“So, he’s fine?” she asked calmly, but I could hear the hitch in her voice. I looked closer and saw that she had tears in her eyes. She was fucking crying. Shit. I could kill Pappy and Sebastian for doing this to her.
“I’m fine, Kate. A recruit got a little trigger happy, but he’s already been dismissed.”
“The bullet was a through and through. It was about the same place he was shot the first time you met him,” Pappy finally spoke up. “He’ll be fine. I already checked him out and there’s no internal bleeding. I just called you so that you didn’t kill me, and I thought you could take him home and make him take it easy.”
“You’re off for the next week,” Sebastian said.
“Whoa, I don’t need a whole week off.” That sounded like fucking torture. What the hell was I going to do that whole time?
“You’ll take off whatever time he tells you and you won’t argue,” Kate said as I saw tears slip down her face. I motioned for the guys to leave us and pulled Kate into my arms.
“I’m sorry they scared you, but I promise you I’ll be fine. Pappy got it cleaned up right away and I’m doing pretty good now.”
“Does it hurt?”
That was a fucking ridiculous question because I had been shot. Of course it hurt, but I wasn’t about to tell my already crying fiancé that. “Pappy gave me something for it. I’m fine.”
“Okay,” she nodded. “Let’s get you home. I can take care of you there and make sure that you don’t overdo it. I’ll call Dr. Carson and have him take over my patients for the next few days.”
“You’re too good to me, Kate. What would I ever do without you?”
That was the shit you said to your near hysterical fiancé to keep her from flipping the fuck out. I didn’t want Kate to stay home and give up days at her clinic for me, but I wouldn’t say jack shit after seeing her on the verge of tears.
“You’ll never have to find out.”

“Say ‘fuck it’ and stay here with me,” I whined as Kate got ready for work on Wednesday.
“I can’t. Dr. Carson can’t take over in the clinic for me. If I call in, I have to reschedule all those appointments.”
“Who gives a fuck? People get sick all the time.”
“I give a fuck. Some of these people need to have medication checks and if I cancel on them, I might not be able to get them back in for weeks.”
“Fine. Go take care of the poor, sick people while I lie here on my deathbed.”
“Why is it that all men turn into babies when they’re sick or injured?”
“I’m not being a baby. I just don’t want to be alone,” I pouted. “I’m bored out of my skull. There’s nothing to do but watch TV. I don’t have a single person to kill.” She raised an eyebrow at me, but I just shrugged. “I’m just joking.” She narrowed her eyes at me. “Sort of.”
“You know, I think I liked it more when you were this dark and dangerous man that stalked me.”
“I’m still that man. I’m just not used to sitting around on my ass. Believe it or not, before you came along, I was a badass that didn’t get shot quite so often.”
“So, you’re blaming me?”
“No, I’m just pointing out that loving a woman is dangerous. Practically downright lethal.”
“Well, it’s a good thing that I’m marrying Hudson Knight then. He’s pretty much indestructible.”
“Kate, I know I’ve said this before,” I said in all seriousness, “but I would do anything to make it back to you. I never really gave a damn about my life over the past few years, but then I met you and everything changed. You made me change the way I look at everything and there’s nothing I won’t do to be the man you deserve.”
“You’re already there. I don’t need a white knight, Hudson. All I need is you, my dark Knight.”
