by David Kristoph

They could not find the Emperor's heir within the palace. By then it did not matter.

When all was confirmed, the lieutenants of the ground forces returned to the west section of the city. They were carried there hanging underneath a Riverhawk, watching their God's light shine off the criss-crossed street rivers below. They landed softly in the tiled clearing of the unremarkable rooftop their leader had chosen as a base of command, one corner of its roof still damaged from the battle. They strode to the edge of the roof where their leader stood, a young woman who had proved her worth in the battle by killing two Commanders of the Gold Wing, Jayce and Brynn. Who among them could claim a greater feat?

One of the men stepped forward, his voice strong and proud. "Resistance has ceased. The inner city has fallen."

She looked out over the drowned city, face hard and determined. "Not the inner city," Katy said. "Our city."
