"Where are we going, Will?" Paige giggled as Will kept a tight grip on her hand. He pulled her along behind him through the long grass. The scent of summer heavy in the air. This was where Paige had always been at her happiest. Out here in the fields running wild with Will...
He turned back and grinned at her. His hair flopping boyishly over one eye as his smile lit up his tan face. Paige could feel a smile on her own face. It tingled in the curve of her lips. Part of her wondered if today was the day she would have her first kiss... Would Will actually kiss her? Or were they little more than best friends.
"Nearly there... You're going to love it!" He announced, his smile growing even wider.
Paige glanced around at her surroundings as they ran. She didn't remember coming here... It must have been some place that Will discovered whilst out on his own... A thought struck her. Tomorrow was her thirteenth birthday. She knew her parents would get her something nice but as far as Paige was concerned the only present she was interested in was the one Will would give her.
Paige tried to slow down for a moment. Her legs hurt from constantly trying to jump the thick clumps of grass that filled the field they ran through. Her chest ached and she was desperate to catch her breath.
Will released her hand and kept on running. He was tall and lanky but she could see in his features the promise of handsome masculinity. As far as Paige was concerned she couldn't wait to watch him grow up. Couldn't wait to see him become a man and what type of man he would be.
He disappeared into a dense patch of trees and Paige was alone in the wide open field. She could hear birds calling in the distance as they flew back and forth to their nests. But other than that there was no other sound. There was no sound of life anywhere. It was as if they were the only people left on earth.
Paige shivered and wrapped her arms around her body as she started forward once more. Not being able to see Will, worried her a little. What if he had gone too far ahead and she couldn't catch up to him? What if she couldn't find him and she became lost?
Panic swirled in her mind, and it reminded her of another time... Another time when she was afraid she wouldn't see Will again. Something niggled in the back of Paige's mind. It was something important but she just couldn't seem to grasp a hold of it.
Will poked his head out of the tree line, his grin wide and welcoming. Paige instantly relaxed, all thoughts of panic was gone, eliminated from her mind with the smile of the boy in front of her.
"Come on, slow coach! We don't have all day!" He called to her, waving with his arm.
Paige smiled and started to run once more. Her white dress with the blue print flowers on it fluttered in the wind as she chased after him. Reaching the tree line she ducked beneath the low lying branches and followed Will into the gloom beyond.
The sound of water and splashing caught her ear and she skipped forward. Will grasped her hand once more and lifted his fingers to his lips in a shushing motion. Paige followed him to the edge of what looked to be a large lake. The water was almost still except for the large ripples that danced outwards from the centre.
Paige sucked in a deep breath and stared in wonder at the large swans swimming in the centre. Some of them were diving beneath the surface, their graceful necks arching down and ducking below the surface.
Paige couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to do that. To be stunning and graceful and be able to fly and swim...
Paige couldn't swim. She was terrified of the water and she wasn't sure why. Her parents had tried on several occasions to tempt her into the swimming pool but she just couldn't. There was something powerful in water and it frightened Paige.
She stepped closer to the edge and stared down at the sheer drop into the water. Her heart thumped a little faster in her chest as she imagined what it would be like to drop down into the murky depths. If she were a swan she wouldn't be afraid of the water... It would be her home and fear had no place in a home.
Will's hand tightened on hers when she took another step closer to the edge. Some dirt skittered down the mucky embankment making her gasp and step away from the edge.
The birds had paused their diving and general calm swimming in order to watch the two young teens on the ledge above them. Their dark eyes taking in everything. Paige turned back to Will and smiled.
"How did you find this place? It's so beautiful." She whispered, afraid that if she spoke in her normal tone that she would frighten the birds away.
Will shrugged and gazed out over the water and into the distance. "I just sort of happened upon it... Don't know how. I guess it was when I was out exploring... Paige there is something I have to tell you..."
The sound of a twig snapping had both Paige and Will spinning around to see what was behind them. Paige's younger brother came whooping out of the trees with a few of his friends in tow.
One of the guys bumped into Paige as he ran past her knocking her closer to the edge of the ledge. She let out a small squeal of surprise but was relieved when she didn't topple over the edge.
Will's hand had slipped from hers and as she turned to scold her brother and his friends for frightening away the swans the earth beneath Paige's feet shifted. It crumbled, breaking away from the main part of the ledge, sending her tumbling down into the murky cold waters below.
Paige never made a sound as she fell. It didn't make sense but the sound simply wouldn't leave her throat such was her fear of the water. She hit the surface back first and it was like getting slammed into a cold brick wall. The water immediately soaked through her clothes to her skin. It ran up her nose and poured into her open mouth making her gag and choke.
