mara gingerly stepped to him, wincing as pain shot through her heel. Her arm was useless, limp and hanging from her shoulder like an electrified noodle, pain shooting into her back at random intervals.
“Mara? You safe?” Jack asked, eyes open and looking at her, but strangely unfocused. His hair was filled with dirt and glass, and he panted hard, the short bursts of breath terrifying Mara. The room spun like a child’s merry-go-round, and she began to shake from within.
“I’m here, Jack. Here and safe,” she managed to say before the world turned white.
