  “Maybe I’m being foolish again,” she said softly, “but I don’t care. I don’t want to be alone right now. I need somebody strong... I need you.”

  He took her into the bedroom, and undressed her, and when she came into his arms she murmured against his chest, “Be gentle this first time, Carmody. I still hurt and I’m not used to sex and I’ve never been with a man like you. Be gentle.”

  He was gentle.

  It was Gillian, after a while, who was not.
