The back window of the limousine rolled down. “Dad,” Nina called out. “They’re going to be waiting for us back home.”
“I’m coming,” he said, then turned back to Loretta. He put his hand on her forearm. “Thanks for coming, Loretta. I gotta run now. I’ll see you Monday.” He rushed back to the limousine and got in. It pulled away from the curb as soon as he shut the door.
“So, what do you think?”
Loretta jumped at the sound of Julius Monroe’s baritone coming over her shoulder. Her face was still flushed.
“What do I think about what?” she asked.
“Working for the Jump Squad. Yea or nay?”
The shiny black limousine was winding around the cemetery. She watched it until its directionals started blinking and it pulled through the tall iron gates, disappearing into the street.
“Well, Ms. Loretta. Kovacs?”
She stared at the opening in the gate where the limo had just been. Entrances and exits, she thought. Beginnings and endings. Gradually she started to nod.
“Yes. I do want the job.”
Beginnings are always better than endings, she thought.
“All right for you,” her new boss said, shaking his head. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Don’t worry,” she said with a grin. “I’ve been warned.”
