by Judith M. Heimann

United States Army Air Forces/Office of Flying Safety, Safety Education Division. Survival: Jungle-Desert-Arctic-Ocean Emergencies [1942?].

For a more general sense of what American flyers in Liberators did and felt in late 1944 and early 1945, I drew on—and recommend—the following books (especially those by Hynes and Fussell):

Ambrose, Stephen A. The Wild Blue. London: Simon & Schuster, 2001.

Bradley, James. Flyboys. New York: Little, Brown, 2003.

Fussell, Paul. Doing Battle: The Making of a Skeptic. Boston: Little, Brown, 1996.

Hynes, Samuel. The Soldiers' Tale: Bearing Witness to Modern War. New York: Penguin, 1997.

Terkel, Studs. The Good War: An Oral History of World War II. New York: Pantheon, 1984.

I came across several 1945 U.S. newspaper and magazine accounts that drew on journalists' interviews of some of the airmen, but they tended to have fictional elements that the journalists or their editors had added, perhaps seeking to add luster to the airmen's unvarnished accounts. Looked at today, most of these articles seem terribly dated because of the false additions, which call to mind old hand-colored photographs of people with improbably pink skin and golden hair.
