The Rise of the New Bloods, From Dark Beginnings Page 19

by K A HAMBLY

In the background, I heard the faint relaxing sound of Celtic music coming from the speakers. For once, I felt relaxed as I leaned back on the bed, where I could feel two warm hands gently massaging my shoulders.

I breathed in deeply and closed my eyes.

Slowly she ran her hands down my chest, and one by one opened the buttons on my shirt. ‘Come here…’ I whispered.

I held her hand, and turned around to face her on the bed.

She smiled at me with her red lips as I brushed her dark hair back that fell over her breasts. I had noticed the warmth of the candlelight illuminated a sexy glow to her face just when I felt her hands reach down to my crotch and unzipped the fly on my jeans.

I pulled her in close to my flesh and wrapped my legs around her body. She tilted her head to the side inviting me to press a tender kiss on her neck. I wanted her in more ways than she could ever have known. The voice was still quite dominant in my head but I suppressed the urge to taste her the way I wanted to when I saw her that night at the bar.

Now our bodies were intertwined she sighed excitedly as I slid my hands down her back and unhooked her red lace bra.

My eyes flickered open to the sound of the morning New York traffic outside.

I glanced around the room; I must've slept like a human last night I thought, despite the odd feeling of craving blood. I felt relaxed and content amongst the red silk bed sheets knowing April was by my side. I had just turned over to look at April when a piercing of light that came through the crack in the curtain singed my face.

‘What the fuck!’ I yelled covering my head with the duvet. ‘April, don't open the curtains whatever you do.’ I said, almost startling her.

‘Why, what’s wrong?’ she said, sounding half asleep.

‘I don't know yet, but it can't be good,’ I said, feeling spun out.

The phone started ringing, and I flinched.

‘Answer it, it may be Blaze,’ I said.

April sat upright on the bed, and answered the phone.

‘Oh Blaze, what’s wrong now?’ She said as she checked her alarm clock. ‘Do you realise it’s only 7.45 in the am…on a Sunday?’ She sighed.

‘Here,’ she said, handing me the receiver. ‘It’s Blaze. My God, I swear you two are like a married couple on times.’

‘Something has happened and you’re not gonna believe it…’ I blurted out.

‘Well you’re not gonna believe this either, it’s Ryder! He's gone.’

‘Gone? What do you mean by that?’

‘No idea, he must’ve taken off before it got light. There is a note addressed to you though.’

‘Is there? Well, I have another problem right now. I am not sure if the curse really was broken last night?’

  ‘What are you talking about?’

‘Well, how do I put this, oh I know…I was almost turned to fucking dust just now.’

‘What the fuck. I’ll be over in ten minutes alright. Just don’t make a move until I get there.’

Blaze hung up and as I bent over the bed to put the receiver back, I saw something glistening by the lamp.

‘Oh shit!’ I said, nudging April awake again.

  ‘The Ankh is here.’
