His fingers touched her intimately. “Trent,” she said through a gasp.

“Kate,” he said, blowing out a breath, “you’re in my blood.” He smoothed her skirt down, then caught her again up in his arms and kissed her. “Let’s get back to our hotel or we’ll never make it.”

As they neared the hotel, the rain stopped completely and stars popped out in the sky.

They shared a smile and charged up the stairs. Once they were in the suite, he kissed her while his hand slipped under her shirt and cupped her breast. All thoughts of taking time to tell him about herself, and to clarify the truth, left her mind with his touch. She sighed.

Rising on her toes, she pressed into him, needing his hard body against her, wanting to feel the strength of his arms encircling her. He bent and kissed her with such fierceness that it swept her away. They clung together, passion blazing as his tongue thrust into her mouth, while he undid the buttons of her wet blouse.

Her hands unbuttoned and freed his wet shirt from his slacks. He shrugged out of it, revealing his perfect chest, broad shoulders, and six-pack abs. The sight sent her pulses to pounding and she touched his skin as she’d longed to do for weeks.

He unhooked her lace bra and slipped the straps and wet shirt off her shoulders, then unfastened her skirt and slid it along with her underwear down to the floor.

Trent swung her up in his arms and carried her to the bed. He yanked back the comforter, and settled her on the cool sheets. Gazing into his heated eyes, she lay back on the pillows consumed with desire and beyond protesting or slowing things down to tell her story.

Trent returned his hands to touch her, sending shivers running through her. “You’re ready for me.” He undid his belt and pants, kicked out of them, and joined her on the bed.

She touched his bare shoulder and pulled him to her. “I want you,” she murmured. He moved over her, and she ran her hands through his dark hair.

With a groan, he caught her hips and moved his erection between her legs, with his naked body, and his hot flesh, against her. He slowly pushed inside her, filling her up. “Kate…so tight.”

She didn’t think she could stretch any more. Desire shot through her being. “Oh, my,” she murmured in gasps.

He kissed her throat, the curve of her jaw. “You are more than any man deserves.”

She was unprepared for the unbridled passion and fire that engulfed them. She met him thrust for thrust, over and over again, wave after wave building inside her until she exploded, crying out, “Trent!”

He shuddered and gripped her hips, while she clutched his broad shoulders. He surged into her, meeting his own need, his liquid heat pooling inside her.

How violent and incredible their lovemaking had been. They both lay back on the pillows in an exhausted heap. He was everything she’d ever wanted. He rocked her world.

After a few minutes, her eyes popped open. They hadn’t used birth control. And she’d not told him anything about herself, but she still thought they could get through this. He’d just have to believe her that she’d come to the company for a good cause, to find out what really happened to her brother. Trent had said as much recently, that Matt’s death might not have been an accident… He’d be receptive. She was sure of it.

Trent gathered her close and kissed the top of her head. “I’ve wanted you for a long time, Kate, from the first moment I held you in my arms in the lobby, your first day.”

  “Do you mean that?”

“Yeah,” he said with a chuckle. “You’ve driven me mad ever since.”

“Mad, I do believe,” she said, giving him an impish grin.

“Mad and crazy, lustful… I could go on.”

They rose from the bed. She stood bared before him. Heat rising on her cheeks, she crossed her arms to cover herself.

“No, don’t be embarrassed. You’re lovely,” he murmured. “I want to look at you, touch you…and more.”

She closed her eyes as he trailed kisses down her neck to her shoulder. His fingers grazed her stomach where she had a raised, two-inch long, scar. “How did you get this?”

“Childhood accident,” she muttered weakly, and somewhat the truth, although how it happened wouldn’t be anything like he could ever expect. “I hope you don’t find it too ugly.”

“No, Kate. Nothing about you is ugly.”

She switched the subject. “I want to look at you, too. I remember that day on the construction site, you were bare-chested and wearing those tight jeans.”

  “You liked what you saw?”

