Chapter One.
“I’m gonna to do it.” She stood up and handed him her beer. David accepted the bottle, knowing she’d drop it if he didn’t lock his long fingers around the neck by the time she released it. Her green eyes sparkled with mischievous energy.
“No, you aren’t. Sit down.” His laughter made her cheeks turn red and the bubbly smile she wore a moment before faded into a frown. Some people say they wear their emotions on their sleeves but Jade wore hers boldly on her face. David swallowed back his laughter and coughed to clear his throat. “You can’t. Your Mom will be pissed.”
“I can to,” Her foot stomped. “I’m twenty-one and you only have to be eighteen to get a tattoo.” Jade pushed her fists into her wide hips. “She can be pissed all she wants, but that isn’t gonna change anything. By the time she knows about it, it’ll already be done. Plus,” She allowed one hip to pop out like the tiny diva she thought she was and rolled her eyes. “I want to show it off tomorrow for St. Paddy’s day.”
David shook his head and stood up. He was over a foot taller than Jade’s five foot two frame and packed with so much muscle people normally stepped back to let him pass by no matter where he went. “Fine, have it Jade’s way, but I’m warning you.” He pointed a finger down at her upturned nose. “She’ll probably kick you out for good this time.” David paused to let what he’d said sink into her brain. Her mom had already kicked her out of the house twice now for doing dumb shit and it was easy to tell her tolerance for Jade’s immaturity was almost at its whit’s end. “If I can’t change your mind, at least let me tag along and make sure you don’t get yourself into any extra trouble.”
Jade’s eyes rolled into the back of her head again and she let out a low wailing sound. David was always more cautious and less fun, that’s what made it easy to keep him around as her best friend. He was her safe place to cry when everyone else pointed their figures and screamed ‘I told you so’ at her. She’d been pushing her luck with her mom lately, that was true, and each little fight would boil into a full out war. Her Mom threatened to kick her out on her ass permanently a few times, but had yet to make good on the threat. Yet.
No matter how bad Jade had fucked up, her Mom somehow found a way to forgive her and let her come back home. That’s what Moms did, right? Jade couldn’t find it in her mind to be afraid of the temporary consequences of her mother being upset with her choices. She’d worry about it when it became something to worry about.
“You don’t have to come if you think it’s a bad idea. I know how you feel about marking your perfect body.” She stuck out her tongue and waved her hands around in circles to indicate all of David’s massively sculpted body.
“If you’re going, I’m going.” He flicked the tip of her nose with his pointed fingertip, making her laugh and swat at him.
“Fine,” She couldn’t hide her giddiness from him. “I wanna drive your car though.” Jade bounced on her toes over to where David kept his keys and clutched them in her greedy little fingers.
“No.” He grabbed the TV remote and watched as The Jasey Jay Show revealed the results for the last couple. He was the father! David pointed at the TV and grinned. “See, I knew it was that dude.” Jade let her eyes take another spin around her head.
“It could’ve been either of them. It’s that chicks third time on the show.” David clicked off the TV and walked past her to empty both of their beer bottles down the kitchen sink and rinse the green bottles out before he chucked them into the recycling bin.
“We watch too much trash TV.” David leaned against the sink and watched her wave his keys in the air, dangling them between her pinched fingers. “It’s making you make bad choices.”
“Puh-lea-se,” She cupped the keys in her hands and held them against her heart. “You never let me drive it and we so do not watch it too much. I love that show and so do you.” She batted her thick eyelashes. “Please, it’s not even far. Just let me drive.”
“No, Jade.” He exhaled. “We’ve been drinking.” He reminded her and stepped into his tan work boots. “There’s no way in hell, I’d let you drive my car now. You wouldn’t want us to be on the
Jasey Jay Show for the “drinking and driving killed my best friend” episode, would you? We’ll walk there.”
“Uggghh, could you be any more of a drama queen?” Jade sighed and kicked the base board near the front door. “You’re the worst. I’m not even buzzed, D. It’ll be fine, besides, if we got on the show for drunk driving, killing you would be a small price to pay for me to get my Jasey Jay beads.” She giggled at her own joke but quickly stomped her foot again when his face stayed stern. “Even if we had to lie and just say you were dead, it would be like the best thing ever.” David gave her his back as he left the kitchen and she groaned demandingly again. “Just let me drive.”
