He looked at me tenderly, understanding. “It’s not foolish and silly to live your life,” he said. “That’s what I’d want.”
“But it’s not what I want,” I said. “If you’re going to be on a mission, I want the right to at least worry over you. Give me that at least. I know I can’t always know where you’re going or know what you’re doing but at least let me worry.”
He looked at me with an expression of stunned amazement before nodding slowly. “Alright,” he said, slowly understanding my request. “Alright.”
“You can say something like, ‘I’m going shopping,’ whenever you’re about to leave for a mission,” I said, coming up with the idea on the spot. “That way you can say it over the phone or text it to me without problem. And it’ll never be confused with something you’d actually say on a normal basis. Unless, of course, you’re secretly a shopaholic.”
I smiled slowly.
Cooper huffed a laugh as he shook his head. “No, of all the things I am, a shopaholic is not one of them.” He leaned forward and kissed my forehead. “Alright, I will let you know…when I go shopping.” He smiled down at me before taking my lips. “Do you know how unbelievably amazing you are? How brave and incredible you are?”
I couldn’t help but smile. Those were the exact thoughts I was having about him, after all.
“And how lucky I am to have found you?” he said, before taking my lips again. I opened my mouth, relishing his taste. I reveled as his tongue plunged into me, taking my literal breath away.
I wrapped my arm around him, pulling him close to me. He rested his forearms around my head, leaning over me. Those dark eyes keeping me just as pinned as his body was.
“I love you,” he said.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, glad, thrilled, over the moon to have this dangerous, powerful, loving, brave, daring man in my life.
“I love you too,” I whispered just before he made my mouth too busy to talk.
With slow, tender movements, we undressed each other, moving as if we were in some kind of synchronized dance. We ran our hands over each other’s naked flesh, enjoying the immediacy of each other, the realness.
Cooper lowered his head to my breasts, rubbing his scratchy stubble against the sensitive skin. I gasped as his mouth closed in around my nipple, his teeth scraping against the soft flesh.
“Oh god!” I gasped, my nails running across his back as my body melted in pleasure.
He turned his head towards my other breast and as he gave it the same delicious torture, his hand crept lower till it met the wetness that grew between my legs.
“Oh my god,” I breathed as his fingers stroked down my pussy in one hard thrust. Nerve endings fired like the Fourth of July and my body exploded in ecstasy.
“I love hearing you gasp like that,” Cooper murmured against my breast. “Do it again.”
He ran his fingers hard down my sensitive folds and I couldn’t help but gasp again.
He chuckled lowly as his lips sucked my nipple. “Just like that, sweetheart,” he murmured.
“Don't…Don’t tease me,” I begged breathlessly. “I want to feel you. In me. Now.”
Cooper rose up above me. He smiled, his eyes dark with a fiery passion that made my heart thud bruisingly against my ribs. “Whatever you say, boss,” he teased as he thrust his hard cock in its entirety into me.
My eyes widened and my back arched as my pussy was stretched to its capacity. All the air in my lungs seemed to evaporate as his cock buried itself deep into my warmth.
Cooper’s eyes closed and he groaned, letting his cock rest within me.
But before the crackle of pleasure could subside, Cooper withdrew from me almost completely. Then he thrust back in hard, jerking me forward, making me grunt in unending pleasure.
His cock plunged into me over and over again, thrusting hard and rough. Cooper’s hands wound their way through my hair, fisting it. He jerked my head back so he could look down at me.
Roughly taking my lips, he plunged into me again and again, deeper and deeper. My legs wrapped themselves around his hips, opening myself up, allowing me to take him even deeper still.
“Oh, sweetheart, you feel so good,” he murmured against my cheek. “So goddamn good.”
Heat churned within me. There was an explosion inside me that was aching to go off and Cooper had the match to light the flame.
Leaning to one side, Cooper angled himself differently, letting his cock hit a new spot within me. I gasped and arched, as new nerve endings came alive.
My body shook as my pleasure senses became overwhelmed. I held onto his broad shoulders. “Oh god, oh god,” I whispered, feeling the rocketing desire readying to explode within me.
“Take it, baby,” he said. “Take it and let it go. Let it all go.”
