“Kat?” I bend down, trying to capture her eyes. She glances up at me. “You okay?”
She chews the inside of her lip before forcing a nod. “I’ll look into it,” she says.
Satisfied, I nod. Waving goodbye to her, I leave the store, hoping my friend isn’t into something deep. I know witches can have an evil side, using dark and forbidden magic. God, if she’s messing with that . . .

The door chimes as Irene walks out, my mind working frantically. Shades don’t belong here. They haven’t been able to cross realms since Myla died a few hundred years ago. The few that are here—the photographed ones—are stuck. There’s a reason why they’re all dressed from that era. But new ones? Ones that are freshly dead? Something’s wrong. This shouldn’t be happening. They shouldn’t be able to leave the Death realm. Something’s shifted, gone wrong, wavering the boundaries of two realms.
I glance up as Irene enters her car, a distracted look on her face as she drives out of my small parking lot. Their Pack is still healing, that much is clear. Such a death toll can do that to anyone, and from what I hear, they didn’t exactly have it easy before the Rogue Battle.
That’s what the supernatural world is calling it: The Rogue Battle. It’ll go down in our histories as a legend.
A Rogue Pack has never existed before. They’re usually feared individually, and together, they should be a nightmare. For two Packs to join together and kill the miscreants . . . that’s unheard of. I’m just glad Irene came out of it alive.
I had an internal war with myself about trusting her with my secret. The only people who know about it is my Coven. My ex-Coven, I guess. It’s what happens when you dabble with the wrong person. I should have known that messing with a Fee’s order would have come at a price.
You should trust Irene. She means you no harm.
I grumble at the voice inside my head. The creature is too intelligent for her own good.
Sighing, submitting myself to my fate of a lonely life, I grab a rag and clean the fingerprint smudges from the counter Irene left behind.
