“Earlier, with Gwen when she came in my room and saw me upset—” Elsie gasps, covering her mouth with her hand to stop words from coming out.
“You were upset? When?” I tilt my head, brows furrowing when I hear that she had been in pain when I wasn’t here to comfort her.
“It doesn’t matter.” She shakes her head, barely getting the words out as she tries a couple times to flip the grilled cheese to cook the other side.
Hesitantly, my hand comes up to cup her cheek, turning her to look at me. “Of course, it matters.”
“It’s not like you care,” she murmurs, forcing her head in the other direction, and I drop my hand. “You canceled our plans to be with a girl you don’t even know.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that, not when I know you need me.” I apologize, feeling even worse now. “Why were you upset, El? Please tell me.”
“It doesn’t matter now,” she says again, her pink lips quivering and her eyes welling up with tears.
My heart clenches in my chest. “Was it because of Cassie?” I go on a whim to ask, hoping that maybe she’ll say yes.
I’m shocked when she mutters under her breath, “That’s half of it.”
“You don’t need to ever worry about another girl. You’re the number one girl in my life.”
A small sob shakes from her chest, and I thought my words would have made her feel better. “I miss him so much, Hayden.”
Suddenly, I’ve forgotten all about her being drunk and slightly jealous of Cassie tonight. Elsie being happy is the number one priority in my life, and seeing her so sad breaks my heart.
“I know you do,” I whisper, pulling her in my arms, and she curls up into me, holding on tight. “Sh, don’t cry. I’m here, I’m here.”
I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that I’ll love this girl forever.