She tried to kick towards the surface. It seemed like the most logical thing to do, but her arms and legs felt like lead weights. Her body was being dragged downwards, deeper into the murky depths and there was nothing she could do about. Blind panic had her gulping in mouthfuls of water.
The feel of two strong arms around her waist made her kick out. She couldn't see who it was but there was something very comforting and familiar about the body holding hers.
They broke the surface of the water together, Paige's eyes stung with water and her lungs ached. She coughed and choked in an attempt to clear her airways of all the water she had drank down. He pulled her towards a low part of the embankment and lifted her up onto the side. Paige's fingers dug into the soft dirt as she pulled her body up and collapsed on the side.
She
lay there, her eyes closed the warmth from the sun beating down on her, slowly drying her out.
"Paige?" Will's voice broke through her thoughts and she slowly opened her eyes.
He sat beside her, dripping wet, his hair sparkling in the afternoon sun. His face was creased with worry but Paige could feel a smile splitting her own serious expression.
"You saved me!" She said, as she sat up. Bits of weeds stuck to her dress and it was no longer the pristine white it had been before. Her mother was going to kill her.
Will shrugged and turned away, a sudden blush creeping up and over his cheeks. "Yeah, well I know you can't swim... If I hadn't brought you here, you'd be safe and dry..."
Paige knotted her fingers in the soaking wet fabric of her dress. "If I could swim would you have dived in after me?"
"Yes..." Will's answer was short and he refused to look Paige in the eyes. But it was enough, it told her what she needed to know.
They may have been little more than children but Paige knew she would love him forever. It wasn't something that would ever go away. What they had was special... It would last a lifetime...
She snuck her hand into his and squeezed his fingers softly.
"I love you, Will."
He turned to face her, his cheeks still burning with colour. "I know... I love you too..." His cheeks darkened further and he bounded to his feet suddenly, pulling Paige with him.
"Come on, we have tons more to do..." He took off at a rapid pace. Paige watched him go for a few moments. Something weighed heavy on her mind but once more she had no idea what it was.
Pain lanced through her stomach, doubling her over and making her cry out. Paige shut her eyes, squeezing them tight as she listened to the sound of footsteps shuffling around on the concrete floor around her.
"Bitch, I said wake up! We don't have all day!" A gruff voice punctuated their words by grabbing Paige by the collar and dragging her upright.
She opened her eyes as a large palm swiped into her vision and connected with her cheek with a resounding slap. The sound rang out in the almost empty room and Paige cried out. She tried to lift her hands to defend herself but her hands were still shackled.
Opening her eyes she blinked several times. Her face stung where his hand had hit her and her stomach ached as though someone had kicked her. Staring at the man before her, Paige was almost certain that he had kicked her.
"Your master wants you prepped for his attentions."
The man that Paige recognised as Terrence reached past her and unclipped her shackles from the wall. He tugged her onto her feet and stared at her. His eyes drinking in the sight of her dishevelled appearance.
His gaze lingered on the ripped bodice and before Paige knew it he had lifted his hand to the fabric in an attempt to pull it further open. Paige jerked back out of his grip and stared defiantly at him.
He chuckled and moved after her. "Don't be coy with me. When Chris is finished with you... You and I will be spending quite a bit of time together... There's no reason we can't start now." His hand played along the edges of ripped fabric as he pressed his face in against Paige's neck.
She tried to cry out but his other hand released the shackles and went to cover her mouth.
"Sssh sweetness, don't ruin our fun by making noise."
Paige took her opportunity and lifted her knee, catching him squarely in the nuts. She clasped her hands in front of her in the shape of a fist and as his knees buckled and he collapsed forwards she thrust the edge of the metal shackles up into his face.
Terrence collapsed backwards, sprawling out on the ground as blood exploded from his nose in a red spray. He groaned and screamed in pain and Paige tried to move quickly around him. But another man had already appeared in the doorway blocking her exit.
Paige had never believed that she would be so relieved to see him. Or that she even could be relieved by his presence but in that instance with Terrence rolling around on the floor behind her she was.
Aidan watched her, his eyes dark and unreadable. His arms were crossed over his chest and as Paige stumbled towards him he held out his arms and caught her as she collapsed into them.
Tears choked up the back of her throat as she stared up into his face in gratitude. He was here to save her. She would be safe and back at the condo in no time... She would see Will again. The thought of seeing Will filled Paige with hope and she stood a little straighter. All she wanted was to feel his arms wrapped tight around her. His lips on hers as he kissed her.
