Willing myself to leave, I pushed up and tiptoed out of his room, closing the door behind me. Without wasting any more time, I descended the staircase, slowing down as I spotted my rapist, the room not as dark as Jagger’s.
“You’re up early,” he said, his raspy voice making me recoil. “Are you hungry for some sausage?” He cupped his crotch.
I willed myself to take the last steps, knowing he would learn his lesson right before his death. “Sì,” I replied, stopping in front of him. He was so much bigger than me, and laden with muscle, I just prayed I could outwit him.
He raised his eyebrows. “You’re not going to fight me today?”
“That would be pointless; you hold all the cards, so let’s fuck before everyone wakes up.”
“Good thinking.” He indicated with his hand towards the passage.
Taking in a deep breath, I headed for it, willing myself to stay strong. I would prevail over the soldier—no matter what.
I stopped in front of the gym, reaching to open the door. He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from it, making me yelp.
“Be quiet, woman,” he hissed. “The Don’s puttana is sleeping in there. We’ll use another room.”
He dragged me to the next door, causing me to panic. This had to be done in gym, since I’d hidden a knife between the wall and bed. I pulled back, trying to free my arm. “I’ve changed my mind,” I said.
“Too bad.” He opened the door and shoved me inside the room.
I righted myself and rushed for the door, screaming, “Help!”
He grabbed me and clamped a hand over my mouth. “Be quiet,” he hissed.
I continued yelling into his palm.
He grabbed my neck with his other hand. “Shut the fuck up or I will break your fucking neck.”
I went still, the squeeze silencing me.
“Now, we’re going to play this nice,” he said. “If you don’t fight me, I’ll make this as painless as possible. Understand, puttana?”
I nodded.
He shoved me towards the desk. “Turn around.”
I shook my head. “Please, I’ve changed my mind. I want to go back to my room.”
“Not happening, so turn the fuck around, unless you want to die.”
I shook my head again, then quickly turned as he rushed me, the man absolutely terrifying.
He placed a hand on my back and pressed my breasts against the desk. “About time you did what you were told.” He reached under my nightie and grabbed my panties, ripping them off. A zipper sounded, then he kicked my legs apart. I started crying, knowing I couldn’t do anything to stop this, the prod of his dick coming a second later.
“Keep your tears to yourself, hole,” he said.
The word hole stilled me for a second, then anger raced through me, logic now going out the window. I wasn’t a hole for him to fuck, I was a fucking Donatelli!
I reached back and dug my nails into his hip, wanting to hurt him as he’d hurt me with that vile word. A smack landed across the back of my head, but I was too angry to care. I turned around and went for his eyes, wanting to gouge them out. Knocking my arms to the side, he punched me in the stomach with an uppercut, winding me. Before I could catch my breath, he spun me around and leaned me over the desk once more.
He clamped a hand over my mouth. “Do that again and I’ll knock you out,” he spat. “I don’t need you conscious.”
He prodded my pussy again, his fat cock trying to force its way inside. I screamed into his hand as he shoved it in without preparation, the pain intense, my body not having healed from the last rape. In disbelief this was happening again, I stared at Frano’s desk, tears blurring my vision. He grunted behind me, using my body for his own pleasure, causing me nothing but pain.
I blinked my tears away, something shiny capturing my attention. It was a letter opener, lying next to Frano’s keyboard like a gift from God ... or the Devil, because I didn’t know whether it was going to save me or damn me to Hell. Regardless, I inched my hand towards it as the soldier continued to fuck me, his grunts filling my ears, while his cock filled my body. Praying he wouldn’t notice, I wrapped my fingers around the letter opener and pulled it towards me. Another slam of his cock penetrated me hard, the groan that followed telling me he was climaxing. Knowing this was my one and only chance, I thrust the letter opener back as hard as I could, praying I got him. He shouted out in shock and pulled out of me. I spun around, seeing blood coloring the right-hand side of his shirt, the strike having hit his lower stomach. A second later, the shock on his face morphed into fury. Like a raging bear, he lunged at me, making me stab out in panic, the letter opener hitting him in the throat. His hands went to his neck, blood spurting everywhere. He stumbled backwards, then fell to the floor. He went to speak, but only a gurgle came out, death finally taking him.
I dropped the letter opener, staring at him in stunned disbelief. I didn’t know how long I stood like that, just watching his blood drip onto the carpet, but eventually the sound of seagulls snapped me out of it. I grabbed my ripped panties and went for the door, veering around the soldier, almost afraid he would come back to life and attack me like the Living Dead.
