  She gazed out at the water, which was steel gray in the filtered light and dotted with whitecaps. The waves were low and rolled gently toward the shore. From her vantage point on the sand, it looked calm and soothing, hiding all the drama that lived underneath. The big fish eating the smaller fish, the even bigger fish ruthlessly taking down anything they could. Life playing out in its never ending, merciless fashion.

  “Are you looking forward to your trip this week?” Will asked. He rubbed his thumb against the back of her hand.

  “Yes.” Nat nodded. “You know, I really am. It will be good to get away for a few days.”
