Shadow Waltz Page 20

by Amy Patricia Meade

“But what about our wedding plans? The whole town is counting on us.”

“We can take them up on their offer when we get back. Or do them one better by having the Reverend premiere his play at Kensington House.”

“And what about Mrs. Patterson?” she asked. “She’ll be terribly disappointed if we elope.”

“Will she?” He produced a magazine clipping from his pocket and presented it to Marjorie.

“‘The Benefits of Eloping,’” she read aloud. “‘Why More and More Couples Are Tying the Knot away from Home … Good Housekeeping Magazine, August 1, 1935.’”

A smile spread across Marjorie’s face. “Why, Mrs. Patterson!” She grabbed Creighton by his shirtfront, pulled him close and then gave him the most memorable kiss of his life.

“Is that a yes?” Creighton asked.

She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him again. “What do you think?”

“Why, Mrs. Ashcroft,” he declared as the ship pulled out of New York Harbor and into the calm azure depths of the Atlantic Ocean.