I headed out of the room, knowing I needed to pin the soldier’s death on Rita. I opened the gym door, praying she’d left. The room was empty, Rita obviously having lied to the soldier. I walked over to the wardrobe, finding the trapdoor wide open, the FBI agent not having covered her exit. It was almost as though she wanted it to be discovered.
I peered down the hole, considering escaping too. I shook the thought out of my head, knowing the Landi would catch me, my running skills pathetic. Although Jagger liked my body, it was useless when it came to anything other than fucking, my fitness non-existent. My father had always said my hips were made for producing babies, not for winning medals in sport. Plus, if I ran, the soldier’s death would be pinned on me.
I headed out of the gym, leaving the door wide open, hoping it didn’t matter which room the dead soldier was found in. I stopped, realizing I could make it look like Rita had stolen information for the FBI. I ran back to the office, willing myself to head past the dead soldier. I went straight for Frano’s desk and turned on the computer. A prompt came up, asking for a password. Ignoring it, I opened the desk drawers, messing their contents up so it looked like Rita had searched through them. I wanted Frano to think she’d betrayed him, so I could finally marry him, making my famiglia powerful once more. Though, Jagger was going to be the one in my bed, because I wasn’t giving him up—even for Frano.
Hoping that was enough, I headed out of the room and sped down the passage as fast as I could go, stopping at the end to check if there were any other soldiers roaming the dining room. Thankfully, no one was there, the place still shrouded in night.
Seeing my opportunity, I cut across the floor and raced up the staircase, stopping as Jagger’s door opened. Honey emerged from the room and flicked on the light switch. Her eyes shot to me, the blonde woman looking shocked, no doubt due to the blood on my hands and nightie.
“What have you done?” she gasped.
Panicked, I rushed her, shoving her inside Jagger’s room. She fell backwards with a cry, hitting her head on the floor. I jumped on top of her, knowing that once the soldier was discovered, she would realize I’d killed him. Fear and adrenalin coursed through me, the woman now a witness. It didn’t matter that she was innocent; all that mattered was I didn’t get caught. I grabbed her head and bashed it against the floor, no longer in my right mind, the pain from the rape still gripping me along with the fear of being found out. Without a doubt, the Landi would kill me for what I’d done, and this woman would be the one who told them.
I smashed her head against the floor again, the crack sounding loud. I knew I shouldn’t be doing this, especially not to Honey, but fear spurred me on, self-preservation taking over. I continued to do it until the dead look in her eyes finally made me stop.
I let go of her head. “Honey?”
r /> She remained still.
With a shaky hand, I placed a finger to her neck, confirming she was dead. I pushed away from her, staring down at the blonde woman, too stunned to do anything else.
Frano’s voice broke the silence. He was calling out Rita’s name. My gaze shot to the open door. I raced over to it, closing it as quietly as possibly. Frano called out again, his voice drawing closer. Needing to hide Honey, I grabbed her arms and dragged her into the bathroom, my heart pounding faster than a Ferrari at top speed. I shut her in, then quickly stripped off my bloodied nightie and kicked it under the bed. Now naked, I climbed in next to Jagger, hiding my hands under the covers.
A knocking sounded, then Frano called out for Jagger. My thoughts went to the blood on the carpet. If Frano saw it, I’d be hung, drawn, and quartered. Frano called out Jagger’s name again. Jumping out of bed, I grabbed some of Jagger’s clothes off his cabinet and ran to cover the blood on the floor. I dumped them on top of it, then raced back to the bed. The door cracked open as I reached for the sheet.
I yelled out, “I’m naked!”
The door stopped opening. “Is Jagger in there?” Frano asked.
“He’s fast asleep, he took a sedative.”
“Have you seen Rita?”
“No, you woke me up. What’s wrong?”
“Rita’s not in my room.”
A shout came from below, making me freeze. More voices followed, then the pounding of boots resounded throughout the house. Frano called out, asking what was happening, his voice growing distant, suggesting he was heading down the staircase. Knowing the soldier had been found, I ran back into the bathroom and started scrubbing his blood off me. Once clean, I went to Jagger’s side, giving him a shake. I knew I had no chance of successfully hiding Honey without him; I just needed to convince him to help me.
“Jagger, wake up.”
He moaned, but didn’t wake.
I shook him again. “Jagger.”
Again, he didn’t wake.
Needing to speed things up, I slapped him hard. His eyes shot open, his startled yell following a second later. I placed a hand over his mouth. “Sssh, don’t make a noise.”
He blinked at me, looking both hurt and confused.
