The receptionist was sitting in the chair next to William. She said, “And for underestimating Melody Song.”
“Yes, Ms. Edgington.” Waters nodded. “That was also a mistake. She’s an impressive woman. I won’t underestimate her the next time I try to take the cove.”
William looked incredulous. “You’re still going to try to seize Craving Cove?”
Waters turned to William. “Be gone, Goat. We have no more business and I don’t want that loser stink you have wafting off you infecting my nose any further. Go. Or security will throw you out.”
William stood mute for a moment. Then he quietly turned, and left the office.
Once he was gone, Waters said, “Bet he wishes he hadn’t had those divorce papers on him. If she hadn’t signed them then she’d be liable for half the losses he incurred.”
The receptionist said, “He does have a point about Craving Cove, though. What’s so vital about that town? I checked the ecology report, and there’s no oil there.”
“Never you mind.” Waters stared out the window once more. The cove, and its treasures… He’d have them. One day. And all the clever women in the world wouldn’t stop him from taking his revenge.

The next week had been a busy one for the town of Craving Cove. Loans had been paid back. Debts had been quashed. And building had begun on Rick’s, which would now be called Melody’s. She and Knox had bought the land with the treasure from the Grouse, and they’d be partners, maybe married one day, but that was a long ways off. Melody Song stood on her porch, looking out over the ocean, just happy to be… well, happy.
“Thinking good thoughts?” It was Knox. He was wearing the same black t-shirt and jeans she’d seen him in the day she returned to Craving Cove. He stood behind her, and wrapped his arms around her. They were like tree trunks.
She traced the inky lines on his forearm. “I’m thinking the best thoughts. Now get upstairs and lose the pants. I’ll be up in a minute.”
“Yes, captain.” Knox kissed her cheek and did as commanded.
Melody sighed. And looked out over the ocean. The sun was just setting, sending up the orange and purples that, along with the crashing waves of the beach, Craving Cove was known for. But even though it was the end of the day, it felt like the beginning. The sun, it was bright and strong. Perfect and powerful. It looked like it was able to do almost anything.
And for the first time in forever, Melody Song knew exactly how it felt.