He ignored her hissy fit while finding his black hoodie and pulling it over his shaved head. “Get your coat Jade, it’s chilly out.” He offered her a sweet smile over his shoulder as he shrugged his sweatshirt in place. The one smile that made a dimple appear on either side of his mouth and caused her heart to flutter just a little too fast and a little too slow all at the same time. She found his soft brown eyes with her green squinted ones and attempted to stare him down.
She was stubborn, that’s what her mom called it, but David was solid in every sense of the word. If he made a decision, he would stick it to. If he had a goal in mind, he’d smash it tenfold. If he said she wasn’t driving, then she wouldn’t be driving. In the seven years they had been friends he never wavered on a choice he’d made. Still, Jade pushed him at every turn, she thought maybe it was part of her charm.
“Please?” Her upper lip curled in as her lower lip pouted out.
“I think you left that pink Disney sweater here last week. It’s in the hall closet.” He yanked his hood up to cover his head and shoved his hands in the large pocket at the front of his hoodie. “Or we can stay here and finish watching that history documentary I’ve been wanting to see.”
“Ga-wd!” She drawled dramatically. “Fine! I’ll get the damn sweater.” David grinned and began walking to the front door. Just as he walked by Jade, he bent a little to speak softly near her ear.
“I thought you might.” He watched her hang his keys back on their rightful hook and then stomp over to the closet like a child instead of the adult she was. Inside the closet, just as he said, was her baby pink sweatshirt with Ariel swimming across the chest. Jade couldn’t remember where she left it and had torn apart her bedroom a few days before looking for the stupid thing. She shoved it over her head and pushed her arms out with more force than necessary. He pulled open the door and waited for her to exit before he followed her out.
The door shut with a loud swoosh and David patted his stomach to find the garage door remote was still in his sweatshirts pocket. He always locked the front door and came in through the garage when he got home so that he didn’t have to hear the jangling of his keys if he wasn’t driving.
“You’re a jerk.” She sang as she skipped down the walk way, obviously moving on from her tantrum as quickly as it had appeared.
“Would you have me any other way?” His eyebrow jumped up near where his hairline would be if he hadn’t kept his head shaved. The two of them had danced on the line between friendship and relationship for some time now and he was aching to push her cute ass off the line and into his bed, but he wanted Jade to make that choice. Waiting for her to do so was testing him in ways he never thought possible and he feared sooner rather than later he would have to take things into his own hands. Literally.
“Maybe,” She chuckled and began walking backward so that she could look at him. His massive shoulders and the hood hiding his head made him look like a dangerous stalker coming after her and the thought gave her a thrill she knew was wrong. His head dipped, hiding his eyes even more so in the shadows of his sweatshirt.
“How would you have me then, Jade?” He had that look on his face again. The one that made her panties damp and her stomach tighten. That look that he had been giving her more often as of late. The sun was almost set and its last rays of light were giving him a menacing glow. How would she react if he reached out and grabbed her right now? If he drug her to his bedroom and tossed her on the mattress? She didn’t know but she liked to think about those kinds of things happening.
It was one thing to think about and fantasize about him but it would be something totally different to act on those dreams. If she let him touch her in those ways and then he stopped, she feared her heart would shatter and she’d no longer be able to live life without him.
She looked down at her sneakers and let her left shoulder lift in a half shrug. She couldn’t let anything come between their friendship, she needed him too much. No matter how sexy or tempting he was, there was no way she could let one moment of passion ruin the one good thing in her life.
“Perhaps more giving?” She looked up then, at the shadow of her best friend as they walked down the sidewalk, her feet still pointing in the wrong direction.
“Oh, but I’m very giving.” The tone of his voice was turning husky and she felt chills race down her arms that had nothing to do with the crisp temperature in the air around them.
“Then you shoulda given me permission to drive your stupid car.”