“I need your help. I walked in on Honey sexually abusing you, so I killed her.” I continued talking, praying he believed me. “I also killed someone else, a soldier. He raped me in Frano’s office. I stabbed him with a letter opener, then ran into your room, which is when I saw Honey abusing you. After what happened to me, I didn’t think, I just went nuts.”
He pushed to a sitting position, looking stunned, as though he wasn’t fully comprehending what I was saying.
“I dragged Honey into the bathroom,” I said. “Please help me. The Landi will kill me if they find out what I’ve done.”
He pushed out of bed, the man naked. He turned to the bathroom, but stopped as Frano called out my name. He went to the door and opened it a fraction, sticking his head around the corner.
“What?” Jagger asked.
“Rita’s escaped. She killed a soldier to get out.” Frano went silent for a moment. He was probably trying to compose himself, no doubt devastated over his lover’s supposed betrayal. “I need you to look after the remaining women while I search for her with the Landi. I can’t let them hurt her.”
Jagger nodded. “I will look after the women.”
“Grazie mille.”
“No problem.” Jagger shut the door and headed for the bathroom. I followed him in. He bobbed down in front of Honey, feeling her pulse. Sighing, he shook his head. “I’m such a fool. I thought she wanted to help me, but like everyone she fucked me over.” He pushed up and turned to me. “She drugged me last night. I heard everything she said. She was going to set you up for Rita’s disappearance.” He placed a hand on my arm, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I’m in your debt, and will do everything to make sure no one finds out what you did.”
I stared back at him, the man making my heart bang against my chest. I was in his debt, but I couldn’t tell him that. Instead, I would use his gratitude to keep him.
He looked over his shoulder at Honey. “I don’t know how we’re going to dispose of her body.”
“Do it once Frano and the soldiers leave.”
He looked back at me. “Some will still remain here.”
“Then we’ll be careful.”
“Or, I could just tell them you were defending me against her.”
“No, they’ll link her death to the soldier’s one.”
“Then we can make it look like Rita killed her.”
“What would her motive be?”
“Honey saw her trying to escape.”
“That could work—if Rita isn’t found. Still, we need to get Honey out of here.”
“I’ll take her to her room.” He bent down and scooped her up.
I willed myself to not look at her, the blood tainting her blonde hair making me want to throw up. I followed him out of the bathroom and to the door. I opened it and poked my head out; making sure the passageway was empty. “All clear,” I said, opening it wider for him.
He walked out, not caring that he was naked. He carried the woman down the passage to her room. Once he was inside it, I closed the door and ran into the bathroom. I turned on the shower, desperate to wash the soldier’s cum off me. Tears fell along with the water. I didn’t feel guilty over the soldier’s death, but Honey’s... I let out a sob. I had liked her, even when we’d argued. And although she’d taken advantage of Jagger, I didn’t blame her for it. I would’ve done the same thing in her position, and now she was dead—all because of me.
Noise came from the bedroom, the closing of a door. I turned around in the shower, seeing Jagger enter the bathroom. He opened the shower door and stepped inside, his expression so sad. He leaned forward and kissed my forehead, letting his lips linger there for a moment before pulling back. Without a word, he took the soap off me and started washing himself, his eyes not leaving my face. Once he was finished, he put the soap in its holder, then rinsed his hands.
“No one has ever fought for me before,” he said.
“I doubt that,” I replied, my mind going to Alberto, Honey, and the Padre. They had all fought to get him.
He shook his head. “You fought for me, not against me.” He took a hold of my face, staring at me with adoring eyes. They were even more golden than usual, the brown in them hardly noticeable. “You are tremendous, Camila, a truly strong woman, much stronger than I could ever be.”
I let out a racking sob. His words meant so much to me, yet they also tore me apart after what I’d done. I didn’t deserve the praise he was giving me. I hadn’t done it for him; I’d done it to save my own neck.
He ran the back of his hand down my cheek. “You are so beautiful. Frano’s a fool to choose Rita over you.”
Another sob shuddered out of me.
He started kissing my tears away. “Don’t cry, bella, I only want to see you smile.”
“But I killed Honey.”
He placed his forehead against mine. “No, you defended me, and now I will defend you. I give you my word I will protect you anyway I know how. You are my woman now.”
I let out another shuddering sob, stunned that he was calling me his woman. All thoughts of marrying Frano flittered out of my head with those five simple words. I no longer wanted to marry the Don, I wanted to marry Jagger.
He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me to his body. I wrapped my arms around him too, not wanting to let go. Noise came from the front yard, the sound of cars leaving. I didn’t care what was happening out there. All I cared about was being with Jagger. He was worth killing for, and now I knew I was capable of doing it, no one was going to part us.
Ever.
