The King Triton Page 8

“Fuck! I didn't remember. I may have lost a boat, but you owe me a dinner”.

At Nathaniel's silence, and taking it as him not remembering his promise, Eric said, “You don't remember your prototype woman. You told me that you would invite me to a dinner if…”

Mireilla interrupted him, “And what is your type?”

Nathaniel answered before Eric did and caused him to sleep for two weeks on the couch all alone.

  “My type is you, princess.”

Eric understood the furious look Nathaniel gave him.

Either you shut up, or I'll cut your balls off, was what the look said.

So he opted to keep quiet.

  He really appreciated his balls.

“Well,” he cleared his throat, “I'll leave you two to it.” He stood up, left a bill on the bar to pay for the pitchers of beer he consumed and said before leaving the bar to sleep it off at home, “Remember the seafood, Nat.”

  Nathaniel laughed.

“I would advise you to ask me for the money for the seafood.”

“Why is that?” Eric asked curiously.

“You may have to burn the couch, your living room carpet…” With every word that came out of Nathaniel's mouth, Eric grew greener and greener, “your bathtub and your...”

Eric looked at him in horror.

“Not my bed. Tell me you didn't do it in my bed too.”

  Nathaniel shrugged.

“Sorry, buddy, but you'll have to burn it too.”

“You pretentious son of a bitch. Me in the dry and you making me refurnish my house.”

Mireilla looked embarrassed as laughter followed Eric's insults. Even though they were different, they liked each other. And now that Nathaniel was more human, more open, the locals didn't miss the opportunity to joke with him or because of him.

Eric left the bar muttering curses against his friend.

He was followed shortly after by Nathaniel and Mireilla. She felt uncomfortable with so many stares on her person so she asked Nathaniel to take her outside.

Nathaniel was delighted. What he had in mind could not be carried out in the bar unless they wanted to spend a night in the police station for public scandal. Walking hand in hand through the streets of the small town, Nathaniel stopped her and looked at her intently.

  “Thank you, my princess.”

  “Why?”

Nathaniel caressed her cheek tenderly. “For teaching me to be happy.”

  EPILOGUE

  4 years later

“I don't understand why Carysse didn't bring her daughter with her.”

Mireilla Klaider looked at her husband. They were both at the port of the village where they had lived since their wedding day, and the birthplace of their little triton, Gabriel, a beautiful one-year-old boy who was laughing happily with his new toy, a gift from his Aunt Carysse, Nathaniel's sister.

“Because when she called to let you know she was coming to visit you with her husband and daughter, and you told her that the monkey with hair was not going to set foot on the island. That was the reason, Nat.”

  Nathaniel looked embarrassed.

“Carysse is my little sister. I swore to protect her.”

“You did. Now she is happy with her husband, Simon. They have a small, beautiful house. Accept it! Your sister is all woman. Married. Immensely happy. You should support her and not insult her husband every time she calls.”

Nathaniel turned and took her in his arms, taking care not to hurt the giggling Gabriel who waved his little arms happily as he was held by his proud mother. The tourists were leaving on the afternoon ferries. As they passed the tourists, they looked at them, but they didn’t care. They only had eyes for each other.

“What would my life be if I had never met you?”

  “You would have been King.”

  Nathaniel shook his head.

“No. I am King now. I have a kingdom to protect and a family to love. I have everything. Thank you, my princess; you managed to teach me to be human.”

Mireilla looked at him with love. Even though four years had passed, the butterflies she felt every time she looked at her husband had not disappeared. She loved him more than when she accepted him before the mayor of the island on their wedding day.

“I love you, my triton. And I hope you remember that when my family comes to visit next week.”

The magical moment was broken by those fateful words.

“What! Over my dead body. Those harpies you have for sisters will never set foot in my house.”

Mireilla burst out laughing. Her husband was suspicious of her sisters-in-law because the first time they spent a few days in his house, they harassed him relentlessly, causing thousands of uncomfortable situations. But Mireilla knew how to stop her sisters by shouting at them what she thought of them. Nathaniel's love gave her enough strength to confront them.

“Don't worry, my love. Your honor will be safe. They are coming with their fiancés.”

“You'll have to make up for me putting up with them, princess.”

Mireilla shivered with anticipation at the throaty tone of his voice.

“As soon as we get home, and Gabriel falls asleep, I'll show you how grateful I am.”

Nathaniel let out a growl of frustration. Without another word, he took her by the waist and began to lead her on her way home.

Seeing his pace, Mireilla asked him:

“Why are you in such a hurry?”

Nathaniel did not turn to look at her; his jaw was clenched, and his body was tense.

“You are a sorceress, woman. You are a sorceress.”

Mireilla burst out laughing out of pure happiness. Her husband had lost control. He desired her, and when he did so with such intensity that he couldn't wait to take her, he called her that.

His pretty sorceress, the Queen of his heart. The human who had taught the triton to be human.
