Mistress Of Convenience Page 16

'Let them wait,' he had murmured, finding the exact spot at the side of her neck where the touch of his lips always reduced her to hungry need.

'It's Robert's christening today,' she had added, several seconds later, but without any real urgency in her voice.

'Mmm…so it is,' he had replied.

If any of their guests had found it odd that they should arrive at the breakfast table rather later than planned none of them had been impolite enough to say so, but Suzy thought she had caught Sir Peter Verey's fiancée, Anne, focusing on her thoughtfully.

She liked Anne, and thought she would make Sir Peter a good wife and the children an excellent stepmother. Already she was building rapport with them, and it made Suzy smile to hear how many times Lucy mentioned her name when she was talking to her.

The sun was shining and their guests were now filing into the old church.

Robert woke up and looked around with interest.

He was very much his father's son, Suzy reflected—and not just in the way he looked. He had Luke's sometimes imperious and questioning manner, even at six months old.

As they followed their guests into the church Luke took Robert from her, cradling him expertly. And as she watched them Suzy saw father and son exchange a knowing male-to-male look.

Her heart flooded with emotion and instinctively she moved closer to Luke. She was so happy, so blessed, so loved.

Luke was her other half and she his. Deep down inside herself Suzy knew that they had been fated to meet. Fated to meet one another and fated to love one another.

  They were soul mates.

In Luke's arms Robert smiled up at his father, and Suzy touched her stomach gently.
