One Hundred and Four Horses
Page 28
Together, we walk along the beach and up to the stables. There is yet time for a moonlit ride. We saddle up our old friends Lady and Brutus and take to the clifftop road. From here, we can see for miles.
I will have to tell Pat about his home, but we look out over this beautiful, chaotic corner of the world that has harbored us, and my lips remain sealed.
There will be another night.
Acknowledgments
A big thank-you to Kate Kellaway, who wrote an inspirational article that caught the eye of our charismatic literary agent, Patrick Walsh, who in turn recklessly boarded a plane after reading Kate’s article and journeyed all the way to Vilanculos, Mozambique, to persuade Pat and me to write this book. Patrick, thank you so much for everything. A very special thanks to the wonderful Rob Dinsdale, who worked tirelessly to help me put the story together. Rob’s enthusiasm, hard work, and friendship are the reasons this book has taken form. Thank you to HarperCollins for publishing our book and a special mention to editors David Highfill, Kate Cassaday, Myles Archibald, and Jessica Williams for their dedication, encouragement, and kindness.
What happened in our country of Zimbabwe is heartbreaking—not only the displacement of her people and the fact that everything we loved and cherished was taken away from us, but the saddest thing of all, the consequences for the animals. There are so many people who have helped us and I would love to mention you all, but there is simply not enough space, so thank you to everyone for helping us make this impossible dream possible.
We would like to thank our incredible family—Paul and Sue, Rob and Lyn, Tristin and Tammy, Aunt Celia, Ant and Jules, Paul and Louise, Brendon, Jenny, Chelsea and Gareth, Anita, Tania and Andrew, Tim, Dave, Julie and Robert Cambray, and Granny Beryl—who questioned our sanity but were always there to support us. We would like to thank our old farming community in the Chinhoyi area, who did so much to help us. Charl and Tertia Geldenhuys, Pat and Carol Johnson, Les De Jager, Nick Swanepoel, Henry and Celia Rautenbach, Janey and Fred Wallis, CFU Chinhoyi, Rory and Lindy Hensman, Gary and Joe Hensman, Rob Gordon, Barnaby and Bev Pyper, and a very special mention for Gaydia Tiffin and her daughter Romaen, who did so much for us and the horses.
A big thank-you to the following people and organizations, who have all contributed in some way to the story of the horses: Robyn Dunne, who has gone beyond the call of duty; Rachel Ashman; Heather Armstrong; Sarah Cox, my equine godmother; Chris Tufnell, a most wonderful vet who flew out from Newbury, England, to help me with the horses; Wendy Hofstee; Neville and Edie Pearce; Ben Young; Donna Walker; Danni Holdsworth; Gemma Campling; Ian Hodgson; Christine, Andy, and Kate Johnson; Aimee Smith; Lisa Molera; Tanya Lumsden; Ahmed; Rosalyn Sclare; Wrenne Hiscott; Meryl Harrison; Mutare SPCA; Charlie Rodwell; Lyn James; Gerry Penford; Sue Elton; Hillcrest School; Vicky Bowen; Bridget and Keith Holland; the Dondeyne family; Murray Dawson; Ivor Keppler; Heather Trezona; Allan Hislop; Meryl Knox; Andrew Frodsham; Johan; Uli Meiners; Alex Lewis; Soraya and Peter; Beach Lodge; Richard Winkfield; Bill and Jane Clegg; Ann and Ralph Cheesman; George and Angie Lock; Sally Dilton-Hill and family; Chris and Sharon Maas; Des and Sally Bekker; Christo and Jan Kok; Steven Krynauw; Cathy Buckle; Julia Townsend; Olwen Law; Chris Aston; Jenny Gibson; Michael Moye; John Logan; Njerenje School; Armil; Mafua; the Malgahaes family; Kim, Billy, and Trevor Landry; Sally Bryson; Sicanda; Albert; Nomagugu Khupe; Jonathan Mazulu; Never; Mai Never; Bejai; Luka; Jeff and Jane Reilly; Brenda; Sandy and Snowy; Archipelago Lodge; Tracy and Grant; Nick Falk; Norman and Freda Higgs; Adele and Zoe; Ursula; Courtney; Michaela; Adi and Samara; and Casa Rex.