He smirked. “Ouch,” his hand came out of his hoodie’s pocket to clutch over his heart. “Say what you will about me, Jade, but leave Shelby out of it.” She threw head back as she laughed hard.
“You and that fucking car.” She spit while he lightly laughed with her. No matter how much of a pain in the ass she was, her laughter always filled him with everything good. Sunshine, rainbows and fucking puppies. He would kill to keep her laughing and happy, which was a tough job to do with her constant mood swings and temper tantrums. “Is that why you haven’t had a girlfriend in forever? Too busy waxing Shelby?” She was teasing and he knew it but what she didn’t seem to know was that she was the reason he hadn’t been serious with anyone in a long time.
“Har har.” He fake laughed as he followed her. “Your humor never ceases to amaze me.”
Every woman David hung out with lacked something when compared to his Jade. He tried dating but each time it was a disaster. They were always too tall or too thin. Their eyes didn’t light up when he walked into the room like hers did or their laugh didn’t make his world tilt on its axis the way hers always had. Finally, he gave up the charade of dating because he only wanted to date her.
She was off limits though, until she willing gave herself to him, and something was keeping her from doing just that. Sure, David had entertained plenty of one night stands and late night booty calls, a man had to find a release somehow, didn’t he? But every chick he used was just a distraction until the one woman he really wanted to sink himself into, let him own her in every way he dreamed of. He ended up imaging all of those girls in his bed, and under his hands, were his Jade anyway but he was sick of the fantasy and wanted the real thing.
But could she handle the dark things that lived inside of him?
“So, what tattoo are you getting?” He shook off his feelings of need and tried to stay in the here and now. A task that was becoming more and more difficult each day.
“Your name on my ass.” She giggled and spun around to walk straight for a bit, which also gave him a delicious look at the very ass she spoke of. Her blue jeans were tight and low cut, always giving him a teasing peek at the two dimples above her ass crack. God, he wanted to tongue those sweet dimples and make her squirm under him.
“Your Mom is going to love that.” He spoke to her back while watching her ass sway with every step. His fingers curled against his palm inside of his pocket. What would her ass feel like in his large hands? He knew it would be easy to palm both of her cheeks in his hands when he grabbed her. Using her cheeks as handles to pull her smaller body against his. Her ass was plump and perfect. All of her was perfect in his eyes.
Jade had brown hair that fell just past her shoulders, not many people knew but she had natural red highlights in her hair that caught the sun’s rays when she was outside and made her head g
low like she was some sort of bratty angel. Her legs weren’t supermodel long but were just long enough that he could imagine her wrapping them around his hips when he finally took her. Her breasts were large and she had a bit of a tummy but he thought there wasn’t a more beautiful sight in this whole world than her.
Her skin was pale compared to his naturally tan skin and every inch of her was soft, unlike the hardness of his body that hours, days, and weeks in the gym had achieved. They were opposites in almost every way but he loved every agonizing minute in her company.
“Mmhmm.” She chided. “She’ll probably wanna look at my ass all the time just so she can drool over your name as much as she drools over you.” David jogged forward to catch up to Jade. When he did, he reached out and playfully pinched the soft spot on the back of her arm, just above her elbow. “Fuck-king A!” She yelped and pulled her arm away from him to rub her other hand over the sore spot. “Damn, you know I hate when you do that.” Her cheeks were already pink from the icy wind but now they bloomed with her feelings and reactions to his touch.
“Your mom doesn’t drool over me.” He smirked like a cat toying with a mouse. His arm reaching back toward the flesh she was trying to cover.
“She does so.” Jade argued and tried to throw a punch into David’s hard bicep. Her fist landed against his shoulder instead of where she had aimed. She hit like a two year old upset for not getting their way. “Ow.” She pouted as her knuckles cracked against his solid flesh and shook out her pained hand.
“I keep telling you not to punch me, you always end up hurting yourself instead of me.” He picked up the hand she was shaking out and lifted it to his mouth. He kissed her knuckles lightly and all the air in Jade’s lungs rushed out. She yanked her hand from him and walked a little faster.