"How did you find me?" She said as Aidan moved her out of the room and into the hall. "Where's Will?"
Aidan's expression hardened as he looked Paige over, his gaze taking in the rip in her dress and the bruising on her face. He took her hand in his and turned her arm over until he could examine the stitches that covered her wound. Several of them had split and the blood had long since dried onto Paige's arm.
She was in such shock about the entire situation that she hadn't even noticed the pain in her arm until Aidan had drawn attention to it. But it was still far less important than her urge to get out of there.
"How are we going to get out? I don't think they'll let me just walk out the door..."
Aidan still hadn't answered and Paige could feel herself growing more and confused. How had he gotten in? And how had he happened upon her so conveniently?
"Have they shown you where they keep the other girls yet?" Aidan whispered, his grip tightening on her arm.
"No, I haven't seen anyone else except Chris and his men... And now you..."
Aidan let out a frustrated sigh. "We need more. It's not enough. We need to actually know what happens here..."
He released his hold on her arm and started off down the hall. Paige tried to follow him but her legs were still very weak. Her head was spinning and she felt nauseous.
"Aidan, don't leave me here!" She called after him.
He turned and looked back at her. She could practically see the confusion of emotions that flitted across his face. But once again his expression grew hard. "I have to... You don't have all the information we need... You need to let them do what they normally do so you can figure it out..."
He disappeared around a corner, leaving Paige alone in the empty corridor. She tried to follow him, her legs constantly threatening to buckle beneath her as she pushed herself along the edge of the wall.
She reached the end of the corridor and stared down the empty corridor that Aidan had disappeared down. He was gone. He was gone and he had left her behind. Left her with the monsters that had taken her and all so he could have more proof for his stupid case...
Paige let out a frustrated sob and covered her mouth with her hand. She couldn't afford to make a sound. She didn't want to be discovered so soon after escaping. All she needed to do was find a way out and then everything would be alright. She would get back to Will and she would be fine.
She made her way down the dark hallway, her fingers feeling along the wall for any change in its surface. The corridor just seemed to go on and on, there didn't even seem to be any doors.
"She escaped, I don't know where she went. She was talking to someone in the hall..."
The sound of Terrence's voice drifted to Paige as she crouched in the hall. There was nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide and he was coming for her.
Paige could hear a heavy set of footsteps slowly making their way in her direction. She moved faster down the hall, her hands groping and feeling for any way out. Paige didn't care where it took her, all she knew in that moment of fear and panic was that she couldn't go back and let Terrence touch her again.
She started to run, her legs unsteady, barely held her upright but still she careened down the hall. Reaching the end she ran straight into a set of exit doors. Pushing them open she didn't stop to take in her surroundings instead she attempted to run straight through the room. Cries of surprise and shock met her ears and Paige hesitated for a moment. There was other women in the room.
Beautiful wom
en cowered in corners, their hands attempting to cover their nudity. Paige's heart flipped in compassion. What Chris had done to them was so wrong. Paige didn't even have words to describe how awful the situation was.
A group of men dashed into the room behind her. Their hands locking around her arms and pushing her to the floor on her knees.
Paige cried out, the pain ripping through her as they roughly manhandled her. Terrence's shoes came into view in front of her. Paige lifted her face and stared up at him. One of the men holding her grabbed her hair and jerked her head back even further making any type of movement impossible.
Terrence's face was covered in blood and Paige couldn't help but smile. He deserved it and given half an opportunity Paige would do it to him all over again.
He pressed a tissue against his nose in an attempt to stem the bleeding but the look in his eyes was one of pure hatred.
"You need to be taught a lesson... And if Christopher allows it I will be only too happy to meet out a suitable punishment..."
"No you won't... The only one dishing out punishment here is me..." Chris's voice cut through Terrence's tirade.
The other man turned and shot Christopher an apologetic look. "Sir, I didn't mean to presume but it's just... Well look at what she had done to me... I'm sure my nose is broken..."
Chris came into view and Paige could see that he was grinning. "Well you know she's spirited..." Chris stepped up beside her and trailed his fingers down the side of her cheek. "I'm going to enjoy breaking you." He whispered the words so only Paige could hear it.
She struggled in the grip of the men who held her but it was pointless. They were too strong and the hold they had on her was impossible to escape from.
Chris drew back, his expression changing as he turned back to Terrence. "Are these girls ready for later?"
Terrence nodded and gestured to some of the girls cowering in the corners. "Yes, all the new ones have been washed and prepped..."
