The colonel looked at her leg and the scars on her face. “I think you’ll find the doctor useful under the circumstances.” His eyes softened. “And it’s the Army National Guard, not regular Army.”
“Whatever.” Caroline grimaced from pain.
Synthia ran and grabbed Nate’s leg. She looked frightened. Nate picked her up.
The colonel looked at her and then everyone in the bunker, one at a time.
“What the hell are you looking at?” Caroline asked.
The colonel’s eyes darted to Caroline. “People. Extraordinary people. The kind who will rebuild this country, this world.”
A helicopter hovered outside.
A young female soldier rushed in carrying a large pack by the shoulder strap.
“Ladies,” the colonel said, “your doctor has arrived.” He started out the door.
Caroline took one look at her, lay back on the table, and relaxed. “Good. I need a doctor with the balls to do the job.”
The colonel stopped, turned, and looked around the room again. His eyes lingered on Brian and Cindy. “Yes. We will rebuild.”
