Fear and terror and emptiness swirled around inside me at once. Neveresis was going to kill him.
Neveresis placed the palm of his hand to Jack’s mouth. “Let’s see how much you can say when your lungs are filled with water stupid mortal.”
“Stop, please,” I shouted. “Please, Neveresis, I promise to go back to Osarius with you and marry you if you let him go. Just please don’t hurt him. He doesn’t deserve any of this. Please,” I pleaded.
“Neveresis’s blue eyes met mine. “You’re lying, Kenina.”
“No, I’m serious.” I shook my head. “But you must let him go.”
Neveresis studied me for a moment while the heat built up inside me. I had a plan, and I was hoping and praying more than anything, it would work.
“Prove it,” he finally said.
I took a deep breath. “I will prove it with a kiss. You can’t deny you have always wanted to kiss me. Well, here’s your chance.”
Neveresis dropped Jack to the ground. Jack rolled over so he was facing me, his green eyes consumed by moisture. “No, Kenina.” His words came out hoarse, rough.
My body trembled as Neveresis stopped in front of me and grinned. “Dear, Kenina, I have been waiting for this day for what seems like forever.” Neveresis took me in his arms.
I brought my hands up to his face and smiled sweetly. “Immortals can be so dumb sometimes,” I said as I pressed my hands to his face, releasing the energy inside.
Neveresis screamed as he backed away, bringing his own hands to his burning flesh to cool his wounds. I pushed him backward, sending us both to the ground. I placed my hands to his chest, ready to scorch his heart, but two hands grasped me around the waist and pulled me off of him.
Jack held me tightly in his arms on the ground as Neveresis, still in pain, rolled over and pulled himself to his feet. He backed away, stumbling. “You have not seen the last of me, Kenina,” he yelled angrily as he lifted his one hand in the air and created a wall of water behind him. He stepped into the water. “I know someone who can bring you back.” With those words he disappeared as the water fell to the ground.
“So, that was the fiancée,” Jack asked as he laughed weakly. “I say he’s a little pissed you have a new boyfriend.”
“Maybe, just a little,” I said, smiling. Then something occurred to me, something that almost slipped by me. “Wait, did you say boyfriend?” I shifted my body so I was peering into his green eyes.
“Well, what else would you call it?” He grinned and tightened his grip on me.
The heat rushed into my cheeks as Jack leaned in to kiss me. I broke off the kiss and gazed at him. “You know, he’ll be back. And he won’t be alone next time.”
Sarah stumbled up next us and crouched down. “Yes, Kenina. You know the little twerp will bring your father.”
Jack glanced back and forth between me and Sarah. “That’s okay. I’m not worried at all.”
“Why’s that?” I gazed at him, confused.
“Because we’ll be ready next time.” Jack said the words with a grin.