She giggled. “How could I not, Mr. Farrington?” She placed her hand on his smooth, warm abs, as she’d longed to do for weeks.

He pulled her into the shower. There they explored each other with their hands, tongues, and hearts.

“Your skin is like satin.” He lowered his head and nibbled on her shoulder.

She stroked him and he grew hard in her hands. “And you’re so big and strong,” she teased.

“Nice to hear it,” he said, with a chuckle. “Ah, Kate. What you do to me is incredible.”

He pulled her back to him, kneading her breasts, and lightly squeezing her sensitive nipples as the warm water streamed over them. She arched her back.

Damn, Kate.” He had her bend over and brace the wall, and standing behind her, he clasped her buttocks and then stroked her intimately until her womanhood throbbed and was aching to be filled. He slowly entered her wetness. With his hand, he fondled her breasts, while she moaned her pleasure. He withdrew and thrust forward, again and again. She took every inch over and over again, until she was writhing in ecstasy and tightening around his hardness. His fingers found her most sensitive spot. Her body quickened. She climaxed hard and clenched him tightly.

He shot his seed into her. “Oh, Kate,” he muttered near her ear.

Her legs were shaky and she would have collapsed if he hadn’t clutched her to him and held her up.

After drying off with plush hotel towels, they returned to bed and lay together in total exhaustion.

He grinned. “Sweetheart, that was the best sex I’ve ever had. Twice.”

  “You were wonderful, too.”

He nestled her in the crook of his strong arm. “That’s what I like to hear.” They dozed for a while.

Kate awakened a couple hours later to moonlight shining through the drapes. “Trent?”

“Yeah?” he asked in a husky voice. His eyes hooded, he reached out and stroked her cheek.

A glimmer of insecurity washed over her. She hadn’t told him the truth about herself, but she just couldn’t tell him now, in bed, and ruin their weekend.

  “Just hold me,” she muttered.

He gathered her in his arms and brought his lips to hers. More heat spiraled through her. She lifted her arms to wrap them around his neck. He groaned and deepened the kiss.

Suddenly, he broke away. “I’m not sure what you’re doing to me, but I like it.”

  “I do, too.”

“I didn’t protect you—both times. We can’t keep doing this. Next time I have to use a condom.”

“Trent, I’m not on birth control pills. I never expected anything like this to happen between us.”

He flicked her nose. “You seemed to detest me when we first met.”

“I was so wrong about you. You’re not the arrogant, careless playboy I assumed when I first met you. You’re amazing…in so many ways.” Her lips curved with delight.

“I never envisioned myself in this situation either, at least not until recently… I’m not playing games here, Kate.” He kissed her mouth again and trailed his warm lips and tongue along her neck. “By the way, what did you want to tell me earlier that was so important?”

She thought he cared enough for her that when she told him the truth he would know she’d been driven to her charade to get justice for Matt. “Oh, I can tell you later.”

Because he’d probably be a little upset with her, and she might have to soothe him, she didn’t wan
t to tell him tonight—not their first night together. She’d tell him at the office when his lips weren’t nuzzling her ear and neck, or when his fingers weren’t caressing her bare stomach. She’d just have to convince him that she had come to the company for a good cause, and that she was worthy of his love. Together, they’d find the perpetrator at Farrington Construction.

Trailing kisses over her cheek, he molded his palm over her breast while he flicked his thumb across her nipple. “I want you again,” he said in her ear.

She pushed back a lock of dark hair that had fallen on his forehead. “I’m glad. I never want this night to end.”

He kissed her nose. “I promise you this night isn’t over. Expect to sleep in tomorrow and get back to town very late on Monday.”

  “Thankfully, it’s Veterans Day weekend.”

Trent caressed her hot flesh. When he kissed her, she almost believed everything would work out between them. Not wanting to think about anything else, she sighed, deliriously happy. He trailed hot kisses on her breasts, her stomach and everywhere, and brought her to the edge of insanity with his mouth. This time when he moved over her again, he wore a condom. The fire in his hungry lips met hers in a deep kiss as, once again, he branded her as his own.

