  About this Book

An informal history of the movies told through some of cinema’s best-loved scenes, from the early days of Hollywood to the present day.

All the Best Lines is an informal history of celluloid narrated through cinema’s best-loved scenes and most memorable lines. Stirring speeches, slices of sparkling dialogue, hard-boiled quips, whispers of endearment, zingers, catchphrases… George Tiffin has combed the archives to unearth five hundred jewels of the screenwriter’s art, from golden-age legends like Ben Hecht and Billy Wilder to such modern masters as Woody Allen and the Coen brothers.

The films represented are grouped by themes that reflect the eternal magic of the silver screen: including Love, Libido, Monsters, Memories, Heroes and Zeroes. Within each theme the quotes are listed chronologically, creating a lively juxtaposition of films, stars and screenwriters from every era.

Sprinkled throughout the book are fifty special features which highlight intriguing aspects of movie history: from the career of Marilyn Monroe to the making of Apocalypse Now; from the art of the screenwriter to the role of the ‘script doctor’; and from film noir to New Wave.
