“About a month ago.” He put his arms around her. “Been saving up. I snatched one of your rings from your jewelry box to get it sized.”
She laughed. “Oh my God.” She held it up to the fading light and smiled. “I can’t believe I’m engaged.” She wished her mother and grandmother could see it.
From down the road came the sound of an approaching vehicle. Deacon lifted his arm and looked at his watch. “I told them to wait ten minutes. They can’t tell time.”
Lorena sniffed. “Who?”
Jack’s truck came around the bend. It slowed and stopped next to them. Jack leaned out the window, grinning. Zeke sat in the truck too, on the passenger side, Stacy in the middle.
“She say yes?” Jack hollered.
Lorena laughed. This was going to be her life, forever and ever.
She lifted her hand with the ring on it. “Of course I said yes, you fool. Now you can take bets on who gets to be the best man.”
The three in the truck clapped and whooped. Stacy bounced. Lorena buried her face against Deacon’s shoulder.
He kissed the top of her head. “You sure you wanna marry into this family? You gotta be related to them.”
She lifted her head and smiled up at him. “Yes, I do.”