  CHAPTER SIXTEEN

On Tuesday morning, Kate awoke alone in her own bed and back in Fort Lauderdale. She and Trent had returned late Monday evening, after the best weekend of her life.

Smiling to herself, she leisurely stretched. Her muscles ached, not surprising after their vigorous lovemaking. Except for a few walks near the water, and watching the sunset on the ocean, they had spent most of their time in Key West—in bed—and with room service.

  She already missed him.

Earlier that morning, he had disentangled himself from her arms, brushed a kiss across her lips. Then he covered her with the comforter. “Kate, you’re too exhausted to get up. Stay in bed. I’ll cover for you at the office.”

Silently agreeing she was too tired to get out of bed, she snuggled back into its warmth and watched him head out her door. Impulsively, she rose up on her elbows, but caught herself before she murmured the words, ‘I love you, Trent.’

It was too early to tell him her feelings for him—feelings she hoped he shared.

Falling back into an exhausted sleep, she later awoke with a jolt. She glanced at the clock. Nine a.m. In spite of what Trent said, she had a job to do. In addition, the last thing she wanted was to draw attention to the fact that they were seeing each other.

If she hurried, she wouldn't be significantly late for work. Not wanting to change her normal routine at the office, but wanting to look nice for him, she dressed for work in a more form-fitting gray suit with a crisp white shirt. She arranged her hair in a softer bun, with a few tendrils at the sides. Then she popped in contacts and applied makeup—she didn’t have to hide anymore. She wanted Trent to like the way she looked and she planned to go shopping this week.

On the drive to work, her thoughts began to nag her again. She hadn’t told him anything about her deception to get into the company. What would be the best way to confess? “Trent, there are some things you need to know about me. For one, I’m not a real psychologist.” She clenched the steering wheel. “Yeah, right—he’ll like that one.”

Oh, God, how was she going to tell him the truth about herself? How would he take it?

“Trent,” she said, practicing again what she’d say, “I had to get into the company to nab the person responsible for my brother’s death…namely you.” Sounded better, but she should definitely leave off the last part. She didn’t want to hurt him by letting him know he had been her prime suspect.

Kate blew out an exasperated breath, not ever wanting to lie to him again. She’d just have to explain that she meant no harm to anyone who was innocent.

When the time came, she was sure the right words would come. Trent would believe her because she was sure he cared enough about her to forgive her.

  He would hear her out.

  * * *

At ten a.m., Kate stepped off the elevator. When she walked by Purchasing, she noticed Cecilia wasn’t at her desk. The file room door was slightly ajar and the hall empty so Kate took advantage of the opportunity and retrieved a few more suspicious purchasing invoices from the file drawers.

A few minutes later, she entered her own office. The sight of a single, red rose in a vase brought a smile to her lips. She inhaled the sweet fragrance, then sat at her desk to study the purchase orders.

With a quick tap on the open door, Darcy bounded into the room. She shoved her hands on her hips. “I wondered when you’d show up. So glad you’re okay after that accident, but okay is an understatement. Boy, do you have a healthy glow. Your hair is not so severe. And you ditched the glasses. Good for you.”

The news she was seeing Trent might hurt Darcy. Kate’s cheeks heated with guilt.

“And by the look on your face, Kate—and not to mention that incriminating rose—I’d say you had one heck of a great weekend. Someone here at work? Who’s it from?”

Kate winced. “Oh, you’ll be surprised.”

When Darcy frowned, Kate was reminded just how much Darcy had wanted Trent. “I need to tell you something. This is so hard for me. Trent and I…” Tears stung Kate’s eyes as she rose from her chair. “Darcy, I know you sort of liked him, but after the accident, we ended up together this weekend. It just happened. I didn’t plan it. Please don’t hate me.”

