  “You’re very positive.”

“I am.” She wrapped her arms around him. “I have the love of a good man to make it all worthwhile.”

“You have indeed, and I’m sorry about last Sunday. After you left I did a lot of thinking. I realized that what we have is very special.”

“It is special, Jed.” The connection they had with one another must be unique. No one else could feel what they had.

“Something like this only happens rarely, so we need to grab it with both hands.”

She giggled. “Well you certainly did that when you burst through my kitchen door.”

He chuckled. “I couldn’t help it. You sure know how to wind me up, honey.”

“I’ll remember that in future.” She stroked her hand along his cheek, her eyes focused on his. “Although it did have its compensations. Your caveman technique really turned me on.”

  “Me too.”

  “Thank you, Jed.”

  “What for?”

“For releasing me from the past. I’m finally the woman I always wanted to be.”

He kissed her lips. “You’re one passionate woman, Rebecca, and you’re all mine.”

  Epilogue

  Six months later

While Rebecca rinsed the dishes from their evening meal, she couldn’t help but smile as she watched Annie and her father enjoy some time together. They were both laughing as Jed chased her around the garden with a water pistol.

They’d certainly all come a long way in the last six months. Each of them had learned some big lessons. Annie, who’d had the most to lose, had finally accepted Rebecca. It had taken a lot of patience, cajoling, and lots of girlie nights in, but eventually the tension had diminished.

When Annie started playing on her swing, Jed strolled back inside the ranch house. He came up behind her and wrapped his arms possessively around her waist. Rebecca closed her eyes, melting back into his embrace. She couldn’t imagine a day without him now.

“Mmm, you smell good.” He nuzzled her neck with tiny kisses. “Are you happy?”

“I am. Watching you both together makes me happy, Jed, especially as Annie seems so contented.”

He turned her around and pressed her back against the sink. “To my way of thinking, we’ve all gained. Annie’s gained a mother figure. You’ve gained—”

“A wonderful husband and stepdaughter. I hadn’t thought of it like that, Jed.” She touched his nose playfully. “So that means you’ve gained a wonderful wife.”

He kissed her lips and smiled at her. “No, Rebecca, not just a wonderful wife. I’ve found the sexiest woman alive.” He kissed her possessively. “And she’s all mine.”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

At present Jan Bowles lives with her husband in an old farmhouse in Lincolnshire, England, UK.

She would like to think that she’s a free spirit, having lived in various parts of the UK and Europe. When she was younger, she lived in Los Angeles and travelled by car across the entire length of Route 66 to Chicago and then finally linked the journey to New York. It was an experience that Jan has never forgotten.

Jan has an enquiring mind and will often muse about events having an everlasting effect on the human psyche. There is always a reason why people act the way they do. You just have to look below the surface. She hopes to bring these ideas to her writing.

When she’s not writing, Jan likes to paint large landscapes and sweeping vistas. She loves walking, and there’s nothing more she’d rather do than stand on the top of a hill with the wind blowing through her hair, and, yep, if it’s raining, that’s all the better. Jan says there’s nothing like nature to make one feel truly alive.
