‘Pity about that,’ he thought. He made a face, then turned and walked after the others towards where the principal and several other teachers were waiting to meet them. The looks of astonishment on their faces as they were recognized was something Willy would remember for the rest of his life. He heard his name go round the crowd in a growing buzz and knew he had entered the folklore of the school for ever.

As he got closer to the waiting throng Willy’s eyes finally found Barbara. There she was, next to Karen, right in the front of the crowd. She must have seen it all. He forgot about the principal and began walking towards Barbara. Their eyes met.

  Then he stopped.

He shook his head, and turned on his heel. Then he walked over to Marjorie and gripped her in a strong embrace and kissed her full on the lips.
