  “NO!” James yelled.

Daniel lay motionless and bleeding from the head wound. Without thought, James threw himself at the gunman, knocking him off balance and raining down a flurry of fists on the surprised man. Rage had overtaken James at the sight of his fallen friend. Emilia stood frozen to the spot, horror playing out in front of her eyes.

James hit the man on the ground one last time and removed the gun from his limp hand. Turning his attention to Daniel, he knelt beside him to feel for a pulse. Nothing. No breath, his colour draining.

After all we’ve been through and it ends like this, James thought, his head bowed.

  “Is he . . . ?”

“Dead—yes. Bastards, the lot of them. FUCKING BASTARDS!”

James felt Emilia’s hand on his shoulder. He looked up at her through tears and stood to face her. “We need to leave. We’re out of time and there’s nothing I can do for him now.’

They grabbed all they could and left the carnage behind them. James felt guilty for leaving Daniel’s body behind but knew if they stayed any longer, they would run the risk of being outnumbered.

Emilia glanced over at her old friend. He looked shaken and pale. She knew no words would be of any comfort to James now. All she knew is that they had to get away as quickly as possible and find a safe place for them both.

She started the ignition and reversed the car, gently releasing the clutch. But the rearview mirror blackened as a van screeched to a halt directly behind the car.

James shot Emilia a look of fear. They were too late. Four men jumped out of the van and surrounded Emilia’s car, guns raised and pointed at them.

“Get out of the car—NOW!” the tallest of the four men shouted.

“Do as they say, Emilia. We’ll figure something out. Let’s just stay alive for now,” James said.

Emilia stepped out first, followed by James on the opposite side. Immediately they were both forced to the ground, their wrists cable-tied behind their backs.

“Check inside for the others—and you, call in the cleaners.”

  “Yes, sir.”

The first soldier disappeared through the entrance of the hotel while James and Emilia were bundled into the back of the van. Emilia waited for the door to slam shut and be driven away to some undisclosed location. Her eyes widened at what she saw next.

The soldier who had been tasked with searching for the others crashed through one of the side windows and landed just short of where Emilia and James lay. The body was distorted and missing an arm. What the hell? she thought.

The answer to her question stood in the doorway. Covered in the dead soldier’s blood, Daniel walked towards the remaining soldiers, taking repeated gunshot wounds. Shot after shot, he still moved forward, eyes that were once the deepest of blue now black as night.

Two of the three men remaining tried to take Daniel on and restrain him but were quickly dealt with. Daniel’s fist smashed through the man’s chest and out the other side. The second lost his intestines. They dribbled out at Daniel’s feet.

The last remaining soldier, the one who had given the orders, emptied all of his ammo into Daniel’s chest with no effect. Frozen to the spot, the leader stood face-to-face with Daniel.

“You’ve taken enough from me. It ends now.”
