“Yes, Lieutenant,” he said briskly. As he spoke, I heard a telephone ringing in the background. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but that’s the senator’s office in Washington again. I’ve got to go. I hope I’ve helped you.”
“You have, Mr. Hickman. You’ve helped a lot. Thank you.”
Not replying, he abruptly broke the connection.
