  Introduction

Kyle, Jenny, and Paul are back in the second book in the spy school series. It’s been a few weeks since Kyle, Jenny, and Paul has started in Montgomery Junior Spy School and Kyle works hard every day in order to improve his abilities and to prove to everyone, mainly himself, that he is great fit to be a spy. When Kyle’s, Jenny’s, and Paul’s school is challenged by an all-girls school and Kyle was made leader of his group, he knew he had to work hard to live up to their expectations, but sometimes Kyle’s need to be the best gets the best of him and he begins to make mistakes. In “Rival School’s Challenge,” several new characters are introduced, skills are perfected, and lives are changed as the students’ of Montgomery Junior Spy School takes on this new challenge.

  Chapter One

“Get up!” A masculine voice said once the students’ blindfolds were removed when they had gotten to the school. Kyle stood up and stretched his arms out. Even though Kyle had been at Montgomery Junior Spy School for a few weeks, he still was not used to the adults’ almost cruel way of commanding them to do something. Jenny was struggling to get up out of her seat, probably because she had sat still for a long time. Paul helped her by pulling Jenny up.

“Come on, we don’t have all day.” The man said again just as harsh. The students filed into two lines on the bus without windows, because they were not allowed to see the location of the school due to precautions, and made their way off of the bus. One of the adults riding along with the students did a quick head count and nodded his head before he vanished within a blink of an eye.

“Hurry up and get to class,” the man who got them off of the bus said before he disappeared into thin air as well.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that.” Jenny said once she was sure the adults couldn’t hear them.

“It grows on you after a while,” Paul said and shrugged his shoulders. Paul has been in a spy school since he was in elementary school, so he was used to a lot of things that neither Kyle nor Jenny were used to. “After a while you’ll see it so much that it won’t impress you anymore.” Kyle shook his head.

“It’ll stop impressing me once I learn how to do it myself.” Jenny smiled at Kyle. Kyle was definitely a determined boy, which is why she stood by his side. She was hoping that some of Kyle’s strength would rub off on her.

“Hi!” Layla came running over to them then with a tall blond girl falling behind her.

“Oh! Hi Layla, how are you?” Jenny greeted the shorter dark blond haired girl with a smile on her face. Layla was the first female friend that she had made at the school.

“Oh I am well, I am well.” the new blond haired girl who was the same height as Jenny stood behind Layla. “This is my older sister Robyn,” Layla said happily. Robyn smiled at them then.

“Hello,” she said a little shyly.

“Robyn, these are my friends Jenny, Kyle, and Paul.” The three of them said hello to the newcomer. “She got into this school a little late because her letter was lost in the mail, but she’s here now!”

“Must you be so loud?” Robyn asked her sister with a slight blush on her face. When Layla was excited, the volume of her voice went up. Layla giggled and leaned in closer to Jenny, Kyle, and Paul.

“She’s a little shy so please be nice to her.” Jenny nodded her head. She knew how it felt to come to a new school after it had started already. She’d do whatever it took to make sure Robyn felt comfortable.

“Of course, leave it to me!” Jenny whispered back to Layla while Kyle and Paul stared at each other.

“We should head to class; the other students are just about inside the building.” Paul said looking towards their classmates retreating bodies.

“Oh!” Layla and Jenny said in unison. Kyle couldn’t help but to smile because their personalities were almost the same. Kyle looked at Robyn then and saw that she was smiling too.

“It would be a balance exercise today,” Kyle muttered under his breath. He could still remember the balance exercise on the very first day of school. He was the only student who couldn’t do it, which had made the class tease him. He’d gotten to the point that he could bend over backwards on his hands and stay in the air for a few moments before he fell.

“I’m sure you’ll do a lot better today,” Jenny whispered right next to them. Paul nodded his head in agreement.

“We’re here to help you,” Kyle thanked them and returned his attention back to the lesson. He was so happy that Paul and Jenny were willing to help him, but he knew that he couldn’t rely on them forever.

“Have you all been practicing?” Ms. Richardson asked as she looked everyone in the eyes as she spoked to the class.

  “Yes,” the students’ said together.

“Practicing is for babies!” Big Larry called out from the back of the room. Larry was a chubby and arrogant boy that felt he was better than everyone. Kyle didn’t like him that much because he was the main one who teased him in class.

