by Borsellino, Mary

There was hardly enough left in either of them for a proper climax, not after everything they’d done together in the last few hours, but even so they couldn’t stop touching one another, couldn’t stop wringing sensations so sharpened that they were almost like pain out of one another.

Everything grew hazy after a while, a half-dazed delirium of feeling good and connected and together. It was like falling asleep, like dreaming, even though they were still awake.

The raindrops and water-streaks on the window were like stained glass or gemstones, lit up in Technicolor hues by neon street-signs and high-rise offices still illuminated at the late hour. What little sky was visible was overcast and starless. It was even more difficult than ever to remember all the silly, mundane problems that had worried Suzy so much before.

Everything was going to be all right. Lily and Steven were going to keep on being the weird, funny, awkward almost-teens that they were, and Suzy was going to go on adoring them with all her heart, and nothing was going to get easier about the business of raising them into happy, healthy adulthood. But that was OK. She wasn’t scared. She had Drew, and she had Daniel.

Things would turn out fine, just like they always did sooner or later.

Daniel slipped his arm around her waist, hugging her close against him. Anchoring her.

Suzy thought maybe she could get used to being the little spoon. Not all the time, of course. Sometimes she needed her own space, and sometimes Daniel would be the one who needed to be comforted and protected. But maybe it was all right for her to be the little spoon, just every once in a while.

‘It seems so indulgent,’ Daniel mused sleepily, curling up closer behind her and kissing her shoulder. ‘Lying here, knowing we have the rest of the night to ourselves, with no interruptions or distractions.’

‘We’ve got so much more than that,’ Suzy corrected him softly. ‘We’ve got all the time in the world.’
