I begin to tremble.
“Dr. August? Are you alright? I really need you to keep it together now. We need to find a way to save this baby. We can’t stay here, and I wouldn’t feel right about leaving her behind.”
I nod. “No of course not, she comes with us. I will protect her, for Eve.”
A new courage finds me. This child had to survive; it was my way to right all the wrongs. I was going to save her where I couldn’t save the others.
I flip through the journal looking for ways to stop the freezing process, but there are no details. Frustrated, I throw the journal to the ground and stomp on it. Once I free my mind of some of the total and utter chaos going on inside of me. I decide that the control panel on the wall will be my safest bet. Tinkering with some buttons I must be able to stumble upon some way to open the pod and free the small child.
Before I can begin pressing buttons there is a slamming sound at the door. Each slam was followed by a dragging sound as if a limp arm was pounding against it in a very inhuman way. It seems that we were out of time. We would have to leave now or face more zombies sniffing us out and blocking our only escape.
Mina looks over at me, waiting for a call to action, but I freeze. I have no idea what my next step will be. I begin to press buttons at random, which results in nothing happening. When Mina realizes that I don’t have anything under control she decides to take matters into her own hands. I see her reach for her gun, holding up the butt of the gun high above her head ready to slam it upon the small glass casing.
“No!” I cry out. “You might hurt her! Her body will go into shock being exposed to this environment too quickly.”
“What other choice do we have, Doctor?”
She had a very valid point, but so was my fear.
Without another moment of hesitation, she slams the gun against the glass. A small crack appears, but more force is needed. Mina begins slamming the gun down upon the glass rapidly, praying that soon the glass around the pod shatters to a million pieces.
I wait, holding my breath, but the child doesn’t stir.
The banging at the door grows louder.
“We need to go…now!” Agent Murray yells, beads of sweat now coating her brow.
Since I wouldn’t dare leave the child behind, I search the room for a way to carry her safely out into a zombie infested hallway. Hung by the doorway, a satchel remains. I throw it around my shoulders, bundling the baby as best as I can, I gently place her inside the satchel. It looks as though she is resting peacefully. Her lips are still slightly blue from the freezing pod, but her chest rises and falls, she is alive. As I stare at her tiny little face, I realize she has many of Eve’s features. My life belongs to her now, whatever is left of me, I would sacrifice for her, she would live, she would survive this.

A Note of Gratitude from the Author
I am eternally grateful to CHBB for making this series possible. Their hard work and constant encouragement made Eve and I feel right at home. It’s an honour to work with them and be published alongside so many authors I admire and respect.
I want to thank my family for having the patience to listen to my constant rambling of ideas and spewing of random thoughts. Thank you for loving me through so many zombie discussions and debates that I’m sure you never want to hear about zombies again. Thank you for pushing me to pursue my dreams and supporting me all the way. I couldn’t do this without your love and laughter. You guys complete me (yep cheesy, but that’s part of who I am).
Finally, I would like to thank my readers. I appreciate you joining me on this journey. Every kind word, every review, every encouragement, will not be forgotten, it means everything to me! Thanks for picking up the first two books, and thanks for picking up this book and hopefully you’ll pick up the final book in the series and see where Eve’s journey will take you next! I promise you last book will bring many surprises and thrills. It’s perhaps my favourite book in the series, Eve truly transforms in every way!
Sending you all some zombie smooches and hope you continue to enjoy the Zombie Girl Saga.