And his words were all I needed. With abandon, I let my body loose, letting pleasure and desire and ecstasy suffuse every corner of me. My back arched, my head thrown back, I gave a silent scream as brilliant pleasure snapped through me, leaving me a quaking shell that felt the aftermath in small tremors.
And through it all, Cooper held me close, thrusting into me relentlessly. His cock reaching into the deepest folds of me.
I held onto him weakly, completely spent and utterly joined.
My body could do nothing now except hold on as Cooper rode me hard and deep towards his own crashing pleasure.
His rhythm quickened, I felt his breathing grow rapid. And then just as suddenly as my own release, he roared and slammed into me, making me come again in one quick sudden surprise burst.
Our voices mingled together as we found our release in each other.
Cooper rolled over to his side, holding me with him, our bodies still joined together.
I snuggled into his arms as he tucked me in close to him, our limbs intertwined together. I breathed deeply, inhaling his scent, loving his touch.
“So I guess I’ll see you in six weeks,” I murmured sleepily.
His chest rumbled as he laughed.
“Definitely,” he said, holding me closer.
“And you’re calling the minute you land.”
“The minute I land,” he promised.
He pressed a kiss onto my forehead as we both sighed, our bodies finally feeling like we had fully reunited after the rescue.
“Good,” I said, before falling asleep in the arms of the man I loved.
Epilogue
Emilia
“That couldn’t have been another reporter, could it?” Margie asked, grinning.
I winked at her as I leaned against the nurse’s station. “Maybe.”
“Wow, I can’t believe they’re still interested in reporting on our trip to Qunar,” Margie said, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Oh what’s not to believe?” Doc Jones said, resting his back against the station, his arms crossed. “A pretty young doctor volunteers in a war torn nation, survives an earthquake, saves dozens of children from measles. Why wouldn’t reporters keep coming for that?”
I batted my eyes flirtatiously at Doc Jones. “Aww,” I said. “You think I’m a pretty young doctor?”
Doc Jones rolled his eyes and Margie and I laughed.
Tammy suddenly popped up near my elbow, out of breath and holding onto a large envelope.
“Look! It’s from Mr. Carew!” she said.
She thrust the package at us and we quickly ripped it open. Inside was a stack of handmade cards with crayon drawings. On top of the stack was a neat little note from Children First International:
These are thank you notes from the children. They wanted to thank their heroes who saved their lives and helped them find new and safer ones.
“Oh my god,” Margie whispered as she picked up a card.
Doc Jones, normally too experienced and calloused to be moved by anything, smiled faintly as he picked up a few cards. “Those little rascals,” he murmured.
Before we left Qunar, we had informed Mr. Carew of the children we
had in our care. Those from town and those who had been destined for trafficking. He had immediately called around to find any kind of resources available to help them.
And as luck would have it, a new charity organization was coming into Qunar to help lost and displaced children from the refugee crisis. Once Mr. Carew explained to the charity about the children, they were more than happy to take them on, even if not all of them were strictly refugees.
We had been notified once we were back in L.A. that the kids had been moved out of Qunar and into another safer neighboring country where they were all being fostered.
I found a card at the bottom of the stack. There was a smiling sun drawn on the cover with a little bit more skill and care than the rest. I opened it and inside was a carefully drawn note that spoke of someone writing in a language that was not their own.
Thank you, doctor.
Sora
Tears prickled against my lashes.
She had been near death but the girl had fought with everything she had. She had been determined to live, no matter what. And I was glad to know that now she had a real chance at a life.
I folded the card and put it inside my coat pocket, wanting to keep this particular one especially.
“We should maybe pin them up somewhere,” Tammy suggested. “They’d be a good reminder for us.”
Margie nodded smiling. “I think that’s a great idea.”
I caught Doc Jones watching me.
“What?”
“You’re smiling,” he said, a slow smile growing on his own lips.
“So?” I said defensively but unable to stop smiling.
“Well, it just seems like ever since you’ve been seeing your soldier, you’ve been doing a lot of that,” he said. Doc grinned. “Revenge is sweet, isn’t it?”
I gave him a sardonic look. “That is not why I smile. Revenge is the furthest thing from my mind. I’m too busy being happy.”
Doc snorted. “Exactly. You being happy is the best revenge,” he said.
