Finally the bonfire died down. All that was left were a few pieces of wood. Owen came out and kicked at a few to cool the embers and spread the ashes with his boot.
“Look at this,” he said, kicking at a large piece from the center of the bonfire and shining a large flashlight on it.
Sylvia gasped when she saw it. It was the wooden mask that she had found months ago after Gran’s funeral. Battered by wind, water, weather and fire, its rough edges had been worn smooth. Sylvia picked it up. She knew it was a last gift from the Green Man.
And she knew he would return. Owen took her hand and they walked together back towards Marian’s house with the stars singing around them.