Darcy didn’t bat an eyelash, but rushed to fling her arms around Kate. “It’s all right. I want you to be happy. I suspected he was attracted to you anyway. Trent wasn’t right for me, but he is for you.”

“The last thing I’d want to do is hurt you. I didn’t expect this to happen.”

“It’s okay. Sure, he’s delicious, but I saw sparks flying between you two at the masquerade ball. Matter of fact, lightning nearly struck every time he was in this office. And even though he seemed angry at you at times, I saw the way he looked at you.”

  “You did?”

“Yeah. Actually, I want to tell you something, too. I went out with Greg this weekend to a football game. You were right about him. He’s sweet and fun. Maybe I’ll go for a nice, easy-going guy for a change.”

Kate hugged Darcy again. “You and Greg. That’s great.”

“Well, it’s only one date—we’ll see what happens. But you, you’ll have your hands full with Trent. He seems strong willed and compelling. Greg is like a cupcake in comparison.”

Kate smiled. “And you were so right about Trent. He’s fantastic and he makes me so happy. And I know he isn’t responsible for Matt's death.”

“I never thought Trent was a criminal.”

“You had more faith in him than I did.”

Darcy shrugged. “And you’ve experienced more rotten people than I have—if you don’t count my ex-boyfriends.”

Kate chuckled. “I want to help Trent, too. I think he has some deep issues.”

Darcy laughed. “You always wanted a project.”

“Yeah, and he’s it.” Then Kate sobered quickly as panic rushed through her. “I need to tell him everything. I’m afraid he's going to be upset with me when he hears it all.”

“He should believe you.” In spite of her words, Darcy looked a little worried.

“Is that wishful thinking?” Kate asked, frowning. “He also suspects someone is sabotaging the Karger site, just like I do.”

“You mean someone is intentionally harming the company?”

Kate nodded. “We’re not sure who. I have two suspects. Trent says Frank Blake wants Farrington Construction, and Roland seems jealous of Trent. All the problems on site could be to make Trent or the company look bad. Or someone is trying to get even for something… Anyone could be responsible. When Cecilia was on break this morning, I went into Purchasing to get to the bottom of this and I found these.”

After spreading the purchase orders out on the desk, Kate’s eyes fell on
an incriminating signature—Trent’s. “That’s puzzling,” she said, taking a closer look. “Trent authorized this change order?” She whirled to her computer and pulled up the equipment files. “This model—I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s intended for heavy commercial use. Why would he do that?”

  “Substandard equipment?” Darcy frowned. “Trent?”

“Maybe it’s just a mistake, or I’m not reading this right. I’m going to him with this to get his opinion. Perhaps it’s nothing.”

When Trent glanced up from his desk to find Kate standing in the doorway, a warm glow spread through him. Was this what love felt like? He’d never thought it possible.

He smiled at her. “Rested enough?”

She grinned back at him. “Pretty much, considering the weekend we had. Thanks for letting me sleep in,” she teased.

  He stood. “Any time.”

She waved the papers in her hand. “I have something important to show you.”

“Sure, but come here first.” She walked straight into his arms. “You smell so good,” he whispered against her hair. “I’d like to see you tonight.” That was an understatement. He wanted to see her all day, all afternoon, and all night…

  “I’d love that, too.”

“How about if I pick you up at six. For dinner and more?”

  “Yeah, I’d love it.”

He lowered his head and brushed his lips across hers. “I could stay over, or…” He kissed her ear and then her earlobe. “Or you could come to my place?”

Clasping her arms around his neck, she smiled up at him. “Either one works for me.”

He squeezed her waist, then he dropped his hands to her buttocks. “Ah, Kate,” he said, with a low growl, hauling her tightly against him. “What are we going to do about…about this?”

  “I don’t know,” she murmured.

“I do…later…tonight,” he said each word seductively. Gazing down at her, he was satisfied by her dreamy gray eyes that she had been just as affected.
