“Calm down. It’s not like we know anything. It’s all just speculation.” Gran pulled a cigarette from thin air and tapped her fingers against the wooden table.

“That means they’re still in trouble. The entire compound. The entire Order.” Numerous faces drifted through my mind.

And that’s when my phone rang.

I picked it up on the second ring. “Leslie, this is Killian. I hate to bother you, but this is about Alistair.”

  “Oh, no. What’s happened?”

  “He’s disappeared.”

I’d have to be stronger than I ever thought I could be and save the man I was tied to for the good of us all, or go down trying.

“I’ll go start the packing,” Gran said and stubbed her cigarette out.

A slight knock came at the door. Upon opening it, there rested a bouquet of deep orange and yellow sunflowers attached to a newspaper article with my picture captioned under the headline: Author Returns from the Dead. I lifted them up and flipped the newspaper over. On it was drawn a Norse compass, followed by a simple message in black permanent marker: Watch out.

“Sunflower?” I whispered her name and only heard the quick feet of someone hurrying down the stairwell.

How was she involved in this? And was it for good or extreme evil?

  Only time would tell.

“Gran, grab the larger suitcase.” I slammed the door shut, praying that the spells would return to my memory. Those I’d studied and spent hours learning with Sunflower.

The grimoire had served as a beacon, I recalled, but it also must have unlocked a power within me. Something I’d needed: access to my potential. Yes, rogue vampires were not done with the Order and me, and for this adventure, I’d need my dragon, too.

“Hold on, Alistair, I’m coming,” I whispered.

Come hell or high water, we weren’t going down without a fight.
