She nodded, though her mouth was arid, and traded it for the warm green shirt he offered.
Mac shook his head. “You sure know how to stop a party in mid-swing. Hey, Lassiter, am I paying you to start at Gabe’s chest?”
“Since when have you ever paid me, brother?” the band leader called back.
“Okay. What is Wendy paying you for, then?”
Lassiter started up “Hot Tamale Baby,” and Gabe’s bowed was all drama and flourish. “Put that on and follow me, cher. I’ll find something for you to wear that doesn’t have my sweat all over it.”
If his shirt reeked, her olfactory powers were dead. She nodded and did his bidding anyway, following his smooth strong back as the crowd parted to let them pass.
