Just as softly, she said, “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you. And I want to stay in Aloma. You need to stay. It’s where you belong.” She felt as if she were babbling, but he remained frozen and it made her nervous. Maybe he didn’t understand Or maybe he no longer wanted her.
“I want to be your wife. I want to live in Aloma. I want to be a teacher, Toby. I can’t believe it, but I really liked teaching. So I want to go back to school and get my teaching certificate—”
The rest was cut off as he reached across the seat and hugged her tight. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I haven’t heard one word past ‘yes.’ Do you mean it, Corinne? Are you sure?”
She laughed through her happy tears. “I’m sure. For the first time in my life, I’m sure.”
He held her close and kissed her. “I love you, sweetheart. God, I love you.”
She winced, and he pulled back. “I’m sorry, did I hurt you?” He tenderly fingered the bandage over her eye.
“No. the emergency brake is cutting into my hip. But I don’t care. Kiss me like that again.”
He complied, then pulled away quickly. He dug his keys out of his pocket and started the ignition.
“Toby,” Corinne asked with a laugh, her heart racing. She wiped tears away with the back of her hand. “What are you doing?”
“Driving to the courthouse to get married. Buckle your seat belt.”
“Right now?”
“Yes, now. I have to make up for lost time. I’m not giving you a chance to change your mind.”
“But—but Aunt Muriel is in the coffee shop, waiting for me.”
“We’ll call her from the courthouse—she can be one of the witnesses.”
He drove to the edge of the parking lot and stopped, then he turned to look at her intensely. “You’re sure? You really want this?”
She smiled, then nodded. “More than anything. You’re right, Sheriff. We have a lot of time to make up for.”
