“No worries, I will just text my man and they will pick up everything for it.”
Me: Add another to the guest list. We made a new friend.
Trevor: This friend better be female.
Me: I think she is, but I haven’t asked.
Trevor: You think you’re so funny, don’t you?
Me: Just make sure that there is stuff to make daiquiris.
Trevor: Are you trying to boss me around woman?
Me: Of course ;)
Trevor: You will pay for that later. Much later.
Me: Looking forward to it.
“Okay they are getting stuff for us so let’s pick up the rest of supper and head out!”
An hour later we are all heading out of the store and we find out that our new friend’s name is Claire. She follows us in her vehicle. Once we pull up, I see the cars and trucks of the men outside, so I know that they are already home. We grab the bags and head inside.
I can hear them in the backyard arguing like a bunch of kids.
“Holy shit, that’s a lot of guys. I thought you said family,” she looks at us with a panic in her eyes.
“We did. This is our family. Family is what you make it, honey. Some of us are related and some of us aren’t. You don’t need to be blood to be family.” I put an arm around her shoulders and start walking towards the back door.
She’s trying to dig her feet into the ground, but she is really not that strong. I let out a laugh at her attempts.
“Holy shit, do you guys live with the cast of Magic Mike or something?” Claire says.
We all start laughing. “They’re just family. No dancers here.”
We get outside and once the door is open, Claire stops her attempts to escape.
“Guys, this is Claire. It’s her birthday and we found her in the bakery aisle buying herself a cake. Claire, that’s Trevor, Cole, Liam, Sam, Derek, Kyle, Noah, and Luke.” They all either say hello or nod at her. Sam is staring at her like she’s a creature from another planet.
“Hi,” she says in a small voice. I look at her and notice the blush on her cheeks.
I let go of her shoulder, walk over to Trevor, and give him a kiss.
“Hey, baby”
“Mmmm. Hi.”
“How you ladies managed to pick up a quiet one, I will never know,” he says.
I shrug. “I think she will fit in just fine.”
I stand there and look at my family. If you had told me months ago that I would be standing here in my childhood home with ten new members added to my family and that I was in love and happy, I wouldn’t have believed you. I would have thought you were crazy to think that I could be this happy, to be this in love, to feel this peace.
Everyone in this yard means something to me. I wouldn’t trade any of them for anything.
I feel Trevor’s lips by my ear. “What are you thinking about so hard, baby?”
“Nothing. I’m just happy. I never thought I would be this happy.”
“Me too, my sweet Paige.” He kisses the side of my head.
I will never get tired of hearing that. My Sweet Paige.
