Heaven's Watcher Page 8

by Kayden Claremont

Darius scrambled over the rocks. A stranger, probably the cousin, dashed over to the shooter, and hauled him to his feet.

Heaven found the gun at the shooter’s feet. She wanted to punch him with it, but she had to find her brother. “Andy, come out. It’s me Heaven. You’re safe.”

When she saw Andy’s head pop up over a small boulder, she uttered a small thank you. She took a deep breath and waved.

He bounded across the rocks with the grace of a Labrador puppy. “Heaven.”

On wobbly legs, she ran toward him. Unable to find the words to tell him how she felt, she jumped into her big brother’s arms. “Don’t you ever disappear on me again.”

Her brother twirled her around as he had when they were kids. She’d never been happier.

When he finally set her on the ground, she slapped his shoulder. “Why didn’t you tell me you were alive?”

A sheepish grin formed on his lips. “Sis, it was too dangerous. I didn’t want to involve you.”

“Lucky for you, the DA didn’t agree with you.” She grabbed his hand. “Don’t you ever leave me out of the loop again. We’re family.”

Darius passed the shooter and his cousin to approach her and Andy. “Maybe we should take this family reunion inside. There might be another hit man trying to win the contract on Andy.”

Heaven linked her arm through her brother’s, and they followed Darius into the small house. She couldn’t let go of Andy’s arm. The fear of losing him again was too strong.

The cousin had stopped the shooter’s bleeding and had him handcuffed and sitting in a wooden chair.

Darius was on his phone by the window, so she and Andy sat on the sagging sofa as far away from everyone as the tiny room would allow.

“Wow, sis, I never knew you were such a good shot.”

Heaven cuffed Andy’s shoulder. “You knew I’m a licensed PI. What did you expect?”

He squeezed her hand. “Sorry. I got myself in too deep. This was the only way for me to get out. I’m going to start a new life.” He kissed her forehead. He’d done the same thing when she was upset when they were kids. “You are going to be so sick of me in your life from now on.”

She laughed. “No way is that ever going to happen.”

The sound of sirens in the distance meant the ordeal was over. Andy was resurrected from the dead.

Arm in arm they went outside to see the DA climb out of his car. He walked over to her brother. “Andy, you’ve given us enough information to put two very bad men away for a long, long time.” His expression didn’t change when he added, “Thank you.”

“Glad I lived long enough to get the info.”

Tears welled in Heaven’s eyes. She remembered how she suffered when she believed Andy was dead. Wrapping her arms around him, she said, “Let’s go home.”

The DA raised his palm. “Not so fast. He is still under protection, so he’ll be living in a safe house for the next while. Once the charges are laid, we can get his legal papers in order to prove he’s alive. All this has to be done before he’ll be able to go back into society.”

Unable to let go of her brother again, she grabbed his arm. “Fine, I’ll go home and get some clothes. I’ll stay with him at the safe house.”

The DA shook his head. “No can do. You have to continue with your life as if Andy is still dead. It’s the safest thing for both of you.”

  “But—”

The DA raised his palm to stop her. A detective accompanied Darius over to them.

Glazing at the detective, the DA said, “You made sure he understands the rules?”

Darius patted the detectives shoulder. “Yes, I fully understand.”

  The DA nodded. “Good.”

Andy extended his hand toward Darius. “Thanks man. I don’t think I would have survived if you hadn’t helped Heaven track me down.”

  “Glad you’re alive.”

Before she had the time to say anything, a policeman approached. “We have to go.”

Andy kissed her on the forehead and lightly punched her arm. “Don’t worry, kiddo, we’ll be together before you know it.” He laughed. “And you’ll be sorry I’m back.”

She smiled as he left with the police officer and the DA.

Now that Andy was safe, she gazed at the giant Nephilim beside her.

A slow smile formed on his lips. “Your chariot awaits, unless you want the police to drive you home.” His low, rumbling voice, made her insides melt like chocolate in the Vegas heat.

“Thanks.” Heaven wasn’t sure she should take the ride. If she was smart, she’d take a cab home. Being with a non-human was crazy. Stupid or not, she couldn’t fight the strong feelings she had for Darius. If he hadn’t wanted to be with her, he wouldn’t be offering her a ride.

When he gazed at her, her heart thumped in her chest. His smiled widened, and all her doubt crumbled. “Well, my bike is at your place.”

They climbed into the car. Darius grasped her hand and rubbed his thumb over her wrist. Her skin sizzled with his warmth. “I’m glad everything worked out.”

A shiver snaked up her spine. “Me, too.”

“When Andy can be in public again, I’ll offer him a job at the casino.”

Heaven snatched her hand away. “Are you crazy? He has a gambling problem. That would be the worst place for him to work.”

“Not really. He won’t be allowed to gamble in our casino. I can arrange it so that he wouldn’t be allowed to gamble in any casino in a hundred-mile radius. It’s the safest place for him. Besides, I’ll be watching.”

She stared outside the window as Darius started the car and pulled out into traffic. “That’s his decision.”

“Of course. I need good men, and Andy fits the bill. The casino would pay for any education he needed to move up the ranks.”

She looked at him. “Still his decision.”

Darius brushed a lock of his hair off his brow.

Her pulse quickened. When he gazed at her and smiled, waves of heat crashed through her.

His gaze fell to her tits. “I don’t have to work today, so maybe we could spend the rest of the day together.”

“You realize I’m human?” Heaven giggled. “Are you still interested?”

“I’ve never been more interested in a woman in my life.”

“Well, then, my great big watcher”—she licked her lips—“I’m going to teach you how to become a doer.”
