“You’re right, it’s time now to search for new goals,” he replied, smiling. “To tell the truth, I don’t know what I’m going to do over the coming months, but I know what I’m going to do in the next minute.”
He embraced her, bringing her towards him. She went tense in his arms, caught by surprise, but, a few seconds later, she relaxed and pressed herself more against his body, as she responded to the kiss gently, wishing for the moment to never end. At last they separated, and looked into each other’s eyes in silence for a few seconds.
“Well, thinking about it, I reckon I could spend the next few months doing just this. If you want to, of course.”
“Of course I do,” replied Natalia, laughing as she got up from the bench, on seeing that Carlos was moving towards her again, “but not right now.”
“We’re already starting to have problems. And why not now?”
“Because we’re in a park and we’re two officers of the law. It wouldn’t be a good thing for us to be arrested for causing a public scandal,” she offered him her hand, for him to get up. “Besides, we have things to do.”
He got up, feigning an expression of annoyance and followed her, taking her hand. She felt another stab of pain in her ankle and smiled, thinking about what a strange couple they must have made; he all covered with mud, and herself, hobbling along, and covered in scrapes and bruises. Carlos took her by the waist to bring her body closer to his.
“And what is this thing we have to do that’s so important?” he asked in her ear.
“Well, we need to go to headquarters to get my letter of resignation back off Aguirre,” she said, passing her arm around Carlos’s waist in return. “And we have a mobile phone to buy for Gus.”