“Practice makes perfect,” Ms. Richardson said glaring at Larry. Ms. Richardson wasn’t a mean woman like how Mrs. Griffin was. Kyle was glad that Mrs. Griffin was out on a business trip that day. He got tired of her yelling, “Silence!!” throughout the entire room. “Let me see you do a one-handed handstand on the edge of a chair without falling.” Ms. Richardson challenged Larry. He sucked his teeth and looked away from her watchful glance and that made her grin.

“You better stop talking like that in class, Larry!” a student called out at the front of the class. There wasn’t a day that went by that Larry didn’t say that he was the best at something. The funny thing about it was when he was asked to do something; he always got quiet, which led the other students to believe that he was just bluffing. He had some skills though. He was able to do an assignment meant for the class pretty well. He wasn’t the best, but he wasn’t the worse either.

“I wish he’d stop acting like that,” Kyle said.

“He’s always acted like that,” Paul said and looked at Kyle. “We live on the same street and he always tells the regular kids that he’s better than them because he’s going to an Ivy League school.” Paul shook his head. “Don’t pay too much attention to him because that’s all he wants, attention.”

“Alright class enough talking,” Ms. Richardson said looking towards Paul and Kyle, their mouths closed qui
ckly. “Stand up.” Everyone stood up and their chairs and desks disappeared under the ground. “You know the drill; let’s see how long you can balance before falling down.” He hated doing this exercise, but he knew that he needed to do it in order for him to become a great spy.

“Here goes nothing,” Kyle said and imagined the time that he was the first one to finish his endurance assignment. He remembered going through the cave in search of the crystal and he remembered how he had defeated the creature. Kyle remembered Mr. Dove’s encouraging words telling him that he’d be a great spy. Kyle’s feet raised straight into the air.

“Great job,” whispered Paul on the side of him. Kyle was able to do it now, thanks to Paul and Jenny, but he couldn’t keep it long. After 15 seconds, his feet hit the ground with a loud thud.

“You’re starting to get a hang of it.” Ms. Richardson said walking over to him. “You’ve remained in the air for five seconds longer than last week. Kyle still wasn’t impressed with himself. He looked around the room and all of the students were still balancing.

“I need to get better,” Kyle said. He would never get promoted if he went on like this.

“Practice makes perfect,” Ms. Richardson said with a reassuring smile. “Great job Layla!” Ms. Richardson called out to Layla once her feet touched the floor. “This is definitely your personal best.” Layla lasted a full minute before she landed on the ground. Kyle remembered Layla saying that she did yoga, so he expected her to do well at the exercise. Kyle looked over at Jenny and Paul and they were still in the air.

Kyle felt happy for his friends, but he was also a little jealous. Kyle looked over at Larry and as soon as Kyle’s eyes saw him, Larry’s feet hit the ground.

“Oh man!” Larry said straightening himself up.

“It’s not as easy as it looks is it?” Ms. Richardson said walking over to him. “But you did a great job. Two minutes is definitely a good time.” Kyle’s face flushed. He had to calm himself down some and remind himself that Larry had been in spy school since elementary school. He hated to admit this, but Larry should be better than Kyle by default, but he planned on surpassing everyone in the class.

“Woah,” Paul said as his feet hit the ground. He laughed and stretched out. “Two and a half minutes isn’t terrible. I’ll get to three minutes next time.” Paul placed his hands behind his neck and grinned. Soon after Paul had fell, the rest of the students began falling as well until there was only one person left standing. That person was Jenny.

“That was so much fun!” Jenny said when her feet finally touched the ground.

“Five minutes!” Ms. Richardson grinned. “That is impressive; you’re really good at this Jenny.” Jenny blushed and laughed.

“It’s because I have an amazing teacher!” Jenny said enthusiastically. Kyle watched them talk from the corner of his eyes. Jenny was the best at this, as usual, so he wasn’t surprised that she was the one who lasted the longest. Kyle needed to watch Jenny more often; maybe he’d learn her technique. Kyle shook his head. Jenny showed him how to do it dozens of times and his body mirrored hers.

“Good job,” Kyle said to Jenny once Ms. Richardson walked away.

“Thanks, you did well too Kyle. You’ve definitely gotten better.” Kyle didn’t understand why Jenny’s words stung as much as it did when she was praising him, but it did.

“Thank you,” Kyle said trying his best to manage a smile.

“You were great too Paul,” Jenny said flashing her signature grin at Paul and he beamed.

“Thanks, I’m glad I finally went over the two minute mark.” The class talked all around Kyle and he just wished the class would end already.

  Chapter Two

When lunch time came around, instead of Kyle sitting with Jenny and Paul under the tree in the back of the school, he worked on his balancing.

