“I’m listening,” Sam responded before taking a sip of his wine.
Gathering her courage, Jo pressed on. Putting both elbows on the table and resting her chin on her hands, she leaned forward, knowing Sam could see her cleavage.
“You know that little credit card you left in the drawer?” she asked.
“Yes, the platinum Visa. What about it?”
“I used it,” she informed him, her eyes teasing him.
“Oh,” he drawled, watching her closely. “How much did you spend?”
“Three thousand dollars,” she said calmly.
That got his attention, and he looked at her with his mouth open. Not that he couldn’t afford it, but until this point Johanna had refused to let him spend any money on her, especially since he began paying for her mother’s care.
“Is that a three thousand dollar dress?” he asked, cutting off another piece of meat.
“Of course not,” she laughed. “But I bought a lot of other things, too, Sam, some of them for the house, but most of them for the bedroom. Well, not to be worn only in the bedroom, but still - that’s mainly where their worth is.”
“I see,” he said, putting the meat into his mouth.
“I feel terribly bad about it, Darling, and as a matter of fact, after dinner I think you should spank me.”
Sam choked on his meat, his eyebrows raised in stunned surprise as he looked at her. Johanna’s head was nodding up and down, her ponytail swinging madly. When he was still coughing after a few seconds, Johanna scooted around the table, prepared to perform the Heimlich if necessary.
“Sit down,” Sam ordered firmly as soon as he recovered, in a voice she hadn’t heard in a while.
Johanna sat.
“Explain yourself,” he demanded.
Johanna dropped the simpering housewife act and walked over to the sideboard, picking up the envelope, and placed it in front of him.
Sam tore it open and read the contents, a look of stunned surprise on his face.
“This is your resignation,” he said, holding up the paper.
“I know what it is,” she replied smiling, “I wrote it.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re right, Sam,” she said, getting down on her knees next to his chair, her pretty dress fanned out in a circle around her. “You’ve been right all along about everything; I was just too foolish to see it. I love you, everything about you, your strength, your kindness, your compassion, and most of all, I love that you care enough about me to put me over your knee when I do something crazy or thoughtless. I’m sorry I’ve made things hell for both of us, Sam. I trust you never to be too harsh and always have my best interests at heart,”
She was tearful as she lay her head on his knee. “Please forgive me, Sam, and please tell me you’ll marry me.”
“I forgive you, baby,” he said, threading his fingers through her hair, his heart pounding with joy. “As far as marriage, it all depends on your answer to one tiny question.”
“Yes?” she asked earnestly, looking into his eyes and praying she had the right answer.
“Is there a garter belt under that dress?” he asked, his face serious.
“There is,” she replied, confused.
Sam whooped, pulled her to her feet and swept her into his arms.
“Sam, what about dessert?” she asked as he headed toward the bedroom.
“We’ll have dessert in here,” he laughed, kicking the door shut behind them.
And they did. Later, much later, they had pie.

Welcome. I'm Stevie MacFarlane and in the world of romantic fiction, I guess you could say I'm a newbie. My first novel, CHANGING HER MIND, was published in May of 2012 and I have written three more since then. It seems that once I add new characters, they begin to demand their own story and don't rest until I have given in. What started as a love story between one man and one woman became a series about a large Irish Family, The O'Malley's.
Although I write fiction, my characters become very real to me. (Is this normal? I have no idea and I have no author friends to ask.) Their love for one another, their strengths, their flaws are all part of who they are. I write about strong women, I am one, but I also know there is nothing better than being held by a loving man when the world goes off kilter as it sometimes does. Having someone to hold you and tell you everything will be all right is a comfort, even if it might not be completely true. My theory is, "That's okay Honey, just lie to me. It's what I need right now." The men in my stories are all strong willed and determined to win the women they love, but above all they are human. I like my men with heart and humor and not afraid to admit it when they make a mistake.
