All the Best Lines Page 33

by George Tiffin

You’re not suddenly going to go away again, are you?

  CARRIE

No. I might drown. But otherwise, no.

  CHARLES

  OK, OK. We’ll go in.

They head inside but Charles turns to her again:

  CHARLES

But first, let me ask you one thing. Do you think — after we’ve dried off, after we’ve spent lots more time together — you might agree not to marry me? And do you think not being married to me might maybe be something you could consider doing for the rest of your life?

  He waits for her answer.

  CHARLES

  Do you?

  CARRIE

  I do...

Dir: Mike Newell • Scr: Richard Curtis • Cast: Hugh Grant (Charles), Andie MacDowell (Carrie)

  1995 SE7EN

An ageing detective is left shocked by the brutality of the serial killer he has apprehended.

  SOMERSET

Ernest Hemingway once wrote: ‘The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.’ I agree with the second part.

Dir: David Fincher • Scr: Andrew Kevin Walker • Cast: Morgan Freeman (Detective Lieutenant William Somerset)

  1999 AMERICAN BEAUTY

A man fighting for joy and dignity narrates the story of his life — after he has died.

  LESTER

I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn’t a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time. . . For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars. . . And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined our street. . . Or my grandmother’s hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper. . . And the first time I saw my cousin Tony’s brand new Firebird. . . And Janie. . . And Janie. . . And. . . Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me. . . but it’s hard to stay mad, when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once, and it’s too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that’s about to burst. . . And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can’t feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life. . . You have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m sure. But don’t worry. . . you will someday.

Dir: Sam Mendes • Scr: Alan Ball • Cast: Kevin Spacey (Lester Burnham)

Writer Alan Ball claimed the film – originally intended as a play – was inspired by his memory of watching a paper bag swirling in the wind at the World Trade Center plaza.

  1999 EYES WIDE SHUT

Victor reassures a friend that the death of girl they knew was just an unfortunate accident.

  VICTOR

Life goes on. It always does: until it doesn’t.

Dir: Stanley Kubrick • Scr: Stanley Kubrick, Frederic Raphael • Based on a novella by Arthur Schnitzler • Cast: Sydney Pollack (Victor Ziegler)

Director Kubrick hated travelling so the New York exteriors had to be built in London. The film holds the record for the longest ever continuous shooting schedule; on one occasion, Kubrick repeated a shot of Tom Cruise walking through a door ninety times until he felt it was right. Kubrick died four days after completing his edit, for which he had the contractual right of final cut, so Warner Brothers were bound to release the film exactly as it stood.

Among the various props in the movie can be seen a VHS copy of Rain Man, a hit for Tom Cruise in 1988, and DVDs of several Kubrick films including his previous production Full Metal Jacket (1987).

  1999 FIGHT CLUB

The leader of an anarchic self-help group warns his audience to seize the day.

  NARRATOR

This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.

Dir: David Fincher • Scr: Jim Uhls • Based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk • Cast: Edward Norton (Narrator)

  2000 DANCER IN THE DARK

Selma finds the fantasy world of cinema a comfort amid life’s challenges.

  SELMA

You like the movies, don’t you?

  BILL

I love the movies. I just love the musicals.

  SELMA

But isn’t it annoying when they do the last song in the films?

  BILL

  Why?

  SELMA

Because you just know when it goes really big. . . and the camera goes like out of the roof. . . and you just know it’s going to end. I hate that. I would leave just after the next to last song. . . and the film would just go on forever.

Dir: Lars von Trier • Scr: Lars von Trier • Cast: Björk (Selma Ježková), David Morse (Bill Houston)
