“Is that true, woman? Did you love the siren?”
I was almost afraid to answer him, but it felt like it would be worse to ignore him. Besides, our love wasn’t past tense.
“I do love him.”
“Then he will die,” Saiza said, a smile flitting across his face.
I had done very well up to that point controlling my emotions, but when he said that, I buried my face in my hands. My wobbly legs gave out and resigned me to the cold, damp ground.
“You need rest,” Rami replied.
“I need to go home please,” I said, whimpering as my tears splashed against the handkerchief still clutched in my palm.
His hand lowered into my field of vision.
“I will take you.”
I slid my hand into his so he could bring me to my feet. When I rose, we were alone in the cave. His fingers began to curl loosely around mine, but before they could get comfortable, I jerked my hand away.
I don’t know why I imagined he would return me to my front door like we’d been on a date. I guess I needed to believe that to keep going.
So I followed him deeper and deeper into a dark cave, and it would be a long time before I came out the other side.