I shook my head, laughing. You could never win against Doc Jones. “I suppose you’re right,” I said.
“Of course I am,” Doc Jones said with a sniff, making me laugh again.
Once I had returned from Qunar, I had become something of a media sensation in our small corner of the medical world. And I guess that made it not so surprising when Edward suddenly took a renewed interest in me.
Apparently, once a huge pharmaceutical company offered Catarina a prized job in their London laboratories, she had broken off the engagement and had left Edward without a backward glance.
It was towards the end of a shift that Edward had approached me.
“I saw your article in the L.A. Times,” he started. “You looked good.”
I gave him a small smile. “Well, they had a good photographer,” I deflected.
“Well, it doesn’t take much to make a natural beauty shine,” he said, his eyes becoming that droopy half lidded look whenever he was trying to flirt with someone.
I held back a laugh. “If you say so,” I said, grabbing my finished files and bringing them to the nurse’s station.
“I was wondering,” Edward started, “now that you’re back, if you’d want to maybe go grab—”
But I wasn’t listening. Instead I saw a tall body walk into the ER with a face too wonderful to be real.
“Cooper!” I cried and rushed past Edward to throw myself into Cooper’s arms.
He immediately grabbed me, whirling me around. He smelled so good and his arms around me felt so right.
“That plane couldn’t have landed any faster, Em,” he said, breathing into my hair, taking in my scent just as I was taking in his.
I pulled away a little and looked at him. We both had the dopiest grins on our faces. “I agree,” I said. “You should file a complaint.”
Cooper took my lips in a demanding kiss before breaking away and saying, “You’re right. Maybe I should.” And with that, carried me out of the hospital to give me a proper hello at home.
And that had been the end of Edward’s advances.
“Are you coming out with us tonight?” Margie asked, interrupting my thoughts. “Cooper is always welcomed to join, of course.”
I nodded. “Yeah, I think so,” I said. Tonight, for the first time in a long time, everyone was going back to Reggie’s. And I felt a little thrill of anticipation at the idea of going back to the place where it all started with Cooper. “I just want to double check with him so that he knows to meet me here.”
“Why don’t you—” Tammy started but I held up a hand, feeling something buzz on me.
Immediately, I checked my pager but there was no code.
Then I reached into my pocket and felt my phone vibrating. It was Cooper.
“Hold on, it’s him,” I said, turning away to take the call.
“Oooooooooooooh!” the group chanted behind me like middle schoolers.
And I blushed like a middle schooler as I ran off to find a secluded corner.
“Hey, babe,” I said answering the phone, a smile already on my lips.
“Hey, sweetheart,” he said. I loved the way his voice sounded whenever he used that endearment. It made my heart skip a beat.
“So, are you coming tonight? We’re all going to Reggie’s after this shift so if you—”
“Em,” Cooper interrupted, “I’m going shopping.”
Whatever words I was about to speak died in my throat. I held the phone tightly against my ear, not wanting to miss a word.
“Oh,” I said carefully. “When do you leave?”
“Tonight,” he said. “In a few hours.”
I nodded. “Okay, then I’m coming home after my shift,” I said firmly.
“Em, I don’t want you to give up a night of fun just because I’m—”
“No,” I said. “I’m not giving up anything. We can all go to Reggie’s next week. But tonight, I want to spend some time with you.”
A beat passed between us. “Do you know when you’ll be back?”
“I can’t say for sure. It’ll probably be about five weeks,” he said.
I let out a slow breath, letting resolve strengthen my voice. “Okay then,” I said, reminding my brain and heart that this is perfectly normal. For us. “I guess this means I get to pick what’s for dinner tonight, right?”
Cooper gave a soft chuckle. “Right,” he said, his voice full of appreciation for my determination for normalcy. “But next time, the pick is mine.”
I smiled into the phone. “Then you better hurry back for that pick,” I said softly.
I could almost see his smile in my mind. That broad smile across that squared and rugged jaw. “I will,” he promised. “I’ll be back soon.”
My soldier.
My mercenary.
The man that keeps the bad men at bay.
The man that fights for me and everyone else so we don’t have to.
“I love you,” he said, his thoughts already in sync with mine.
“I love you too,” I said, already counting down the days till he returned.
I love you, my mercenary.
