It crashed down, taking most of Gabriel’s ledge with it as it destroyed the bridge and island and fell through the closing portal.
He looked at Micah. Her expression changed from fear and shock to relief as her gaze found his.
Gabe smiled back as the ledge released from the wall and he, along with it, tumbled into the blackness below.
   CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT
The rumble in the cistern below shook the ground outside the Hagia Sophia, and the effect was instantaneous. Demons began to abandon their fight, and those that hesitated were dispatched by the soldiers’ swords.
   They’ve done it, he thought.
“Highness,” one of the Templars shouted from the wreckage of the church. He stood at the edge of mangled metal, wood, and rubble, staring down.
Climbing to the edge, he looked below. Mastema was writhing in anger over the body of Lilith while Afarôt, holding Joseph over his shoulder, and Micah used the opportunity to escape to the tunnel. “Where is Gabriel?”
   “He fell.”
“Fell? What do you mean? Dead?”
“No. He fell. Through the open portal.”
“Bloody hell.” He began to take off his armor.
   “Highness?”
“I’m going after him.” His shoulder pads fell off, their ties released.
“I must object, Highness. Without you—”
“This is not a debate, Captain. And I’ve told you, enough with the Highness bollocks. I’m not the queen of England.” He removed his helmet and face shield, running his fingers through his blond hair. He picked up his sword and stepped to the edge. The blade ignited into a blue flame. “Your orders are to get to the other archangels and assist them. Get them to safety. Escape. Understood? You know what Mastema will now seek. We must stop him, but to do so, we will need the four.”
   The captain nodded.
“I’ll find Gabriel and bring him back. Hold off the demon until we return.”
   “Be careful, High—”
He gave the captain a stern look.
   “Be careful, Uriel.”
Yuri smiled at the captain and dove into the cistern, falling through the mouth of the Hellgate until he felt the cold embrace of the darkness.