“Aren’t you hungry?” Paul called out with crumbs from his sandwich all over his face. Jenny had made little sandwiches today and shared it with Paul and Kyle.

“How can I be hungry when I’m failing miserably?” Kyle said as he landed on the ground hard after thirteen seconds. He’d worsened by two seconds!

“You’re not failing miserably!” Jenny called out. “Ms. Richardson said you’re doing better. Besides, you’re the best at endurance. You can’t expect to be the best at everything.” Jenny remembered the first day of class when they had to run around in a cave looking for crystals. She had fallen into a lake and gotten chased by a bear. She wasn’t the last person to return to Mr. Dove at the entrance of the cave, but she wasn’t one of the first people.

“Yeah, I’ve been in spy school longer than you and you even beat me in the cave. It shows that people are better than others in different things.” Paul was wrapped up tightly in a giant spider’s web in the cave. He could still feel the hairy spider’s leg touching his arm. Paul shivered. He had never experienced anything like that.

“I know,” Kyle said. He just didn’t want to make a fool out of himself. He just wanted everything to go the way that he wanted it to go, but he knew that was unrealistic thinking.

“You sure you don’t want anything to eat?” Jenny called out waving a sandwich in the air. Once Kyle’s feet hit the ground again, he looked at the sandwich that Jenny was waving. His stomach growled and his mouth watered looking at it.

“Yeah, I’ll take one” Kyle felt defeated that he had stopped his training to eat, but even the best spies needed a lunch break. “This is good,” Kyle said taking a bite into the sandwich. He didn’t realize how hungry he was until he had eaten the entire sandwich in under a minute.

“Wow,” Paul said amazed. “That took you no time at all to eat.” Paul said laughing. Kyle laughed as well. He could definitely beat someone in a speed food eating contest.

“What time is it?” Kyle asked picking up another sandwich and making his home in it. Paul looked at his watch.

“Almost time for Language class” Paul said. Kyle actually enjoyed their Foreign Language class. Spies needed to know a few languages in order for them to complete any mission in any country.

“Do you know which language we’ll be learning today?” Jenny asked excitedly. The few weeks that they’ve been at Montgomery Junior Spy School, they had a class for Japanese, Spanish, and Czech. They wondered what it’ll be today. Paul shrugged.

“I’m not sure; I didn’t have to take any language classes in elementary school.” Kyle was surprised that there was something that Paul hadn’t learned as of yet. “If I had to guess, I’d say maybe Italian.” Even though Paul didn’t have too much experience when it came to learning a foreign language, he did hit the nail on the head because they were learning Italian that day.

  ****

The class was hard! The students thought they were going to learn just the basis, but they were thrown into actually having a conversation in Italian. When the class ended, the students were happy to be done with it for that week.

“That did not go as expected.” Robyn said walking out of the classroom after Layla.

“I think that they thought we knew some Italian already,” Layla said and grabbed Jenny’s arm. “Did you understand any of that?” Layla asked with pleading eyes. Jenny shook her head.

“I’ve never spoken a word of Italian in my entire life!” Layla sighed and looked over to Kyle and Paul and they shook their heads no.

“I guess we should study a few words from today on because we don’t know when we’ll have that class again.” The five of them nodded their heads in agreement. They had another half hour break before it was time for their next class so Kyle decided that he wanted to train some more. He began making his way outside.

“Come on Kyle,” Paul groaned. “You’re going to train again?” Let’s go to the gym or to the computer lab. I’ll show you how to hack into computers.” Paul said quietly, but Kyle shook his head and grinned.

“Thanks for the offer, but I’d like to learn this as quickly as possible.”

  “What
s he talking about?” Layla whispered to Jenny.

“He’s been practicing his balancing during each break. I’m starting to think he’ll let his life pass him by if he doesn’t learn it quickly.”

“Oh, Robyn and I will help!” Layla called out to Kyle, but he was already at the back of the building on his hands.

“What’s his longest time?” Robyn asked.

“About fifteen seconds,” Paul said as he sat down on the grass and watched.

“I can only do it for thirty seconds,” Robyn said and blushed.

“Are you serious?” Kyle said after he landed onto the ground. Robyn nodded her head in embarrassment. Kyle couldn’t believe it; he thought that he was the only one who couldn’t make it to a minute.

“Don’t feel bad big sister,” Layla said. “You can still do it longer than Kyle,” Jenny and Paul shot Layla a dirty look and Kyle’s face heated up. “What?” Layla asked wondering what she had done wrong.
