“Snotti will come for me. She won’t let me rot here much longer.”
“Sorry to have to tell you this, but Snotti’s dead. I saw one of those hybrids dragging her body into the woods. Diermont thinks she is but missing, so he is distracted right now trying to locate his wayward mate. Far too distracted to remember where he placed you, it seems. And it will only get worse once he discovers she is not coming back to him.”
“You monster! Don’t do this to me.”
“You are the monster who preyed on the poor villagers and crofters of Adevax.”
“They were peasants and serfs! Who would miss them?”
“I missed them. I grew up with them. They were like family.”
“We were your family. Not those peasants. A little bit of blood draining and defiling and you throw a tantrum over it. It boggles the mind,” she said with a dismissive wave of her hand. “I didn’t grow up in the North, but even I understood that the lords required sustenance and it wasn’t from fruits, vegetables, or meats. Northerners are blood drinkers. You are one. What is the problem here?”
“I don’t expect you to understand.” Gwyneth was a noblewoman. She didn’t know what it was like to be subject to anyone. “Farewell. May your death be quick and painless.” He knew Diermont would leave Gwyneth in the cell, thinking her presence would lure Modez to her cunt to stop the mating bond decay. But Bloodfanger didn’t see that happening. He captured her gaze and used his power to wipe her mind. “I was never here. You will forget our conversation.” Her one good eye flickered in response and he knew she would remember nothing of his confession.
He took his leave, not knowing or caring what would become of Gwyneth. Modez stood in a corner of the darkened cell, growling like an animal. Gwyneth was responsible for his sad state. It made him uncomfortable to see a once strong warrior reduced to a mindless beast. It remained to be seen whether the male would recover.
It was time for him to pay another visit to the Agrippa abode. That lady would be interested to hear of recent events and he had much to tell her. There was still more he wouldn’t tell her. This time, things would go his way. He would make certain of it.
A note about the next Vampire book (LOB#6):
Those readers who want a hint of what will come in the upcoming book, read on.
Our couples will be reunited in the next book. Kiera will confront her grandmother and will learn more about her Roman heritage, but it will be some time before she learns the extent of Marly’s involvement in the Hydra business. She will struggle with certain health issues. Eventually, she will yearn for Modez. He has gone feral and it is also possible that he is under another’s control. Cassia will miss Cabrian horribly and will use Bloodfanger to keep tabs on his condition; he is her only connection to the villa, although she knows she cannot trust him. Marly will continue to experiment on hybrids and will send for Wilma; however, as we learned in the fourth book Wilma is not available. She will resort to using Cassia’s stepsister, Fortuna, and the girl will be highly reluctant. Eventually Marly will try to draw Kiera and Cassia deeper into the family business, which will lead to major complications. Despite all of this, our two couples will find a way to reconnect. Diermont will get even crazier when he cannot find Snotti, and some of the lords begin to think of rebellion.
